Program translators. In one click: five free programs for fast translation of texts

For those who professionally translate from foreign languages, there is Abbyy Lingvo. Those who constantly encounter foreign texts that need to be quickly processed and generally understood use Promt machine translation systems. And if you need to contact the translator only from time to time to get an interpretation of an unfamiliar word in the text or roughly understand what is being said on the Chinese site, then contextual translators are indispensable. These small programs are convenient because they are always at hand and ready to provide a translation on demand.

Context translators did not appear yesterday or the day before yesterday. But with the penetration of the Internet to the masses, they have completely changed. Previously, these were applications consisting of a program module and dictionaries. Some dictionaries were supplied with the program, additional ones often had to be downloaded separately. An overview of such applications - "Polyglot prompters or something about contextual translators" - can be found in the archive of our site for 2007. But if you try to follow the links indicated in the article, you can see that almost all programs have ceased to exist or have been abandoned in these five years.

When broadband Internet appeared in every home, it became much more convenient to use online translation services, and with them new contextual translators appeared. They no longer store dictionaries on the hard drive, and you don't need to download anything other than a shell to run them. As soon as the user makes a request, the application searches for a translation on one of the popular web services and displays the result in its window. Of course, this approach requires a permanent connection to the Internet, but who doesn't have it now?

⇡ Client for Google Translate 6.0

  • Developer: TranslateClient
  • Operating system: Windows
  • Distribution: free (there is a paid version)
  • Russian interface: yes

For several years, this program has been for many the best solution for quickly translating words and texts. Instead of opening translate.google.com in your browser, you could use this extremely simple utility. It could be insert text for translation directly into its window or, alternatively, copy the characters and click on the Client for Google Translate icon in the tray. In the latter case, the translation was displayed in the cursor area, so there was no need to even switch between windows.

In mid-2011, Google changed the terms of the API for its Google Translate service - developers who use the service engine in their products were asked to purchase a license worth $20 per million characters. After this innovation, the Microsoft Bing engine was added to the free version of the program, and translation using Google Translate began to be offered in the Pro version (along with the ability to connect dictionaries and some other features). However, in November last year, this shop closed. Changes to the Bing API usage policy provide for free use of the service only within 4 million characters per month. In order to expand the limit, you need to pay $10 per million characters.

Since the restriction from Microsoft was introduced, the development of the program has slowed down. Client for Google Translate now works only for the first days of the month, until users of the program reach the limit from Microsoft (a quota of 4 million characters is provided for everyone). After that, instead of the translation, you can see the bleak message Microsoft Translator is over the quota. Try again later or switch to Google Translate. It is clear that you can buy the Pro version, but against the backdrop of free alternative applications, the once very popular Client for Google Translate seems like a dead project.

⇡ QTranslate 4.1

  • Developer: QuestSoft
  • Operating system: Windows
  • Distribution: Free
  • Russian interface: yes

It is completely incomprehensible how the developers of QTranslate succeeded, but this free program works with translation through Google, Bing, and several other popular services: Yandex, Promt, Babylon, SDL. If desired, any of the services and supported translation languages can be disabled.

The interface of the program is minimalistic, but at the same time there is everything you need for quick translation: neat tabs with the names of services are placed at the bottom, there are two fields for text, as well as a panel using which you can select the direction of translation, quickly swap languages, clear fields. Clicking on the headphones in the text input fields turns on the text being spoken.

In order to quickly translate a word or a couple of sentences, you can not even be distracted by switching to the program window. Just copy the text to the clipboard and a QTranslate icon will appear next to the cursor. Clicking on it will bring up a pop-up window with the finished translation. Despite its tiny size, it also contains several useful commands. So, with one click, you can try to translate a fragment using any other supported translation system, replace the original text with the resulting translation, listen to how it should be pronounced, copy it to the clipboard.

QTranslate can also be used to look up unfamiliar terms in dictionaries. If you choose not a quick translation in the pop-up window, but the opening of a dictionary window, you can find out what you know about the searched word Wikipedia, Definr, ImTranslator, Google search and other services.

To access web resources, you can configure the use of a proxy server, as well as set a timeout.

