It is common knowledge that the running time laptop / netbook much less battery life when working in one of the systems Linux, than in Windowsinstalled on the same machine.
There are various tricks that can be applied to your laptop / netbook to save battery power, but many of them depend on hardware, distribution, and some are outdated or too difficult to install for regular users, etc.

TLP (TLP - Linux Advanced Power Management) is a more advanced battery power management utility for Linuxwhich applies different settings automatically upon login and each time you change the power source, depending on your distribution and hardware.

Recently released TLP 0.8having received some improvements for ThinkPad, support for predictable network interface names, as well as other changes and bug fixes.

Changes in the new version TLP 0.8:

  1. General: TLP_DEFAULT_MODE: change the standard operating mode to AC when no power source is detected (only for embedded hardware and some desktops)
  2. Radio Device: Bluetooth State Restore
  3. Radio Device Wizard (tlp-rdw): Supports ThinkPad OneLink Dock Basic / Pro for connect and disconnect events; determining systemd "predicted network interface names" for WWAN
  4. ThinkPad Batteries: tpacpi-bat: new upstream version 2.2: get ASL path from / sys / class / power_supply / * / device / path; avoiding unnecessary kernel messages "AE_NOT_FOUND"; tlp-stat: various improvements
  5. USB: removed USB_DRIVER_BLACKLIST
  6. tlp-stat: By default, warnings for atta errors are displayed
  7. Various bug fixes, for example, defining kernel configuration in tlp-stat via PM_RUNTIME \u003d N; TLP calibration fixes; ignore missing files in / proc / sys / fs / xfs
According to the changelog, the "USB_DRIVER_BLACKLIST" feature was removed because it caused problems with AC / BAT switching and USB hot plugging (required for udevd v221 and above).

Installation TLP in Ubuntu / Linux Mint

Before proceeding with the installation TLP, there are several conditions that it is desirable to fulfill:

The first ... If you have added any energy saving settings / scripts, etc., remove them or TLP may not work correctly;
Second ... Delete laptop-mode-tools ("sudo apt-get remove laptop-mode-tools").

Now open a terminal, copy and run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: linrunner / tlp
sudo apt-get update

For computers or servers, the power consumption of the operating system doesn't really matter, but when it comes to laptops and other portable devices, things change dramatically. We want our device to run as long as possible on battery power and consume as little battery power as possible.

This is greatly influenced by the operating system, how much the processor, hard drive will be loaded, whether bluetooth and wifi adapters will be enabled. All this consumes energy and everything can be customized. In this article, we'll take a look at how to set up Ubuntu power saving and make your laptop run as long as possible.

You don't always need maximum power and performance. This is necessary in games or when using heavy programs, but unnecessary when watching movies or surfing the Internet, and even more so, it is not necessary when you are not near your computer. There are several power management options in Ubuntu settings to help you improve power saving.

Open system settings, then item Food:

Here you can set how much idle time you need to put the computer into sleep mode, what to do if the battery charge drops to a critical level or when you close the laptop lid.

2. Disable Bluetooth

The Bluetooth module consumes energy and a lot, I hope you remember how quickly the phone's batteries were discharged when you forgot to turn off bluetooth. And here it is constantly on and constantly consumes energy even if it is not needed at the moment.

Disable Bluetooth can be disabled using the icon on the panel, just toggle the slider to value Off or click Disable Bluetooth in older versions.

To completely disable Bluetooth, remove its service from the system startup, and also add the command to startup:

sudo rfkill block bluetooth

Also, if you plan to completely disable bluetooth, it is advisable to add its drivers to the blacklist:

sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/no-bluetooth.conf

blacklist btusb
blacklist bluetooth

3. Disable Wifi and use Ethernet

If you use Wifi wireless technology, you should know that it also consumes a lot of energy, so it is better to replace it with a more energy efficient wired Internet. Even in the background, when you are not connected to any network, your wifi card will scan the air to find available networks.

Turning off wifi is easy too. To do this, just click on the network management indicator and select turn off wifi:

To automatically turn off wifi at system startup, add the command to startup:

sudo rfkill block wifi

4. Screen brightness

Obviously, the brighter the screen, the more power it consumes. The most reliable and most efficient way to reduce the power consumption of Ubuntu is to lower the brightness.

