How I chose the camera

4. Xiaomi MiJia 1080p- from $ 35

These are the main models, each of which has several modifications. Most often, the first generation of the camera turns out to be a trial one, and in the future they add a sensor with a higher resolution, the possibility of night shooting and other useful chips to the device.

I crossed out the first two models at once. These are cameras from 2017 and recently went on sale. Most likely, these models will have various jambs and bugs, you will have to wait for adapted plugins and fixes in the firmware. The prices for new items for the first time are higher than those stated by the manufacturer.

Of the remaining four devices, the choice fell on the cheapest. It has all the features I need, a nice appearance and a nice price. At the moment, this is one of the most affordable IP cameras not only in the Xiaomi lineup, but also among competitors.

More sophisticated cameras differ only in the presence of rotary mechanisms with the possibility of remote control and various software chips.

What else you should know before buying IP cameras

As you know, Xiaomi mainly focuses on the Chinese domestic market. If mass models of smartphones and tablets are produced in international versions for sale in other countries, then small cheap devices are most often intended only for “their own”.

Even if small gadgets are released with a US, EU or International mark, this often only indicates the presence of additional firmware languages.

Before buying any Xiaomi gadget, study thematic forums and sites. Pay attention to possible problems when working outside of China.

We are doing fine with Xiaomi gadgets, the well-known forum is just overflowing huge amount instructions, localizations and additional hacks for every more or less worthy Chinese gadget.

Unfortunately, the camera I chose had another limitation, which I learned later: devices with a certain series of Mac addresses are blocked in some countries.

How Xiaomi locks devices

The reason for this blocking is unknown, sometimes Xiaomi is distinguished by such illogical actions. At first, the device is released with a full set of features, and then its functionality is programmatically cut.

The same thing happened with this IP-camera. Recently, after updating the firmware, the camera began to "ask to go home."

I was the least fortunate. The camera was automatically updated to firmware with a lock on the first launch.

Fortunately, blocking does not occur on the company's servers, but after updating the firmware and application to work with the device.

What can be done with the camera

In the vastness of the network, there are already instructions that allow you to work with this camera even after being locked.

1. You can do nothing at all, the device is perfectly configured in the local access point mode. The smartphone connects directly to the camera and displays the image without any problems. Unfortunately, at the same time on the iPhone it is impossible to use home Wi-Fi and it turns exclusively into a screen for an IP camera.

2. It is possible to downgrade the firmware version on the camera (only 10 simple steps, manipulating the memory card and a couple of applications on the computer) and install not the latest version of the utility to work with the device.

As you understand, it is possible to downgrade the firmware on the camera, but to install Mi Home old version is only possible on an Android smartphone or iPhone with a jailbreak.

3. You can try to untie the camera for use in any country. This is done completely free of charge, the unlocking instructions are contained right in the application:

I decided to unlock the camera so as not to bother with flashing and downgrading. At the time of this process, I used a direct connection to the camera to work with it.

Xiaomi will happily unlock the camera for international use if you provide them with:

• photo of the barcode from the box of the device;
• a snapshot of a sticker from the gadget itself with service information;
• confirmation of the purchase of this camera.

There were no problems on the first two points, but I had to suffer with the last one.

First, I took two necessary photos and attached a screenshot of the completed deal on AliExpress to them. I sent a letter with the specified subject to the address of the support service. Answered the next day:

They asked to contact the seller and take the order invoice from the official supplier. As an example, they named MI.com, JD.com and MI Tmall.

I several times asked to provide an invoice to the seller through the form feedback on AliExpress. The answer is silence.

There was no such quick response as last time, and the camera continued to swear at blocking. Meanwhile, the dispute on AliExpress escalated and I demanded compensation from the seller for the cost of the camera. He only agreed when sending the device back.

I didn't want to do this, because in that case I would have to pay the cost of the return postage and wait a few more months for a response and money.

Hands are not for boredom

While I was waiting for a response from Xiaomi support and a solution to the dispute on AliExpress, I decided to get confused with downgrading the camera firmware. For this I even got hold of an Android smartphone.

Just a couple of hours to experiment and in the end I got a fully functional application + camera bundle. The program and firmware were not the latest version (it was necessary to solve the problem), but with full Russification, this is Android.