By the way, if a quick translation is not needed, the program icon can be easily disabled in the settings. Conversely, it is possible to quickly display the translation immediately when text is selected. In general, as you like. In addition, the program can display translation tools in the cursor area when pressing predefined keyboard shortcuts (by default, this is Ctrl + Q). Exceptions are set in the settings - applications in which QTranslate will not work. You can also enable the translation of interface elements: just move the cursor to the desired inscription, press CTRL + Q - and the translation will appear in a pop-up window.

The program remembers the history of translations and makes it possible to save it as an HTML file. In addition to the main functions, QTranslate also offers a virtual keyboard with support for about thirty languages.

⇡ Dicter 3.32

  • Developer: Dicter
  • Operating system: Windows
  • Distribution: Free
  • Russian interface: yes

Dicter is one of the easiest text translation programs out there. There are practically no settings in it, you can only change hot keys to open the translator window, font size and autorun settings along with Windows. Contextual translation is performed by a keyboard shortcut (by default, pressing the left CTRL and ALT keys simultaneously), you can also select the text and click on the Dicter icon in the system tray. By default, the program window appears in a simplified mode, when only the translation is shown, it is possible to change its direction, listen to the finished text, edit it and copy it to the clipboard. If you switch to the extended window mode, the original box will also appear.

To receive a translation, Dicter uses the Google Translate service, but there are no restrictions on translation in the program. Perhaps the developers cover their expenses for buying the right to use the API due to the fact that the installer with default settings installs the advertising module of services from Yandex (be careful when installing and do not forget to uncheck all the boxes!).

⇡Google Translate Desktop 2.1

  • Developer: AthTek Software
  • Operating system: Windows
  • Distribution: free (ads included)
  • Russian interface: no

As the name suggests, Google Translate Desktop also uses the Google Translate engine to work. The program is free, but supported by advertising - be prepared for the constant flickering of the flash banner at the top of the window. However, if Adobe's Flash Player is not installed on your system yet, instead of a banner, you will see just an empty window. The program does not require installation and is ready to work immediately after running the ggtranslate.exe file.

Google Translate Desktop does not support translation using hotkeys, but it monitors the contents of the clipboard. That is, as soon as you press CTRL + C or copy the text to the clipboard in another way, it immediately appears in the translator window.

The original language is determined automatically, but you can also hardcode it in the settings. The translation language is also specified in the settings, and here the program lacks flexibility. If, for example, the user wants to make a translation not in the usual direction (for example, Russian → English), but in the opposite direction (English → Russian), it will not be possible to receive it automatically, since the program will try to translate from English into English and will get stuck at this point. The button for quickly changing the translation direction will not always help either - if the original language is determined automatically, the button is inactive. You have to manually select the language from a long list.

The program window also has buttons for reading text (translated only), copying results to the clipboard, and clearing the window of text. The results can be saved as a text file. You should also pay attention to the input line at the top of the page. By specifying the site address here, you can quickly get the translation of the web page (it opens in the browser).

⇡ Lingoes 2.8.1

  • Developer: Lingoes Project
  • Operating system: Windows
  • Distribution: Free
  • Russian interface: yes

Breaking through the ad blocks on the Lingoes website, which instead of a translator slip installers of completely different programs, is not easy. But when you do succeed, you will be rewarded. Lingoes is one of the most functional free systems for quick translation, and there are no ads in the program itself, unlike the website.

The program supports thirteen (!) translation services, including the ubiquitous Google Translate, Yahoo, SYSTRAN, Microsoft Translator and others. Translation can be performed both in the program window (to do this, just go to the "Text Translation" section), and in a pop-up window.

Depending on your preferences, you can choose to have a pop-up window appear when text is copied to the clipboard, when it is selected, or when you hover over a word. At the same time, the reaction of the program is easily configurable: when translation of the selected text is enabled, you can configure exceptions, and when translation is active on hover over a word, you can specify what additional actions need to be performed in order for the program to translate it (for example, right-clicking and pressing the Ctrl key). By default, this function ignores numbers, but you can also ask the utility to ignore Latin, Cyrillic, or other characters.

Hot keys are also fully supported - with their help, you can not only call the translation window, but also, for example, voice the text. In the program settings, you can select the translation service that will be used by default, set the first and second target languages (the second will be used if the original language matches the target language).

