Judging by the experience of buyers, it is impossible to make a confident conclusion about the quality of its implementation: if some owners take their smartphones with them to the pool and take photos underwater, others' smartphones "sink" in a glass of water and completely fail. Either there are some manufacturing defects and not all devices are hermetically sealed, or the flaw is present in the sealing itself and appears randomly. However, we do not recommend relying on the water resistance of the Z3, Z3 Compact or any other modern smartphone, regardless of the level of IP certification. This is a weighty argument when choosing between two otherwise identical smartphones, but we do not recommend buying an expensive and supposedly waterproof smartphone specifically for shooting underwater.

Sony claims that it has the ability to take data from multiple sensors on a smartphone and reliably establish the cause of the failure: if it fits the definition of "misuse," then the warranty is voided. At the same time, the list also includes easily violated restrictions: for example, you should not dive with a smartphone deeper than the declared depth or keep it in chlorinated water for too long (for example, in a pool). Three new devices have emerged from Sony's offerings. One is the Xperia Z3 Compact 8-inch tablet and the other two are the Xperia Z3 and Sony Xperia Z3 Compactt phones. Devices differ mainly in size, battery capacity, resolution and screen diagonal size. In all other respects, all models of the Xperia Z3 family are twins: the same processor, camera and communication modules; only the “Compact” model has 2 GB instead of 3 GB random access memory, but in practice the difference is insignificant.

At first glance, there is nothing interesting in the tablet, and it does not stand out from the crowd of others at all Android devices the same size.

I do not think this is a big problem, especially since the material from which the frame is made is translucent, which visually slims down already small device... The Xperia Z3 Compact measures 127mm x 64.9mm x 8.6mm and weighs just 129 grams. Moreover, it has a 4.6-inch screen. By comparison, the nearly identical body of the Z1C houses a 4.3-inch display.

The layout of the buttons remains unchanged

Not everyone likes Sony's button layout idea, but for me their system is very convenient. Several buttons are located on the right side, the most important of which is the rounded aluminum power button. Directly below it is a small volume switch. Even lower in the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, a small two-stage shutter release button has found its place. This is one of the solutions that have been senselessly abandoned by other manufacturers.

The bezels on the sides of the screen are still haunted by their thickness, but there is more space here - below the display, which is no longer so frightening. The 4.6-inch panel has a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. In the era of 5.5-inch displays, 2K may not be impressive, but in practice the pixel density is sufficient.

Meanwhile, I'm not a fan of Full HD in smartphones, as the difference in 720p quality is almost imperceptible. Fewer pixels for rendering puts less load on the processor and reduces battery consumption. This makes the Xperia Z3 Compact just as fast, if not faster, than its big brother, the Xperia Z3. In terms of performance, this device is off the top shelf and doesn't even bother with only 2GB of RAM.

Materials and quality

All phones from the Sony Xperia Z1 onwards, thanks to the aluminum frame, feel very solid. The body parts of the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact fit together perfectly, nothing moves or creaks. Due to the unusual finish of the frame, it is difficult to deny the individual character of the smartphone, especially if you forget about the existence of the Xperia Z1 Compact of the same shape.

The slightly slippery back panel can be complained about, but the sharp edges help to keep the phone stable in your hand. This time I can't even blame Sony for the quality of the screen, which has very good colors and decent viewing angles. I also have no objection to the material the opaque screen is made of. Glass of very good quality was chosen for the front panel, which I still have not been able to scratch, but rear panel made of either glass or some special type of plastic.

Used in Sony Xperia Z3 Compact 4.6-inch IPS screen this is a completely different class compared to the Xperia Z1 released just a year ago. Contrary to appearances, the pixel density in the Xperii Z3 Compact is not very low, as 319 dpi, which is almost the same as in the case of the iPhone 5s and 6 (326 dpi) and Samsung Galaxy alpha(331 dpi). There are, of course, better smartphones in this regard, at least the large Xperia Z3 (424 dpi), but I consider this density to be the best ratio of form to content.

If we talk about the internals of the new "Compact", then the manufacturer installed a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz, in which 2 GB of RAM is available. Suffice it to say that the system works very quickly and without any delays, no matter what tasks I set for it. Technical characteristics completes 16GB of internal storage with the option to add a 128GB microSD card.

Applications

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has all the wireless technologies you need. This smartphone has an LTE modem and support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. In addition, of course, is used GPS app navigation and an NFC module that allows you to transfer data to other Android devices. It's just a pity that Sony did not offer users a version with a larger memory capacity due to problems associated with transferring data to MicroSD cards in Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

The Xperia Z1 was already one of the longest-running smartphones in production, but in the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact it surpassed it and set the phone's battery life on a single charge. new level almost unattainable for competitors. Sony boasts that, on average, its previous smartphones could last 1.4 business days on a single charge, but new Xperia can work for a full two days without requiring an outlet.

It should be noted that these two days the phone is being used in the maximum endurance mode, and this is ... not far-fetched. I don’t know of a single Android smartphone that manages energy in the same way as the Sony Z3 Compact. After all, this smartphone can work for 8 hours as mobile point access LTE and only lose half your charge! Of course, the big merit here belongs not only to the batteries with a capacity of 2600 mAh, but also to the manufacturer who did Good work to optimize the firmware.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is a unique device. In the segment mobile phones with a screen diagonal of up to 5 inches, there is simply no other flagship on Android, this is the only device that can compete with the Samsung Galaxy Alpha with a 4.7-inch screen. The only downside to the Z3C's image is 2GB instead of 3GB of RAM, but in practice that difference with the larger Xperia Z3 just doesn't feel right.

