Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 - combining business with pleasure. Ports and communications

In 2017, Lenovo introduced its new Legion brand with the first gaming laptops Y520, Y720 and Y920. People liked laptops under this brand for a reasonable price, good performance, interesting design, convenient input devices. In the summer of 2018, an updated lineup was released, which included the Y530 model on the new 8th generation Intel Core processor. Today we take a closer look at this successor, featuring a discreet monochrome design with an emphasis on performance, ergonomics and functionality.

Design

The Lenovo Legion Y530 stands out from many other RGB backlit laptops with oversized design elements. It is designed in a minimalistic style and is black with cool white backlighting. The Spartan lid has the Legion logo imprinted on the left, with a small illuminated Y-logo in the letter 'O'. The lid itself is now completely flat with no corners and is laced with a subtle spiral pattern. By the way, it opens up about 180 degrees. One of the Y530's best innovations is the narrow 8mm display bezels, which you rarely see on budget gaming laptops. And a webcam was placed on the bottom frame. The power button is located on the keyboard in front of the Y530's sturdy hinge. The laptop weighs 2.3 kg, which is slightly higher than the entire competitor, but its thin bezels and size make it quite compact. There are a lot of various ports on the sides, we'll take a closer look at them later. In general, the laptop looks strictly, businesslike, it will look in the theme both at home and in the office.

Graphics and testing

The Lenovo Legion Y530 is equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card. These video cards successfully pull games of recent years at high settings, and in especially demanding games in FHD resolution, you will have to play at medium settings. But VR games are clearly not for him, the video card is simply weak for them. Testing games with a GTX 1050 Ti graphics card and an Intel Core i5-8300H processor gave the following results:

The scores of 6809 in 3DMark Fire Strike and 22978 in Cloud Gate are quite reasonable and suggest that we have a laptop that can easily handle most games at medium (and some high) settings. It's worth noting that these scores are almost identical to those of last year's Y520.

The Intel Core i5-8300H in our Y530 is a 45W quad-core processor. The performance is excellent, although clearly lower than six-core processors such as the Intel Core i7-8750H (which is available in some modifications for the Y530) and the Core i9-8950HK. The processor frequency ranges from 2.3 GHz to 4 GHz (3.9 GHz with 4 active cores) and is supported by Hyper-Threading technology. Our processor in the Y530 scores slightly above average for this CPU. 818 points in Cinebench R15 multi-process is a very good result (versus the i5-8300H processor average of 788 points), and a score of 171 in one CPU is exactly what we expect to see. Sustained performance was also not an issue in Cinebench's looping tests: the scores only dropped from 829 to 804 in the seventh run, after which they returned to the 815-817 range, which is still above the average for this processor.

Display

The 15.6-inch display on the Lenovo Legion Y530 laptop has a matte surface with FHD resolution. The screen does not shine with brightness, as on the previous model, there are problems with this. True, there are modifications of the model with increased brightness up to 300 cd /, where it is really better. The average measured brightness of the Y530 display reached 266 cd / m2, which is only 20 cd / m2 brighter than the Y520 panel last year. The Y530's screen covers 87% of the sRGB color gamut, which is a good result.

Audio

The two Harman speakers located on the bottom of the Legion Y530 deliver quite decent sound with moderate linearity, balanced highs and mids, but weak bass. Slight distortion may be noticeable at maximum volume. The overall sound is good and should be sufficient for most purposes. Headphones can always help out.

Noise

Lenovo Legion Y530 is silent in standby mode. Under load, the average performance is also not high - 34.9 dB, which is 6.9 dB higher than the ambient level. At maximum load, a noise level of 49.6 dB was recorded when both fans were operating at their maximum speed.

Ports

This laptop has a good supply of ports. They are not on the front panel, but on the back there are 7 at once: USB Type-C Gen 1, mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, charging port, blocking port. On the right side there is USB 3.0, and an audio jack, and on the left, there is one USB 3.0. Card readers are completely absent.

Cooling and temperature

The larger war fans on the Lenovo Legion Y530 provide more efficient cooling than the fans on the previous model. A large grille that spans nearly half of the laptop's bottom, coupled with spacious vents installed in the corner, also allows for unobstructed airflow. The laptop stays cooler under load than most competitors. Under load averaged 31.9 ° C / 35.9 ° C top / bottom (ambient: 22 ° C) with 42.8 ° C / 52 ° C hotspots in the center underside of the notebook.