We don't always need the maximum brightness, just make it the way you like it. To change the brightness, you can use hotkeys on the keyboard or system settings.

In the system settings, open the item Brightness and lock. Then adjust the brightness adjustment slider, you can also check Dim screen to save power.

Also, developers from the Ubuntu kernel development team noticed that LCD screens use less power with light wallpapers. It takes 1-2% more current to draw dark colors.

If the brightness doesn't change, try adding acpi_backlight \u003d vendor to the kernel parameters in Grub. After updating the configuration and rebooting, everything should work.

Also, you can change the brightness directly through the terminal, for this use the xbacklight utility:

sudo apt-get install xbacklight
$ xbacklight -set 15

5. Disconnect external USB devices

You can connect various USB devices to your laptop, such as flash drives, webcams, phones, etc. But they all consume energy. Unplug devices you don't need now, and safely remove flash drives, MTP cameras and external drives.

6. Disconnect other unnecessary devices

Webcams, GSM modems and other devices also consume power and it is better to turn them off. For example, to disable a webcam, you need to add its driver to the blacklist:

sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/no-webcam.conf

blacklist uvcvideo

You can see all active devices with a command like this:

Unplug any unused devices, just be careful not to unplug anything unnecessary.

7. Disable the discrete graphics card

If your laptop has the ability to switch video cards from integrated into the processor to a more powerful discrete one, then it is advisable to turn off the second one. This will greatly reduce the power consumption of Ubuntu.

You can usually use the vgaswitcheroo module for this. To disable the second GPU run:

sudo -i
$ echo OFF\u003e / sys / kernel / debug / vgaswitcheroo / switch

8. Close unnecessary applications

The more programs you use, the more power the processor consumes, and the more activity of the RAM and hard drive. We always have a lot of programs open, for example, VLC, Chrome, Terminal, Rhythmbox and so on. But we do not use all of them.

See which applications are open in the sidebar and complete the ones you don't need. To close the program, just right-click on its icon and click close.

9. Don't use Flash Player

A program for streaming video and other flash content - Flash Player consumes a lot of energy. Therefore, not using it will further extend the ubuntu runtime on your battery.

Use a browser where you can enable Flash on demand. For example, Firefox can be configured to turn on Flash only when you really need it, and Chrome has a PowerSaver plugin that allows you to do the same.

Use hardware acceleration to watch movies and videos. This offloads video processing to the GPU, thereby reducing CPU utilization and power consumption. This technology is supported by VLC and MPV. You also need to enable hardware acceleration in browsers.

10. Use a lightweight desktop environment

Desktop environments such as KDE, Cinnamon, Unity, Gnome consume much more energy than lightweight environments, since there are many background services and applications that are running and running by default. Therefore, it is better to choose a lighter environment such as LXDE, LXQt, or XFCE.

11. Use TLP

TLP is a very popular tool that improves Ubuntu's power saving by adjusting various kernel parameters and power consumption for different computer devices.

You can configure the following parameters:

  • Laptop timeout and timeout before dumping data to hard drive;
  • Changing the processor frequency;
  • Power distribution for cores in multi-core systems;
  • Ubuntu hard drive power management;
  • Power management of PCI devices;
  • Power saving mode for Wifi;
  • Disabling the drive;
  • Ubuntu power saving mode for sound card;

The default utility contains settings that will greatly increase laptop autonomy and will suit most users. To install the utility use the command:

sudo apt-get install tlp

Then add it to startup:

sudo systemctl enable tlp

Energy Tracking

It is necessary not only to be able to improve the energy saving of ubuntu, but also to track energy consumption in order to understand in time what exactly is consuming the battery. For these purposes, you can use the powertop utility. Install it using the command:

sudo apt install powertop

Then create a report for the time you want, for example, 60 seconds:

sudo powertop --time \u003d 60 --html \u003d power_report.html

findings

We've covered enough ways you can improve the power efficiency of Ubuntu 16.04 and extend your laptop's offline time. If you know other methods, be sure to share them in the comments!

