Hide and show the toolbar. Quick Launch

Sometimes users are faced with the fact that the taskbar disappeared. Neither you go to the Start menu, nor run programs to see ... In general, a complete inconvenience. How to return the taskbar to its place?

If the taskbar is missing, do not rush to panic and roll back the system or reinstall the OS: perhaps not everything is as bad as it seems. If the desktop is missing only the taskbar, and all the shortcuts and gadgets are in place, most likely the taskbar is just hidden.

To show taskbar again, you need to move the mouse cursor to the place where it was (the standard location is at the bottom of the screen). If the taskbar does not appear, move the cursor to the top of the screen and to the sides: the panel may have simply been moved. The cursor needs to be moved to the very edge of the screen.

How to make the taskbar no longer disappear? For this you need disable taskbar hiding. To do this, go to the Control Panel (Start - Control Panel) and select "Taskbar and the Start menu. Alternatively, you can right-click on the taskbar and select "Properties". In the window that opens, uncheck the box next to “Automatically hide the taskbar” and click OK.

If the taskbar disappeared when you start Windows XP, it’s probably due to damage to user account settings. The “symptoms” of this problem are the taskbar that does not appear when logging into the system and the inability to open the Start menu with the key combination Ctrl + Escape. In this case, if you go into Windows in, the taskbar is displayed.

there is several ways to solve this problem:

 • To start Windows in a “clean” boot mode with a minimal set of drivers - perhaps the driver loaded by a certain program is the reason that the taskbar has disappeared (usually video adapters cause this problem). If so, you just need to remove the problematic driver.
 • Log in as an administrator and create a new user account to replace the damaged one.
 • If the previous methods did not help, perform a system restore. In this case, all damaged Windows files will be replaced with normal ones, and your personal files and installed programs will remain untouched.

If you not only lost the taskbar, but also did not boot the desktop (icons, gadgets, etc.), this means that explorer.exe process failed. We already described ways to solve this problem in the article “”, but just in case, we will repeat the main points.

To start run task managerusing the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Delete or Ctrl + Shift + Escape. In the "File" menu, select "New Task (Run ...)", enter explorer.exe, click OK. The desktop should be back in place with the taskbar.

After this, you must scan the system for viruses, and also check the registry for keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ SOFTWARE \\ Microsoft \\ WindowsNT \\ CurrentVersion \\ Image File Execution Options \\ explorer.exe and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ SOFTWARE \\ Microsoft \\ WindowsNT \\ CurrentVersion \\ Image File Execution Options \\ iexplorer.exe. If these keys are present, delete them.

So, if you have lost the taskbar, it is worth suspecting three main reasons:

 • someone turned on automatic hiding the taskbar;
 • the user account in Windows XP has been corrupted;
 • explorer.exe did not complete, most likely due to a virus.

If the "soft" ways of dealing with the problem (creating a new account, removing defective drivers, cleaning the system from viruses) do not help, you should not rush to reinstall the system anyway. It's better try to restore the systemHaving rolled back to one of the created ones, then you do not have to reinstall all the programs.

Customize Windows7 Toolbar

Hello, friends! I am glad for our new meeting and in this lesson, I want to continue to acquaint you with the device and tricks. And today we’ll talk about the toolbar, and in particular about the quick launch bar and the language bar. We will learn how to configure and change everything for ourselves, as well as how to return the language bar if it suddenly disappeared from your desktop.

So let's get to know each other and see what a toolbar is. As a rule, it is located at the bottom of the desktop and is a long panel, conventionally divided into three parts. In the lower left corner is the start menu icon. It is an intermediary between programs and folders on a computer. Here you can easily open any folder or run the program. This menu opens simply by left-clicking on the Windows icon or the key with the Windows logo.

The Start menu is used to perform the following tasks: launch programs, open the most frequently used folders;
search for files, folders and programs;
computer settings;
getting help on working with the Windows operating system;
computer shutdown;
End a user’s Windows session or switch to another user’s account

The Start menu is a pretty big topic, so we will devote a separate lesson to it and consider it later.
In the meantime, continue our lesson. In the middle of the taskbar are the buttons of all running. at the moment, programs and applications. Thanks to this, we can quickly switch between them. It is enough to left-click on the program icon and it will open. You can run several programs, and then only switch between them.

And finally - the notification area (sometimes it is also called tray). Here, first of all, is the input language switching panel (language panel). Its presence allows you to control the keyboard layout. Here - the clock, the Internet connection indicator and the current speaker volume are located. If you click on the small triangle, then the area of hidden icons will open. In the corner itself, a button (indicated by an arrow), which serves to quickly close all active windows, and pressing it again opens again.