Battery life

The 52.5 Wh battery provides approximately 4 hours and 5 minutes of web surfing. This is a poor result when compared to other similar notebooks. Time autonomous work is of minimal importance on a gaming laptop; 4 hours should be enough to move around the house from room to room or to reach the charger.

Software and warranty

Lenovo Legion Y530 comes either without an operating system or with Windows 10. Accordingly, the Windows version comes with preinstalled games. Lenovo installs its Vantage program, which allows you to get information on the video card, processor, random access memory and storage. It is also possible to manually control the fans. The laptop comes with a 1 year warranty.

Conclusion

The Lenovo Legion Y530 is a great starting point for users looking for an entry-level high-end gaming laptop. The developers have moved away from brightly colored accents towards more professional black and white colors. Despite the fact that the Y530 is equipped with an inexpensive GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card and a simple quad-core processor, its performance is unusually stable, and the temperature along with the noise level is within comfortable limits. Thus this model can easily handle most games at medium to high settings. The disadvantages include the display - it does not give a real advantage over the previous model Y520, adding a little brightness, but reduced contrast with washed out colors.

Lenovo ThinkPad E530 is another workhorse, the cost of which starts from the $ 500 mark. Of course, for the money mentioned, you will only get a low-end configuration with budget Intel Celeron B830 and integrated graphics. But there are also more expensive modifications that are equipped with more powerful processors and discrete video adapters.

One of the advanced configurations came to us for testing: with Intel Core i3-3110M and NVIDIA GeForce GT630M. This should be enough not only for working with office documentation, but also for launching many games - of course, not with the maximum quality settings, but also with not the most minimal ones.

⇡ Appearance and usability

The dominance of ultra-thin laptops, which, according to analysts, will dominate the market in a couple of years, has led to the fact that even a fairly thin laptop of a classic design seems overweight. However, inexpensive laptop it is quite possible to forgive. Moreover, the thickness of the case does not exceed 31 millimeters, and the weight is only 2.45 kilograms - this is pretty good for a model with a display diagonal of 15.6 inches. In this form factor, there are also more compact solutions, for example Acer Aspire M3 or Sony VAIO S15, but such models are still more expensive - at times, if we talk about Sony.

As with all models with this hinge design, the opening angle of the lid is limited to approximately 135 degrees.

There are no complaints about the build quality - although this is not a "real ThinkPad", but an initially inexpensive ThinkPad Edge, it is noticeable that Lenovo is trying not to compromise the famous brand inherited from IBM. We have dealt with an introductory sample, but it was produced on the same line as commercial notebooks.

The details fit well, but it feels like the body lacks rigidity: even with a little effort, it flexes noticeably, actively crackling in the process. This inevitably stems from the desire to reduce the weight of the device while saving on materials. After all, the only option is to make the plastic panels thinner.

The surfaces of the working area and the lid frame are a pleasant-looking black rough plastic. The lid remotely resembles soft touch to the touch and collects fingerprints quite actively. However, the soiling is not as high as that of the “leaders of the hit parade” - glossy plastic and smooth dark-colored aluminum.

The island-type keyboard is supplemented with a block number keys... The panel, into which the keys are inscribed, has a glossy surface, so it gets dirty easily, and it is not very convenient to wipe the cells between the buttons. The shape of the keys is traditional for the ThinkPad Edge line - in fact, this design migrated to the IdeaPad line a little earlier, and has now occupied the "real ThinkPads".

The base of the keyboard is well secured, but under strong pressure on one of the central keys, it bends slightly. The key travel - from a subjective point of view - is too soft, but the moment of actuation is felt well, so you don't have to “nail down” the keys for greater confidence to the stop. It is good news that the buttons work very quietly.

Like other models in the ThinkPad series, the Edge E530 is equipped with two manipulators - a TrackPoint strain gauge joystick with three dedicated buttons and a fairly spacious "buttonless" touchpad with a sensitive area of 92x66 mm. Traditionally, the trackpoint keys have quite impressive and very soft travel, but the travel of the lower corners of the panel is quite hard.

The front of the case houses a pair of speakers as well as a memory card reader.

The battery occupies most of the surface of the rear edge. There is also an auxiliary "exhaust" for the cooling system. The folded back cover partially overlaps the slots, which somewhat reduces its usefulness.

The main cooling outlet is on the left side. In addition to it, there are three USB 3.0 ports and both video outputs - VGA and HDMI. Thus, most of the connectors to which the wires will be connected are on the left, and the connecting cables will not get in the way of your hands. Unless, of course, you are left-handed.

Most of the right side of the case is occupied by an optical drive. It also houses a wired network connector, a combined audio connector and USB port 2.0.

