Standard connection and web interface.

The fast 2804 MTS universal router is available in two different versions, V2 and V3. These two devices differ in the shape of the case, and maybe also in the inner filling, but they are configured in exactly the same way. That is, they have a proprietary MTS web interface that allows you to set up a connection to a given provider. We, in turn, will consider only one question: how to set up an Internet connection if the provider uses Ethernet, not ADSL.

Each of the considered devices is equipped with standard set LAN ports. But the MTS firmware has a "tricky" property: the LAN ports are the first and second connectors (eth0 and eth1). It is assumed that the other two connectors will be used for an IPTV set-top box and for an IP phone. You can get rid of all these "bells and whistles" if you go to the "Grouping Interfaces" tab and click "Delete", after selecting all unnecessary checkboxes.

Although, you can not delete anything, but in any case, before setting up, the computer is connected to the second LAN connector. The first connector will further be designated as the "WAN" port.

Standard connection and web interface

The device in question comes with a patch cord. It should connect the computer port and the second LAN connector on the router. You can immediately connect the provider's cable to the first LAN connector. Having set on the computer "automatic" obtaining DNS and IP, send it to reboot. And the power of the router is turned on at the final stage.

Wait one minute (the embedded OS should boot completely). Then, with your browser open, navigate to the following address: 192.168.1.1. After passing the identification with the username admin and password mts, you will see the start tab of the interface:

The first page of the web interface

All the parameters that we will change are located in the group of tabs "Additional settings". Actually, we can only configure the "IPoE" protocol (other protocols are not supported).

Configuring an IPoE Internet Connection

How simple it looks if you read the title: take it and set it up. In fact, it will be necessary to remove everything that was installed by default. For example, the "MTS" provider configures an ADSL connection (PPPoE), and at the same time - two interfaces for IPTV. We will remove them all. How exactly is discussed further.

Removing unnecessary Internet connections

First of all, we recommend doing as it was discussed at the beginning of the review (go to the "Grouping Interfaces", etc.). This gives you two more free Ethernet ports. We will be configuring the eth0 port, but first, we need to get rid of those connections that have already been created. Go to the "WAN service" tab:

"Additional settings" -> "WAN service"

Here, tick off each line, and then, you need to click "Delete".

A similar action is performed on another tab. It is called the ATM PVC Interface and is available under the Layer 2 Interface group. Don't worry - everything on it is responsible for the ADSL connection. On last step go to the third tab, also located in the "2nd level interface" group.

Its name is "ETH-interface":

ETH interface, Ethernet ports

All lines here need to be deleted.

WAN setup, two levels

Remaining on the "ETH-interface" page, you will see a drop-down list with the slot number, as well as a mode selector:

"ETH interface", ports removed

For example, we will select the first port (eth0), and the selector is always set to "VLAN / MUX". At the last step, click "Apply / Save". Now, you can proceed to configuring the TPC / IP layer (the Ethernet layer is already configured).

So, you need to open the "WAN service" tab. The button "Add" is pressed on it. Then, the sequence of actions will be as follows:

  1. In the drop-down list, select the value "eth0 / eth0", click "Next";
  2. The selector is set to "IP over Ethernet", click "Next";
  3. We select the mode of obtaining the IP-address (manually or automatically), do not turn on the "options";
  4. We must enable NAT and Firewall, and also IGMP if we want to watch IPTV;
  5. The left column should contain "Eth0_1" (use the "arrows");
  6. Select the source of the DNS address (similar to the fifth point);
  7. Click "Apply / Save".

The list is explained in the figure.

Setting WAN Port Parameters

Note that to watch IPTV, you need to correctly configure the "LAN": go to the "LAN" page, enable two options "IGMP" and the blocking mode.

Configuring LAN for IPTV

Please note that among " Additional Settings»There are two important tabs not covered here.

This is, first of all, the "UPnP" tab, where the protocol of the same name is used (it is necessary for Skype, ICQ, uTorrent to work). And also, as you noticed, there is a "Multicast" tab. She is responsible for IPTV, but since we have already configured everything, you don't have to go to it.

Enabling and securing Wi-Fi

Announced as "Uninterrupted Internet Access", but I would emphasize the word "universal". It is quite suitable for the office, however, it will fit well at home. And in many cases - more than just right, as it will allow you to abandon the "extra" devices.

Lyrics and positioning

Recently, somewhere I read either a quote or a joke: “I am sitting here, all entangled in the wires from these wireless devices". Very vital observation, expansion of the "nomenclature" of wireless technologies and strives to add to the farm extra wires and devices. There was a simple mouse with a tail - it became wireless without a tail. But “in revenge” for my wirelessness I brought in a glass with a transceiver and a charger, a power cord and an adapter. We got rid of the cord between the handset and the device - instead we got a power cord and a power supply for the load. But this is so, by the way I had to. Properly used and organized, wireless technologies really make life easier and more comfortable, allowing you to collect all the wires-cables in one pile and shove them out of sight somewhere in the corner.