Lingoes has built-in not only translation using online services, but also an incredible number of very different possibilities. Because of them, the program interface looks overloaded, but if you need a calculator, a currency converter, a periodic table, a unit converter, international telephone codes, a list of irregular English verbs or information about the current time in different countries, know that Lingoes has it all .

⇡ Conclusion

For a translator, especially for one that is positioned as a solution for quick translation, speed of work, an uncluttered interface, and ease of call are most important. For all three parameters, it seems to us, QTranslate has no equal. Despite the fact that, for example, in Lingoes there are many more settings that describe the appearance of a window with a translation, such a convenient option as in QTranslate is not among them. An unobtrusive icon that appears when text is selected and automatically disappears if the user does not access it, this is much more convenient than the constant appearance of a translation pop-up window on the screen. However, it all depends on how intensively you use the translator. Both Lingoes and Dicter also seemed to us very worthy programs.

Online / Offline translator for Android from Google, which can translate text from English into Russian and vice versa, as well as into more than 100 languages. For most languages, this translator can work even without the Internet! Plus, it's free too!

About numbers. Currently, offline translation works for 59 languages, and instant translation from inscriptions using the camera - for 38 languages. Automatic translation with voice input is supported in 32 languages, handwriting works for 93 languages. After a recent update, the service began using self-learning neural networks, so the translation has become much better. With the help of machine translation technology, sentences are now translated as a whole, and not in separate parts. Thanks to this, the translated text becomes more similar to our natural speech.

Translation can be done in different ways:

  • type text on the keyboard
  • use google voice translator (talk mode)
  • with the help of a photo translator
  • write text with your finger in the corresponding field

Also, if you have received an SMS message in a foreign language, you can easily find out its translation.

Online \ offline translator for android

For text translation, you first need to select a language pair (for example, Russian-English). When you enter text, instant online Google translation takes place immediately. If the translation does not appear instantly, you need to click on the arrow. To listen to the translation, click on the speaker (not available for all languages). You can view alternative translations of words and phrases.

Text Google translator without the Internet, that is, offline, will work if you first download the language packs. To do this, go to your Android device in Settings -> Languages and download the language you need. More than 50 offline language packs available.

Voice online translator from English to Russian

When you click on the microphone icon, the Google voice translator is turned on online. When you see the word "Speak", say the text you want to translate. After that, a voice translation will be made from Russian into English (in some languages you will also hear voice acting). To more accurately recognize speech, you can specify a dialect for some languages in the settings. It is worth considering that obscene words are not translated by default :)

In order for the language to be automatically recognized during the conversation, at the bottom of the screen you need to click on the microphone icon in the center. By doing this, you can speak any of the two selected languages. When the interlocutor finishes the speech, you will hear the translation.

The translator with a voice translator works great, because in this way you can break the language barrier almost anywhere in our planet and communicate with foreigners in 32 languages! This is much better than explaining on your fingers what you want from the interlocutor or in a panic looking for a translation of the desired word or sentence.

Unfortunately, the translator with voice input does not work in all languages (for an unsupported language, the microphone button will be inactive). The offline voice translator may not work correctly in some languages.

Google translator by photo

An English-Russian translator works by photo both online and without the Internet. Other languages are also available. With it, you can quickly find out the translation of a sign, inscription, menu in a restaurant or a document in an unfamiliar language. The translator works through the camera. Just click on the camera icon, point the camera at the text, select the desired area and get instant translation. To improve the quality of the translation, you need to take a picture of the text, that is, take a picture and translate it. The photo translator greatly expands the application's capabilities and allows you to make translation faster.

In order for Google instant photo translator to work without the Internet, you need to download instant translation languages on your android device. For example, after downloading the English and Russian package, the translator translates from English into Russian without the Internet.

handwriting

Handwriting text input is launched when you click the corresponding icon. In the "Write here" field, write words, draw symbols and get a translation. It is worth noting that this function is not supported for some languages (there will be an inactive icon).