The underside of the laptop is flat and the ventilation holes are plentiful. The body rests on four rubber feet. The area of the contact patch is large enough, and most importantly, the legs cling tenaciously to any tabletop.

When IBM was bought by the Chinese manufacturer Lenovo, it had only two lines: ThinkPad and IdeaPad. In 2009, the ThinkPad Edge series of notebooks began production, combining the power of business devices with the style of ThinkPad and the affordable cost of the IdeaPad. Notebooks of the ThinkPad Edge line are suitable not only for small businesses, but also for home users. Such models have a little strict design, but at the same time, they are comfortable devices with good performance. The hero of this Lenovo review The ThinkPad Edge E530 is a business laptop in the full sense of the word. It is equipped not only with a convenient touchpad and keyboard, but also with a trackpoint. In addition, the laptop has a fingerprint scanner and is made in a rather interesting design that will appeal to anyone who, in one way or another, is related to business life.

Contents of delivery

The laptop came to us for testing in a dense cardboard box. Inside, we saw the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 itself, the battery and the power supply. The package included a brief instruction with introductory information, which additionally included a list of phone numbers of technical support centers in different countries. There is also an electronic user manual on the laptop hard drive.

Design

Not many laptops have a case, the lid of which is made of soft-touch plastic, pleasant to the touch. The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 is exactly that. At the same time, there is nothing superfluous in the design: the lid is decorated with a small chrome-plated Lenovo logo located in the lower left corner, and a silver ThinkPad insert, where a red LED above the i is lit, which is also the indicator of the laptop.

In general, both from an aesthetic point of view and in terms of functionality, the design looks great, because the combination of black, silver and red looks very attractive in itself.

The laptop case has a smooth shape with rounded edges and a beautiful "steel" frame around the lid, while the thickness of the panels only slightly narrows towards the front edge. By the way, the dimensions of the Edge E530 are 375x245x28-34 mm, and the laptop weighs 2.5 kg, so it can be used both for daily trips and for work in the office or at home.

Unlike the top panel of the laptop, the bottom is made of rough plastic. On it you can see two sliders for removing the battery and several compartments where ventilation holes are located on the largest. The memory modules and the hard drive are also hidden here. There are also four rubber feet on the bottom.

The base and lid of the laptop are connected by two sturdy metal hinges. The firm hold prevents the ThinkPad Edge E530 from opening with one hand, but the display does not wobble at all. The maximum opening angle of the notebook is 135 degrees.

Let's see what the inside looks like. It uses the same rough plastic as on the bottom. It is quite tough, and even significant pressure does not deform the inner surface. Despite the fact that there is no soft touch here, the wrist rest is comfortable for the hands.

On working panel only the power button, the substrate and the webcam area stand out due to the gloss, which fits perfectly into the overall design.

Of course, the ThinkPad brand logo is not forgotten, similar to what you can see on the lid. The only difference is that below this insert, the inscription Edge is added, the letters of which are pressed into the palm rest. In general, the design of the laptop is more austere and inviting to work than frivolous.

Display, sound, webcam

The ThinkPad Edge E530 has a 15.6-inch matte TN display with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels. The screen has a brightness level of 220-nits and a fairly high contrast ratio of 400: 1. It is good for both indoor and outdoor use thanks to its matte display and good performance. In general, compared to other business notebooks with lower contrast, the screen in the E530 looks very decent.

The viewing angles of this notebook are good. The picture is normal from a horizontal and vertical position, color distortions and changes in brightness are almost invisible. But, of course, this laptop is more tailored for individual use.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 has two speakers. They are located on the bevel of the front edge under the long grille. The convenient location avoids loudness losses. The predominance of high and middle frequencies is compensated by the clarity of the sound, and the absence of distortion, even at the highest volume.

On the display frame is the lens of the built-in webcam with a resolution of 1 megapixel. On either side of it, you can see two microphones, which, if desired, can be turned off with a key.

Using the camera, you can chat on Skype, as well as take pictures. Below you can see an example of such a photo.

Keyboard and touchpad

As for a 15.6-inch laptop, the island keyboard in the ThinkPad Edge is quite large, which has a positive effect on the size of the buttons. It is interesting that their real size is 15x15 mm, but visually they seem to be larger than, for example, the buttons on the Samsung RV 518 of the same size.

The keys have a long stroke, and in shape (except for the "arrows" and the upper functional row) they are similar to those in the IdeaPad, ie. rounded at the bottom and concave, which means they are also very comfortable for the fingers. Each button has a rough surface with white markings. The keyboard is complemented by a separate numeric keypad with full-size keys.