I will say right away that not everyone wants to bother with downgrading the firmware. And he himself got dubious pleasure. On the one hand, I felt a pleasant nostalgia for the good old days, when it was necessary to reflash smartphones, routers, etc. an infinite number of times, and on the other hand, it was a pity for the time spent on the procedure.

How did it all work out

They meet, as you know, by the clothes and clothes of our hero - usual for Xiaomi devices and their henchmen - thick white cardboard and a minimum of printing in gray tones.

Behind, also typically short specifications, in this case, well, very brief - the output parameters of the power supply are indicated - 5V 2A and the maximum power of the camera - 2 W. From the icons on the ends of the box, you can glean some more information - work in Wi-Fi 2.4 + 5 GHz, a viewing angle of 130 degrees, 20 frames per second in daytime and 15 frames per second in night mode.

The camera is packed perfectly, which is also typical for Xiaomi, they did not spare cardboard, various inserts - holders that will ensure that you receive a safe and sound product.

The delivery set includes a camera with a foot holder and a power supply unit with a flat double plug and a cable about two meters long. Unlike many other kits, the cable and power supply are one piece.

The camera itself is a black round "pill", everything else is a holder consisting of a round stand and a horizontal bar with a hole for the camera, connected by a hinge that allows you to change the angle of inclination.

At the end of the "tablet" there is a micro USB power connector and a slot for a micro SD memory card. There is also a microphone. Back - Speaker - The camera provides two-way voice communication.

Software part

For work, we need everything, too, the Mi Home application - which independently detects a new device, connects it to the Wi-Fi network using a QR code, then a short installation process and everything is ready.

The first launch of the camera plug-in is accompanied by tips on the main points - an example - it is shown how to use two fingers to zoom in on the image.

In the main window of the plug-in, from top left to right - the current speed of the connection with the camera, pause the online broadcast, select the image quality - HD, Auto, Low, then turn on / off the sound, display the image from the camera in a small window on the desktop, on top of other windows , and the inclusion of a picture in full screen.

At the bottom there is a screenshot, video recording, turning on the microphone for voice communication, switching to sleep mode and, on the second tab, a list of recorded videos.

In the upper right corner there is a round button with ... - these are camera settings.

Basic settings menu - allows you to change the camera name, set an access password, share the camera - for example, another Mi account, check which group it belongs to, the firmware version, unlink the device from the system, add a shortcut to the desktop and get network information.

In the Sleep menu - you can adjust the time automatic shutdown and turn on the camera.

Further down the menu - Status Light - turn off the blue status LED, which is useful since it shines quite brightly, which cannot but annoy, Watermark - the date and time on the image, but the time zone is Chinese, correcting wide-angle lens distortion and turning off automatic playback video with disabled wi-fi.

From the software image settings, it is still possible to enable the advanced mode dynamic range- the contrast between areas with different illumination is smoothed, the color is better developed, when the camera is installed with a rotation, the image can be rotated by 90, 180 and 270 degrees.

In the motion detection section, you can configure the sensitivity of motion detection for 32 areas - from disabling detection, to detecting even a slight movement.

The camera can save image and video to a memory card or network storage with SMB support - it can be a NAS or network folder... After inserting a memory card, which by the way can be inserted "on the go" - information about its status and free space appears in the camera menu, and you can also format the card there.

After inserting a memory card, a TimeLine appears under the image from the camera - on which the recorded fragments will be highlighted in orange areas. What's interesting is that here the time is displayed in your time zone.

The option Record and save alarm ... (see the screen above) - enables automatic recording upon motion detection (according to the sensitivity scale you configured). When motion is detected, the camera records a 1 minute video clip, which, in addition to the timeline, can be viewed in the Manage Files menu. Here the records are grouped by day and hour - the hours at which any records were made are highlighted. By clicking on the cell of the desired hour - we get to the list of videos with the minutes. In this menu, they can be deleted, kept or protected from deletion. By clicking on the video, you can view it (including remotely)

SD card data

On the memory card, the camera creates a Mijia Record Video folder that contains directories named like XXXXYYZZWW - where XXXX is the year, YY is the month, ZZ is the day, WW is the hour (Chinese time)

Each folder contains thumbnails of each video in the form of jpg images and the videos themselves - starting with the minute and second of the beginning of the recording.

Each minute video takes about 8 MB of space, has a resolution of 1920 by 1080 and 20 frames per second in day mode and 15 in night mode.