And here is the entire list of supported languages: Russian, English, Ukrainian, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Polish, Finnish, French, Portuguese, Romanian, Norwegian, Czech, Swedish, Azerbaijani, Albanian, Arabic, Armenian, Afrikaans, Basque, Belarusian , Bengali, Burmese, Bulgarian, Bosnian, Welsh, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Galician, Greek, Georgian, Gujarati, Danish, Zulu, Hebrew, Igbo, Yiddish, Indonesian, Irish, Icelandic, Yoruba, Kazakh, Kannada, Catalan, Chinese (Traditional) ), Chinese (Simplified), Korean, Creole (Haiti), Khmer, Lao, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malagasy, Malay, Malayalam, Maltese, Maori, Marathi, Mongolian, Nepali, Punjabi, Persian, Cebuan, Serbian, Sesotho, Sinhalese, Slovak, Slovenian, Somali, Swahili, Sudanese, Tagalog, Tajik, Thai, Tamil, Telugu, Turkish, Uzbek, Urdu, Hausa, Hindi, Hmong, Croatian, Chewa, Esperanto, Estonian, Javanese, Japanese.

You can download a translator for Android in a matter of seconds and translate, for example, from English into Russian, Google can do anything and anywhere: on vacation, on the road, at a business meeting. This program is especially useful for tourists. You can use Google Translate online, where the Internet is available, and offline thanks to pre-loaded language packs. So you will always have a dictionary at hand. The main thing is that the battery of the device does not sit down.

The application development process is a very expensive and time-consuming process, and the development of one program can take a lot of effort, money and time. That is why very often programmers forget to localize programs into Russian. But thanks to the programs that are presented in this list, it is now easy to Russify programs.

Programs for translating programs may not be tools specially created for this, but the most common "resource thieves" if they know how to change resources, and not just get access to them. In this list, most of the programs were not developed for localization, however, with the help of them it is possible to do this.

The simplest version of the Russifier. Of course, it was designed as an easy way to access program resources, but the skilled hands of users have found better uses for it. There are no pluses in it, as such, but there are minuses. For example, it has not been updated for more than 10 years, and its functionality has not been pleasing for a long time, since eXeScope cannot get full access to all resources.

P.E. Explorer

This program is one of the most powerful ways to access program resources. It has a very wide functionality, and it gets a "pass" to almost all parts of the program, which allows you to translate, even untranslatable. An intuitive interface and the ability to recognize a virus even before launching programs make it even more attractive.

resource hacker

Resource Hacker is slightly reminiscent of PE Explorer, at least in terms of functionality. Thanks to this program, you can also access many resources, thereby translating more phrases and words. In addition, you can write your own scripts in it, which can then be put directly into the program as a separate resource (perhaps this is how viruses get into programs).

LikeRusXP

LikeRusXP was developed specifically for the translation of programs, unlike the three previous programs. It does not have a large set of functions, as in Multilizer, but there are built-in translators and even its own glossaries that can be supplemented. However, this program for Russification of programs is free only for a while.

Multilizer

At the moment, this is the most powerful program for translating programs into Russian. Unlike Resource Hacker and similar "resource thieves", it gets access to exactly those that need or can be translated. It has several importers, including "google-translate". Thanks to importers, you can organize automatic translation, or take the translation of each line manually.

The list of these programs has been compiled specifically for those who cannot learn a foreign language in any way, because now you have the opportunity to translate almost any program yourself. The most suitable, but also the most expensive tool for this is Multilizer, although another program may appeal to someone. Or maybe you use localization programs that are not on this list?

This article contains programs (translation memory programs, electronic dictionaries, text recognition programs, statistics calculation programs, application localization programs, website translation programs, other programs for translators), including free ones that allow you to translate more texts in less time. Brief descriptions of these programs are also given with links to primary sources for downloading and installing. We hope you find something useful here.

TRANSLATION MEMORY PROGRAMS

Translation memory (translation memory, translation drives) - programs that allow "not to translate the same thing twice." These are databases that contain previously translated units of text. If a unit is found in the new text that is already in the database, the system automatically adds it to the translation. Such programs significantly save the translator's time, especially if he works with texts of the same type.