The real surprise with the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact isn't its performance, its perfect size, its image quality, or even its phenomenal battery life. The biggest advantage of this phone, I think, is its price, namely the value for money. There are no compromises in the form of lower picture parameters and lower battery life, as was the case, for example, in the iPhone 6 compared to the iPhone 6 Plus.

The Xperia Z3 Compact is a top-end smartphone that debuted at around $ 700. I can't think of a single phone in this price range I've tested that performs so well in day-to-day use.

The fashion for mini-smartphones has not yet passed. Various manufacturers now and then announce smaller versions of their flagships, counting on a decent level of sales due to the sounding and catchy name. Unfortunately, in most cases, this is pure, uncluttered marketing in the bad sense of the word. With flagships, mini-copies often have nothing in common, except for a distantly similar design, and their technical filling leaves much to be desired. We swam - we know.

⇡ Appearance and ergonomics

Let's start with the obvious. Smartphones with a screen diagonal of 4.6 inches are not in vogue now - we have already begun to forget how convenient it is to use them. The Z3 Compact fits easily into any pocket and doesn't stick out of it. The device is really easy to operate with one hand - even the fair sex will not have to reach with a thumb to any of the four edges. Hands do not get tired of prolonged communication with this gadget, because it weighs less than 130 grams.

Sony engineers pleasantly surprised us by increasing the Compact's display - from 4.3 to 4.6 inches, but the dimensions of the device remained the same. They are the same for both Compact models: 127 mm high and 65 mm wide. It is noteworthy that the thickness of the case was reduced by almost a millimeter - from 9.5 mm to 8.6 mm. In general, the Z3 Compact turned out to be even smaller than its predecessor.

The arrangement of the keys and connectors on the device is the same as in the vast majority of Android smartphones - you get used to the Z3 Compact very quickly. Perhaps the main innovation in terms of design can be considered the transfer of the external speaker to the front panel - the expectation that the phone is usually placed on the table "face" up, so that the speaker will not be covered.

The branded round power key, made of aluminum, now has a slightly larger size. Next to it is a swing button for adjusting the volume and a dedicated hardware camera key. All buttons have a short and distinct stroke.

The side faces of the new "Compact" body are made of transparent plastic. Due to this, they appear to be concave, although in reality they are, of course, convex. The inscriptions on the ends cast a shadow “deep into” the smartphone - an interesting optical effect. At the corners of the case there is special inserts that protect the case from impacts if dropped. Whether this works is unknown: we did not dare to check.

The slots for cards are hidden here under special plastic plugs - in order to maintain the tightness of the structure. The device is protected against ingress of dust and moisture according to IP65 / 68 standards. The manufacturer claims that if all the plugs are tightly closed, the gadget can be in fresh water at a depth of one and a half meters for no more than thirty minutes.

Under one flap there is a Micro-USB interface and a slot for a microSD memory card, under the other there is a slot for Nano-SIM. Between them is the traditional Sony magnetic connector for connecting the device to the docking station. On the top there is a universal 3.5 mm audio jack for connecting a wired headset, and on the bottom there is a loop for a strap.

The "back" of the new Compact is made of glass, while its predecessor was made of plastic. Despite this, the smartphone does not slip at all in the hands, but it looks much more expensive and more interesting. previous version (the opinion of the author may not coincide with the opinion of the editorial board. - approx. ed. ). The rear panel houses the lens of the main 20-megapixel camera along with a diode flash.

The available color gamut of the Z3 Compact is its own - it does not echo either with the colors of the "regular" Xperia Z3, or with the coloring of the Z1 Compact. This season, Sony designers are joining the traditional black and white colors with a vibrant orange and mint green. In advertising photographs, the new colors look very interesting and unusual. Obviously, they will resonate with young people.

Sony at a press conference in Berlin presented the sequel to the mini-flagship Xperia Z3 Compact. The smartphone is made in the best traditions of Sony - no cuts in hardware and functionality, the same design as the older model. In terms of dimensions, the device corresponds to its predecessor Xperia Z1 Compact, but it has become a little thinner (8.64 versus 9.5 mm) and lighter (129 to 137 g), and the screen has become larger. The compact gadget also received an updated design and a new palette of colors - black, white, red and green, which were replaced by pink and lime, respectively.

Sony Xperia Z3 received technical specifications similar to the flagship line: 4.6 "IPS-display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels with Live Color LED technology, a quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset with a frequency of 2.5 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB internal storage expandable with microSD cards, 20.7MP camera with 25mm G Lens, BIONZ image processor, SteadyShot image stabilization, 2600mAh battery, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Xperia Home shell. The Xperia Z3 Compact has not deprived of audio capabilities, providing the device with a full range of technologies - Hi-Res Audio, DSEE HX and S-Force Front Surround. In place and an increased level of protection against moisture and dust (IP65 / 68).

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact can "make friends" with most of the equipment of the Japanese brand thanks to wireless Wi-Fi interfaces, Bluetooth, NFC, and PS4 Remote Play support. The latter will help gamers turn a smartphone into a second display (you need the PlayStation App) or completely replace the PS Vita (using a special cradle and DUALSHOCK 4 joystick, you can play on the console remotely).