A WiFi Router greatly contributes to solving the problem of getting rid of at least some of the wires underfoot, taking the Internet from one source and distributing it to all consumers. There are more and more of them every day: these are not only laptops, but also all sorts of tablets, netbooks, iPads, etc. Smartphones too WiFi network do not hesitate, including for voice calls. Comfortable. However, now routers are beginning to multiply right before our eyes: an “egg” from Yota, a 3G “egg” from Huawei, an “egg” from Skylink, and so on, Faberge would envy.

The Fast 2804 router is planned as a universal node device capable of “collecting the Internet” from different sources and then distributing it via WiFi and LAN / WAN to different consumers. This "two-sided versatility" is seen as the main competitive advantage of this product. The device can be connected to the Internet from a traditional mains socket, ADSL from a telephone socket (the router has a built-in ADSL modem), from a WiMax or 3G / EDGE / GPRS modem (USB-connector for a modem). At the output of the router is the Internet via WiFi and Ethernet cable, as well as a cable signal for STB (Set Top Box) Stream TV.

Appearance and equipment

In addition to the router itself, the box contains a short brochure for operating and connecting instructions, a disc with a detailed description, a power supply, a set of connecting cables and a splitter, which we need to connect the phone to a telephone socket along with a router. There are no WiMax and / or 3G / EDGE / GPRS modems in the bundle, and rightly so: many have USB whistles, and there is no need to force people to pay for an extra device.

The size of the router is not at all pleasing, for home use the device is clearly bulky. It must be assumed that the "culprit" is the antenna built into the case, after all, it was not for the sake of five LEDs that the case was made larger than a netbook? The brochure describing the connection is incomplete and in some places incorrect, you see, they were in a hurry to have time to “fill the box” for the exhibition. Those who, upon purchase, accidentally get the first version of the instructions, can download the corrected and supplemented version from our website.

The panel with sockets, including the one with a USB-socket for a modem, turned out to be skewed not very well. A very compact 3G modem Huawei E1550 was issued for testing, but even it prevents the router from "getting on its feet." Or the modem itself stands up in the slot slightly wobbly, which is not entirely correct. But it is not critical, since for reasons of signal reception quality, the modem should be used together with an extension cable.

Working hours

The assumed basic mode of operation is to provide guaranteed WiFi Internet for the office or home. In case of problems with the main network access channel, the router automatically starts the 3G modem and establishes a connection through it, for the end user it looks like a temporary disappearance of Internet access for 40-50 seconds. In the process of working through the modem, the router constantly monitors the state of the main channel and, when it is restored, automatically switches to it, breaking the modem connection.

The status and performance of the connections can be monitored visually, the very five LEDs on the front panel are intended for this. The mode of "emergency" automatic switching to a modem connection and back is disabled by default; to activate it, you will have to look at the router management menu via the Web interface.

Reservation of the main channel using a WiMax modem works in a similar way. Rather, as it turned out, it will work, since WiMax functionality is not yet provided in the current firmware of the router. Generally speaking, you need to warn about such features in advance, otherwise people wasted their time getting me an account in Comstar-WiMax. By the way, Comstar initially positioned its WiMax network as an additional, not the main channel of access to the Internet; tariff plans are also "sharpened" for this mode of operation.

Nevertheless, I can very well imagine a person using WiMax as the main channel for accessing the network. And in this case, it will no longer be possible to make a backup using a 3G modem, there is only one USB socket on the panel.

The Plug That Doesn't Play

When connecting for a while, you will have to tinker with the router in any case, "plug-and-play" will not work. Local network Through the cable, the router "hooked" immediately and the WiFi hotspot also turned on automatically, but access via WiFi is by default closed with a password. Probably, this is the right decision, there is no need to distribute your "blood" Internet to all neighbors.

All the necessary data are carefully given on the plate, it is convenient.

It is not very convenient that the data does not correspond to reality, and you still have to get the desired password through the Web interface, connecting to the router with a cable. Although, perhaps, I misunderstood something, and by WPA: 00AB47 I do not mean a password, I am something else. It doesn't matter, one way or another, you need to go into the guts of the router for a password.

And it is right that they are forced to climb, at the same time we will enable the automatic backup mode via a modem, which is disabled by default. We will also configure the ADSL connection parameters and the 3G modem connection profile. You can complain that the dial-up number, username / password and APN could have been flashed in advance, but you can survive somehow. And the initially empty settings fields hint that the router does not have to be used with the modem of a certain operator. Despite the harsh warnings about the compatibility of the router only with certain models of MTS modems, this "experimental specimen" worked wonderfully with an "outside" USB-modem.

However, it must be borne in mind that software the router is under active development and improvement, so that undocumented features can be considered a temporary phenomenon.

Summary

In general, the feelings from the device are very positive. Probably, we can safely recommend it to someone who is going to connect to the Internet via ADSL access. In other cases, you need to proceed from your needs and the objective need to reserve the Internet. However, the versatility of the router captivates, it cannot be taken away from it. Unfortunately, the price of the device is still unknown, but those who are going to organize a WiFi space for themselves should keep this option in mind.