Trados. At the time of this writing, it is one of the most popular Translation memory programs. Allows you to work with MS Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, HTML documents and other file formats. Trados has a glossary module. Website: http://www.translationzone.com/trados.html

MemoQ. The functionality is similar to Trados and Déjà Vu, the cost of the program (at the time of writing) is lower than that of more popular systems. Website: http://kilgray.com/

Star Transit. Designed for translation and localization. Currently only compatible with Windows OS. Website: http://www.star-group.net/DEU/group-transit-nxt/transit.html

WordFisher. A free Translation Memory system created and maintained by a professional translator. Website: http://www.wordfisher.com/

Across. There are 4 different versions of the program, differing in the amount of functionality. Website: http://www.across.net/us/translation-memory.aspx

Catnip. Free program, "successor" of the MT2007 program. Website: http://mt2007-cat.ru/catnip/

ELECTRONIC DICTIONARIES

Here we have presented only electronic dictionaries for offline work (without Internet access). There are much more online dictionaries, and a separate article will be devoted to them. Although the Internet has penetrated the most remote corners of the planet, it is useful to have at least 1 dictionary to work offline. We have considered dictionaries for professional use, phrasebooks and dictionaries for language learners are not included here.

ABBYY Lingvo. It currently allows you to translate from 15 languages. There are several versions of the program with different volumes of dictionaries. There is a version for mobile devices. Many modern specialties require at least a superficial knowledge of foreign languages. And this is not to mention how important it is to have communication skills in a popular foreign language in your studies or when moving up the career ladder. It is for these purposes that specialized programs are being developed for translating text into a computer. With their help, it is difficult to achieve a perfect translation of even a simple text, but they are quite suitable for understanding its meaning.

Choosing the best text translation software.

ABBYY Software Ltd., known as the manufacturer of FineReader software and a leading provider of OCR technologies and language applications, has released a special version of the ABBYY Lingvo electronic dictionary designed for the Russian market. ABBYY Lingvo is the best translation software. This is the first electronic dictionary that supports translation in four languages: English, German, Ukrainian and Polish. This is a collection of 11 modern electronic dictionaries available to both personal computer and smartphone users.

ABBYY Lingo contains dictionaries published by renowned authors and publishers around the world such as Collins and Oxford. The range of dictionaries is complemented by extensive explanations in English, German and Ukrainian. All sources were developed or updated in 2005-2008. ABBYY Lingvo guarantees high quality and accuracy of translations. The product is intended for people who have to work with foreign languages at work or school, or simply learn a new language. The dictionary contains about 3.7 million translations of over a million terms. In terms of the number of words contained in one database of the product, the developers have set a new record, and at the same time, the software is offered at a reasonable price, comparable to other electronic dictionaries.

In addition to translation options, ABBYY Lingvo offers access to phonetic notations, example comments, explanations of grammar rules and word forms. The database contains 35 thousand words in different languages, registered by professional lecturers who are native speakers. The system is equipped with a modern, convenient and functional user interface that offers the possibility of instant translation of words highlighted by the cursor by displaying a window with the translation. Explanatory dictionaries and full-text search capability across all vocabulary resources provide quick and easy access to a wealth of linguistic knowledge useful for both casual language learners and professional translators. The program comes with a special application Lingvo Tutor, which helps to learn a foreign language.

The mobile version of the ABBYY Lingvo application can be installed on devices with Symbian or Windows Mobile systems. The dictionary in the mobile version offers access to the same dictionary database as the desktop version, while retaining most of its features. Thanks to the mobile version, the dictionary is at hand almost always when it is needed: on a business trip or on vacation, during business negotiations or in a library, restaurant, shop or museum.

Babylon is a state-of-the-art translator software that translates words and sentences in the world's most popular languages. It can also translate websites and pronounce words.

Advantages:

  • many languages;
  • website translation;

Flaws:

  • average quality of automatic translations.

The Babylon interface is by default a dictionary module for the computer. Just enter a word, select multiple languages, and you can already use the translation and pronunciation of the word. Additional modules are available at the bottom of the interface. One of them is automatic text translation. The procedure is similar - after selecting languages, we get an automatic translation of this text. You can insert a piece of text and the program will automatically recognize what language it was written in.