All three areas have their own settings. To open the settings menu, in the start button area, right-click, select the tab "Properties". A window will open “Taskbar property and start menu”, in which you can perform actions to configure and change the toolbar.

There are three tabs at the top. Taskbar, Start Menu, and Toolbars . At the bottom of the window there is an instruction, how to customize the taskbar. You can use it or read the article to the end (h then I advise you).
How to customize the taskbar?
Pin taskbar . By checking this box, you can fix the taskbar on the monitor screen in the place where it is currently located. However, it will be impossible to stretch, displace or collapse. As a rule, the check mark on this item is set by default. If you want to increase the height of the taskbar (when located on the top or bottom of the screen) or its width (when located on the left or right of the screen), as well as change the size of the notification area and toolbar, you need to uncheck the box, click the "Apply" button "And" OK. " After that, you can do all the above operations by dragging the borders of the desired areas with the mouse.
Hide taskbar automatically . Activating this option will allow you to use the maximum desktop area during operation, since the control panel will be hidden and will no longer appear on the screen on top of all windows. To open the panel in this mode, move the mouse cursor to the edge of the screen along which it is located.

Use small icons . This option allows you to reduce the icons of programs and open applications located on the taskbar. Thus, it is possible to achieve an expansion of the workspace and an increase in the number of displayed elements on the panel itself.

The position of the taskbar on the screen. Allows you to select from the drop-down menu the place where the panel will be placed on the screen. There are four options at your disposal: Bottom, Top, Right or Left.
Taskbar buttons. At this point you can choose how the icons of running programs and open windows will be displayed on the taskbar:

Always group, hide tags . This mode is activated by default and allows you to expand free space on the taskbar due to the fact that the icons of similar open applications are grouped, and the icons themselves do not have signatures of their names. For example, if you opened several windows of the explorer at once, then they will be grouped into a single icon on the taskbar, which will be displayed as several rectangles superimposed on each other.
Group when filling out the taskbar. Unlike the previous version, this mode is more informative for the user. All open application icons are located on the taskbar separately and have signatures for the names of the windows in which they are running. Grouping of icons occurs only if the taskbar is full and there is no free space for placing new icons.
Do not group. The grouping of open program icons does not occur under any circumstances.
In the middle of the Taskbar tab, there is the Notification Area item, which is responsible for setting up the display of system icons and icons of background programs, as well as their messages in the notification area (tray).

The notification area is customizable. After pressing the button Customization , a window will open in front of you with a list of all the background and system application icons, next to which you can select their behavior in the tray from the three available options:

Below the general list of all the icons are the On / Off points of the system icons (Clock, Volume, Network, Power and Support Center, etc.), as well as Restoring the default behavior of the icons. You can also activate the option Always display icons and notifications on the taskbar.

And finally, in the lower area of the bookmark we are considering, there is a setting for the option Desktop preview using AeroPeek. AeroPeek functions do not support all versions of Windows7, but only starting with Home Extended. Activation of this function allows, when you hover over the Minimize all windows button, make a quick temporary viewing of the contents of the Desktop. At the same time, open windows are not minimized, as happens when you click on this button, but become transparent.

The next tab is the “Start Menu”. Here are the options that are responsible for configuring Windows system settings. When you click on the "Configure" tab, you will see a huge number of settings. I will not describe everything. As I said above, we will become acquainted with this element in detail later.

And finally “Toolbar” .

Initially, the system includes only a few standard toolbars: Address, Links, Tablet PC Input Panel and Desktop. But as new applications are installed, the list of these panels will expand.

You can also create your own toolbars. To do this, right-click on an empty spot on the Taskbar and select the Panels item in the context menu that opens and then the Create toolbar command.
Next, in the window that opens, you must specify the folder whose elements the created panel should display.

The display of toolbars is controlled at an intuitive level. To do this, just uncheck or check the box next to the desired panel and click the Apply button.

And one more nuance. Sometimes, at some of your actions, the “language” switch icon disappears. In such cases, do not panic, call someone for help, and try to solve the problem yourself. There are at least several ways to solve the problem.

The simplest one is in an empty place, in the toolbar area, right-click. In the menu that opens, select "Panels" and here find the "Language Bar". Check that there would be a check against her. If it is not, then put it. An icon in the language bar should appear. If this does not happen, do the following. Start menu ---> Control Panel ---> Language and Regional Standards ---> Languages tab ---> More ---> More and uncheck the box next to Turn off additional text services. Everything should fall into place.