There are many different settings for saving battery power on portable devices such as laptops, laptops, netbooks, etc., but most of them are tied to the hardware used or the installed Linux distribution, so installing energy-saving options is not always possible for ordinary users. Such a wonderful utility as TLP came to the meeting for solving this problem.

TLP - a powerful console utility that allows you to automatically configure efficient energy consumption, without being tied to specific distributions or hardware configurations.

Thus, using TLP, you can quickly and easily optimize the power supply of the system without delving into the intricacies of the options of your laptop. However, those who wish can independently set the most preferable settings by choosing them for themselves.

Installing TLP on Ubuntu

What you need to do first:

  • remove all energy saving settings and scripts (for example, in /etc/rc.local), otherwise TLP will not work as expected;
  • uninstall laptop-mode-tools utility.

Installation is available from the PPA using the commands below:

Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: linrunner / tlp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tlp tlp-rdw

TLP starts with system startup, so after installation you will need to re-enter the session. If you don't want to do this, you can run the command in the terminal:

Sudo tlp start

Optionally, you can supply two more packages:

  • smartmontools - viewing information S.M.A.R.T;
  • ethtool - utility for disabling Wake-on-LAN.
sudo apt-get install smartmontools ethtool

ThinkPad owners will also find it a good idea to install a number of utilities by running in a terminal:

Sudo apt-get install tp-smapi-dkms acpi-call-tools

There are many different tweaks that will increase battery life, but many of them depend on the hardware, Linux distribution. Often times, tweaks are already outdated or too complex for the average user to use.

TLP is an advanced, console-based power management utility that automatically applies the correct settings for specific hardware and knows about the different Linux distributions and their capabilities.

TLP applies the following settings depending on the power source (battery or mains):

  • laptop mode and dirty buffer timeouts.
  • processor frequency including "turbo boost" / "turbo core".
  • low-power scheduler for multi-core or hyper-threading.
  • advanced power management of hard drives and the duration of the spindle rotation.
  • aggressive SATA Power Management (ALPM)
  • pCI Express Power Management (PCIe ASPM).
  • real-time power management of PCI (e) devices.
  • radeon KMS power management but not fglrx.
  • Wi-Fi power saving modes.
  • power off optical drives.

Additional TLP Features:

  • i / O schedulers for each disk separately.
  • automatic suspend USB (autosuspend) with support for device blacklists.
  • power saving modes for audio devices - hda_intel, ac97.
  • enabling and disabling integrated wifi, bluetooth or wwan devices when starting or shutting down the system.
  • recovery of radio devices at system startup.
  • wizard for radio devices and toggle device state from network events to either dock or not dock it.
  • disable Wake On LAN.
  • wWAN recovery after suspend, hibernate.
  • battery charging thresholds for IBM / Lenovo ThinkPads.
  • battery calibration for ThinkPads.

TLP applies the settings automatically at startup and every time the power supply is changed. Roughly speaking, one has only to install the TLP and a lot of fuss will work. However, there are settings that need to be manually specified for use, such as enabling or disabling WiFi, Bluetooth or Wwan (3G or UMTS) devices.

Installing TLP.

Before installing, know the following:

  • If you used any tweaks and registered their call in /etc/rc.local, then you need to remove them.
  • you need to remove laptop-mode-tools (sudo apt-get remove laptop-mode-tools).

Installing TLP on Ubuntu.

Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: linrunner / tlp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tlp tlp-rdw

TLP will start itself, but for the first time it will not be superfluous to start it if you reboot.
sudo /etc/init.d/tlp restart

The following packages are optional:

  • smartmontools - to view S.M.A.R.T.
  • ethtool - to disable Wake On LAN.

Put them sudo apt-get install smartmontools ethtool if you wish.

ThinkPad laptops may require:

  • tp-smapi-dkms - ThinkPad battery charging thresholds.
  • acpi-call-tools - battery charging thresholds on Sandy Bridge platform or newer (X220 / T420, X230 / T430, etc.).

If you have ThinkPad or Intel Sandy Bridge platform, then install the required sudo apt-get install tp-smapi-dkms acpi-call-tools