Babylon also offers website translation, but this option is hidden. Click "Menu" and then "Translate Web Page". The same operation can be performed by right-clicking the program icon in the system tray, which is located in the lower right corner of the desktop. The website translation will appear in the default browser window.

The free version uses standard dictionaries. The translated text can be understood, but in most cases, the translation is only good for understanding the meaning. The full version of the Babylon program also has the ability to automatically listen to the translated text. In the free version, the user can only use English. Babylon is a pronunciation dictionary and module for translating sentences, texts and websites. Its translation into Russian is not perfect, so if we have constant access to the Internet, it is worth considering an alternative in the form of Google translator.

Free Language Translator is a universal translator that uses Google Translate technology. Thanks to this, we can translate the text by choosing one of 50 languages! The program itself can determine the language in which the text is written and evaluate the accuracy of the translation.

Advantages:

  • translation between 50 languages;
  • automatic language detection;
  • the ability to create a custom dictionary.

Flaws:

  • internet connection required;
  • sometimes freezes;
  • problems reading PDF in some languages.

Free Language Translator offers the possibility to create a personal dictionary with corrected translation. This feature is quite useful because Google Translate technology is far from perfect. It is effective when you need to understand the general meaning of the text. If you need an accurate translation, the application is not particularly effective. The software is very easy to use. You can enter the text to be translated manually, paste from the clipboard or upload from a file. Free Language Translator supports the most popular text file formats: PDF, DOC, RTF, HTML and TXT. Unfortunately, import does not always work correctly. In a word, this is an ideal translator for extreme situations when you need a translator from exotic languages.

TranslateIt! is a very good translator for Mac OS X. It supports many languages including English, German, French, Spanish and Russian. The application allows you to translate from Russian and English into any available language and vice versa. A big advantage is the excellent integration with the system. For example, each word can be translated by typing it, pasting it, dragging it into an area of the program window, or moving the cursor. TranslateIt! during operation does not require an Internet connection, works offline. In addition to the translation itself, the tool supports language learning. All dictionaries for the program are free and can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. 20 day trial. Supports Mac OS X 10.6 and newer.

Dicter is a useful program for direct translation of texts from web browsers and any other programs running on Windows. The application is offered to users completely free of charge. This program has been designed in such a way that it provides simple and fast intuitive operation. The application is placed on the taskbar. To use it, simply select this piece of text with the mouse and press the Ctrl + Alt key combination, after which its translation will appear next to the selected text.

Due to the fact that the needs of users are very diverse, you can change the font size so that reading the translation is comfortable. With a standard installation of the program, it starts at system startup. If that doesn't work for you, just right-click the program's icon in the taskbar and uncheck "Run with Windows". The application does not introduce any unwanted changes when setting its own home page in the browser and does not display ads, registration is also not required. The program does an excellent job with the accuracy of translations, due to the fact that it uses Google translator - this is its unofficial client. The downside here is that there is no copy of the translation and that an Internet connection is required to complete the translation.

The window size automatically adapts to the amount of text - this is a great feature, because when translating several lines of text, the program window does not take up much space. The application, despite its small size, is very efficient and does not load the system - transfers are carried out at a high speed, while other programs running at the same time are slower.

Easy Translator (the successor to Ace Translator) is a small, handy program that allows you to translate text from one of the 91 supported languages (including, of course, Russian and English) to any other. In many languages, the TTS feature is also available, which is a text-to-speech translation. The program uses online translation systems and allows you to easily translate the content of websites, chats or emails. Ace Translator can also be very useful for people learning foreign languages.

Easy Translator is fully adapted to the needs of modern users and is very easy to use. Paste the text into the top window, select the original language (if the program does not automatically detect it) and the target language, click the "Translate" button and get the translated text. The translated text can be saved, printed and spoken with the TTS function, and saved as an mp3 audio file. An unregistered trial version allows you to use the program for 14 days. After this period, you must purchase a full license or remove the program from your computer.

Why else do you need translation software? With their help, you can quickly get any information you are interested in, which is sometimes difficult to find even on the Internet in your native language. Unfortunately, all programs and systems are far from perfect, but in most cases, translation allows you to easily understand the source text in a foreign language. You can choose the most suitable translation program for you or your specialization in a simple, proven way - by trial and error.