This is where this lesson ends. Of course, this is not all the secrets of Windows7, and we will return to this topic more than once. Write whether the lesson was useful, and whether everything is clear. If you have questions, ask. And in our next meeting, we will talk about difficult things - about the correct removal of programs and files from your computer. In order not to miss the release of the article, subscribe to the news of my blog. See you!

Sometimes, in order to find where the display of the bookmarks bar in some browsers is turned on, it may take several minutes. Let this short guide help users in this matter. After all, sometimes we need to quickly find a link to the desired website and quickly open it. Sometimes a lot depends on this. Below is how it is done in different browsers - from more popular to less common.

Google chrome

Press button Menu.

Select item Bookmarks.

Check the box Show bookmarks bar:

Opera

Press button Opera.

Go to menu Bookmarks.

Check the box Display panel:

Mozilla firefox

Right-click on the empty field next to the tab title.

Check the box Bookmarks Bar:

Yandex browser

Press button Menu.

Go to menu Bookmarks.

Select Show bookmarks bar:

Internet Explorer 11

Right-click on the window title.

Check the box Favorites Panel

What is the taskbar and how to configure it? The taskbar is not a large horizontal panel usually located at the bottom of the Windows desktop. Although, with a certain setting, the taskbar is easy to place on either side of the monitor.

Usually it houses the Start menu, icons for accessing programs, language bar, clock, and so on. During operation, the icons of running applications, open folders and files are also displayed there.

In the default settings, the taskbar is always visible. But if you wish, you can easily hide it. How to do it in Windows 7, XP or Vista:

Find less space on the panel for icons and buttons. Right click on it and go to "Properties".

Check the box next to "automatically hide the taskbar." Agree to the OK changes.

The taskbar will disappear, and in the future it will be displayed only if you hover over this area of the mouse.

If you just need it to be visible all the time, do the same, but uncheck the box.

How to pin a program to the taskbar.

Usually, after installing a new operating system, after some time, the desktop of any user is simply "littered" with icons of different applications. Some icons are used frequently, others less often, and some very rarely. So, it’s wise to pin the icons of constantly used applications to the taskbar. At least to have quick access to them.

For Windows 7.

When the application is running, right-click on its icon and click on the item "pin the program to the taskbar".

For Windows XP and Vista.

Find the program you want to pin. Click on its icon and, while holding the mouse, move it to the taskbar (certainly to the right of the Start menu).

You can always change the order of pinned programs by clicking on them and moving to another place on the panel. In Windows 7, you can reorder program and document buttons in the same way.

Remove the program from the taskbar.

To remove a program from the taskbar:

On Windows 7

In the exact opposite of pinning, right-click on the desired icon and select the "remove the program from the taskbar" checkbox.

On Windows XP and Vista.

Just click on the icon with the right mouse button, mark the “delete” item and confirm the action.

How to group or ungroup buttons on the taskbar.

The more fixed programs you have on the taskbar, the more difficult it is to figure them out. And in the end, there will come a time when you are completely confused in them.

Do not forget that the buttons on the panel are easy to group. For example, several simultaneously open web pages or documents. That will undoubtedly free up space on the panel.

Windows 7

After finding a free place on the panel, right-click on it and go to the "properties". In the "taskbar buttons" section, select the option you need from the drop-down list. Three options are available: group when filling out the taskbar; always group hide labels and do not group. Click OK.

Windows XP and Vista

Also open the "properties" window. Here you can check the box "group similar taskbar buttons" or remove. In the first case, similar buttons will be grouped, in the second not. Click OK.

How to customize the taskbar.

Move

By default, the taskbar is located at the bottom of the desktop. But it can also be placed on either side of the monitor. To do this, also in the panel, open the properties window and in the item "position of the taskbar ...", select the item you need.

How to resize the taskbar.

Move the mouse cursor to the very top edge of the panel and when a two-sided arrow appears, stretch the panel to the width you need. Then release the mouse button.

Note: If you can’t move or change the taskbar, just click on it with the context mouse button and remove the checkmark from the "dock taskbar" option.

As you can see, customizing the taskbar is not difficult. But, a certain user preference will make it much more convenient.

The interface elements that you most often have to deal with while working are Task barand Main menu. To make work as comfortable as possible, you need to configure them.

To open the settings dialog Taskbarsand Main menu(Fig. 5.1), you need to right-click on any free area Taskbarsand in the context menu that appears, select Properties.

Fig. 5.1.Taskbar Settings Dialog Box

The dialog box that appears contains four tabs, and the first, active by default, is called Task bar. The following checkboxes are located on this tab.

Pin taskbar. When this check box is selected Task barwill always be visible on the screen. It cannot be moved or resized. If you clear this check box, you can increase the width Taskbarseither move it to the top, left or right border Desktop.

Hide taskbar automatically. If you check this box, Task barwill automatically hide - when the mouse pointer is outside of it, and appear - when it is at the bottom border Desktop(or at another border if Task barmoved).

MULTIMEDIA COURSE

The material in this chapter corresponds to the chapter.“Taskbar and Start Menu” multimedia course - in video lectures and interactive tasks you will see all the practical actions.

Display taskbar on top of other windows. If this check box is unchecked, when moving any window down Task barwill be overlapped by this window. Otherwise, it is always on top of all windows, regardless of their location.

Group similar buttons in the taskbar. This function allows you to save space on Taskbars. If you are working with several duplicates of the same program, for example, viewing several pages in a browser, the window buttons of these programs are grouped and turned into a menu (Fig. 5.2), that is, one button corresponds to all open windows of the same type. If you click this button, a menu opens where you can select a window to activate. At the same time, you can immediately close the entire group of windows by clicking on the group button on Taskbarsright click and execute the command Close group.

Fig. 5.2.Grouped windows on the taskbar

Display Quick Launch. The quick launch bar is located to the right of the button Start. There are several buttons on this panel. You can also independently place program shortcuts on the Quick Launch. On the Quick Launch, it’s convenient to place shortcuts to the applications you use most often. This will allow you to quickly launch the desired program without minimizing the open windows and without accessing Main menu. To add a shortcut to the quick launch bar, you need to drag it to this bar with Desktopor from an open window Conductor.

Do you remember that if the window button located on Taskbars, mouse over, a thumbnail of this window will be displayed. If the check box Display window samples (thumbnails)remove, then when you hover over the window button, the sketch will not be displayed. Instead, a tooltip will appear with the window name. Remember that in any case the window thumbnail will not be displayed if the computer does not support the Aero theme.

Go to the tab Notification area. The notification area is on the right side Taskbars(Fig. 5.3).

Fig. 5.3.Notification Area Tab

In the notification area there are icons that are used to manage system services and running applications. This area may contain icons for the volume control, keyboard layout indicator, network connections, Windows sidebar, clocks, etc. If there are a large number of programs that set their icons in the notification area, the latter may be overloaded.

To free up space in the notification area, you can hide rarely used icons. To do this, check the box. Hide unused icons(set by default).

The notification area can be adjusted more finely using the button Tune. After clicking it, the notification icon settings window will open (Fig. 5.4).

Fig. 5.4.Notification Area Icon Settings Window

It displays all the icons in the notification area. To the right of each icon is a link with which you can configure its status - Hide inactive, Hideor Display. For example, selecting for a specific status icon Hidemeans that it will be hidden regardless of whether the corresponding program or service is active.

Tab Notification areacan enable or disable the display of system icons Volume, Clockand Net. For mobile computers, there is a checkbox Nutrition.

Go to the tab Toolbars(Fig. 5.5). In addition to the standard Taskbarsin the lower part Desktopwindows Vista has several built-in toolbars that can be placed on Taskbarsor anywhere Desktop. To enable the display of a panel, you must select the checkbox next to its name. Here you can enable or disable the display of the quick launch bar.

Address. This panel is a regular address bar, but located on Taskbars(Fig. 5.6). In the address window, you can enter the path to the folder on the disk or the address of the web page - a window will open Conductorwith the specified folder or browser window in which the download of the specified web page will begin. This is convenient because it eliminates the need to open windows. Conductorand Internet Explorer programs.

Fig. 5.6.Address bar

Windows Media Player. If this panel is activated, then when minimizing the program window Windows Media Playeron the Taskbars a small panel with player controls will appear (Fig. 5.7). You can control the playback of multimedia files from Taskbarswithout expanding the player windows.

Fig. 5.7.Windows Media Player Panel

Communication. On the Taskbarsthis panel is called References. If you right-click on the panel Referencesand in the menu that appears, execute the command Open foldera window will open References. There are no links yet, so the folder is empty.

Tablet PC - Input Panel. This panel is usually installed when using input tools implemented in tablet personal computers.

Desktop. When you click on this panel, a list opens in which all the elements (icons) installed on Desktop. Using this panel you can access any icon Desktopwithout minimizing the window (Fig. 5.8).

Fig. 5.8.Panel and menu Desktop

Main menubutton triggered Start, in the operating system Windows Vista has changed, although it has much in common with a similar menu of previous versions (Fig. 5.9). In the title Main menuthe icon of the registered user is located. You can change it - click on it with the mouse button and in the window that opens the user account, select Change your drawing. In this window, it is proposed to select one of several standard drawings, as well as upload your own (for example, your photo).

Fig. 5.9.Main menu

On the left side Main menua list of the most commonly used programs is located. The operating system independently monitors which applications you use most often, and places their shortcuts on the left side Main menu.

On the right side Main menulinks to system folders are located - A computer, Net, Music, Images, Documents, Control Paneletc. Innovation Main menuin Vista is that the list of installed applications ( All programs) is not displayed as submenus, but is built into the main menu. Programs and program groups are now grouped into folders. To open the list of installed programs, click on the item All programs(Fig. 5.10). If you see in the list of programs, for example, a folder Standard, then it contains several programs. To open a folder, you need to click on it with the mouse button. To return to the list of fixed and most frequently launched programs, click on the button Back.

Fig. 5.10.Disclosed group All programs

Another difference Main menuWindows Vista is the ability to quickly find the right program. To do this, enter the name of its executable file in the field To start searching. The operating system will find the specified file and display it in Main menu. You just have to click on it with the mouse button. This method of launching programs is convenient because it allows you to quickly find them: entering calc in the search field will take much less time than searching for a program Calculator at Main menu(Fig. 5.11). In some cases, you can specify several initial letters of the file name.

Fig. 5.11.Calculator Search Result

Consider the settings Main menu. To do this, right-click on Taskbarsand select the item in the drop-down menu Properties. A dialog box that you’ve already seen will appear — except for the tab Start Menu(Fig. 5.12).

Fig. 5.12.Main Menu Settings Tab

Here you can choose a style Main menu. Two options are offered: the option that has already been discussed above, and the classic style. The classic menu was in Windows 2000 and earlier versions (Fig. 5.13). The classic menu is convenient for some users.

Fig. 5.13.Classic Main Menu

In the region of Confidentialityflags are located Store and display a list of recently opened filesand Store and display a list of recently opened programs. If you clear these check boxes, the operating system will not add to Main menushortcuts to frequently used programs and recently opened documents.

To the right of the main menu style switch are two buttons Tune. One of them is active - near the selected switch position. These buttons open dialog boxes in which you can configure some parameters. Main menu(Fig. 5.14).

Fig. 5.14.Start Menu Settings Dialog Box

In the window that appears, you can hide or show some elements Main menu. Here you can configure other parameters, for example, when activating a function Select recently installed programswhen installing a new program, the latter will be highlighted in the menu so you can quickly find it. You can enable the function Display as menufor some system folders. For example, if you enable this function for a folder Control Panelthen all the elements Control panelswill not be displayed in a separate window, but as a submenu, and to select an item, you won’t have to open an extra window (Fig. 5.15).

Fig. 5.15.Panel menu Control Panel

If you uncheck Large iconsicons of commonly used programs in Main menuwill become much smaller.

You can enable or disable drag and drop objects in Main menu, use the context menu and sort the programs by name (in alphabetical order). The latter function is convenient, because programs are often installed during work, and if you do not apply sorting by name, it is difficult to find the right application.

Default to Main menunine frequently used programs are displayed. This number can be changed in the area Start Menu Size.

In the region of Display in the Start menuflags are located Internet linkand Email Link mail. If checked, at the top Main menuinternet browser and email client program shortcuts will always be displayed. By default it is Internet explorerand Windows Mail. If you install alternative programs, such as Opera and The Bat !, and register them in Windows as the default browser and email client, the links in Main menuthey will be launched precisely by them.

It should be noted one more feature of working with shortcuts to frequently used programs. As new programs launch, these shortcuts move around the list. If you have not run the program for a while, its shortcut will disappear from the list. To fix a shortcut in the list of frequently used programs, you need to right-click on it and in the context menu that appears, execute the command Pin to Start menu, and this shortcut will always be in the list. Using command Remove from this listyou can remove the shortcut from the list of frequently used programs.

In this way, Main menuyou can customize as you wish. This is an important point, since it is with Main menuyou will often run programs and open system folders, and the performance of your work depends on it.