It was also decided not to save on the size of the arrow block, so these keys were reduced quite insignificantly. There is no LED key backlight in this laptop, but it has a waterproof surface.

The keyboard layout is non-standard. The first thing that catches your eye is the button located in the lower left corner, not. By the way, by default they are pressed with. An equally interesting solution for placing on the right between and.

In the center of the keyboard is the Lenovo UltraNav trackpoint. It is located between the [G], [B] and [H] buttons and draws attention to its bright red color. In operation, the mini-joystick is very responsive, a small touch to its surface is enough, and the cursor easily moves across the entire display area. In addition, the rubberized trackpoint pad is pleasant to the touch, allowing for easy positioning. In the settings, you can choose a suitable sensitivity, assign a scrolling function, and switch to working with a magnifying glass for scaling (from a single magnification to eight times). Additionally, you can set the size of the magnifier (small, medium, large or custom). By the way, the trackpoint in Edge E530 is supplemented with three buttons, two large functional ones replace the right and left mouse buttons, and the one in the middle is used instead of the scroll wheel. All of them are pressed softly and quietly.

The touchpad keys are not separately highlighted. They are hidden under the common area, but their presence is evidenced by a thin strip dividing the boundaries of the touch zone and buttons. The keys have a short stroke, are easy to press, with a quiet click. The only thing is that the area allotted for them is too small, so you have to get used to hitting the buttons exactly. By the way, the touch pad itself is of medium size and has a fine-point texture. This is sufficient for normal cursor control; besides, the fingers do not stick, which ensures optimal speed movement of the pointer. Using multitouch gestures, you can flip through images with three or four fingers, zoom in or out with two fingers, and rotate.

To the right of the touchpad is the fingerprint sensor. It is designed for secure storage of data so that an outsider cannot use confidential information by logging into the laptop system. In business devices, the presence of such a sensor is especially important.

Performance

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 comes preinstalled with 64-bit operating system Windows 8, which gave the laptop performance index the lowest score of 4.8 for integrated graphics. At the same time, the processor earned the highest score - 7.1, and the second place of honor was taken by graphics for games with 6.4 points.

The laptop is powered by a third generation Ivy Bridge processor - Intel Core i5-3210M with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz, and a third level cache of 3 MB. The chip with two computational cores is manufactured according to the norms of a 22-nanometer process technology, and thanks to Hyper-Threading technology, it simultaneously copes with four threads of instructions. Technology Turbo Boost allows you to overclock the processor up to 3.1 GHz.

Processor specifications and cache information can be seen in the screenshot of the CPU-Z application.

By the way, in our region there are quite a few complete sets with processors of the second and third generation. These include Intel Pentium, Intel Celeron, Core i3, and some other Core i5 models.

The processor is equipped with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 video card, built on a 22-nanometer process technology. It is suitable for office tasks, 4K video decoding and general computing operations. Also HD Graphics 4000 can output images to multiple external displays at the same time.

However, for high graphics performance, it is better to use a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M graphics card, which is also found in the ThinkPad Edge E530. Switching between video cards can be done either manually or automatically using NVIDIA Optimus technology. GPU The GT 635M has 2 GB of its own memory clocked at 785 MHz. By the way, both video cards support DirectX 11.

Let's immediately pay attention to the performance of the processor and video cards Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M in synthetic tests 3DMark06 and 3DMark 11. The overall result obtained in the 3DMark06 application with integrated graphics was 4643 points (in SM2.0 Score they got 1450 points, and in HDR / SM3.0 - 1976).

Of course, when testing with a discrete video card, we got higher scores - 8981 points. In evaluating the work of the shader unit SM2.0 and HDR / SM3.0, there were also changes - 3715 and 3458.

The same trend continued in the 3DMark 11 program - the results with the GeForce GT 635M were almost twice as high. NVIDIA graphics scored 1076 points.

We suggest using the graph to compare the results of 3DMark06 and 3DMark 11 with an integrated video card with other notebooks. The results of the first test were not very high compared to competitors. In the second, only a slight lag was noticeable.

On the contrary, with active discrete graphics in 3DMark06 we see a clear advantage of NVIDIA GT 635M in Edge E530 over NVS 5200M in ASUSPRO B53V and GeForce 610M in ASUS K55VD. By the way, in 3DMark 11 the GT 635M is second only to the Radeon HD 7730M in the Dell Inspiron 7520.

As for testing in Cinebench R11.5, the discrete video card showed a good result in OpenGL mode - 25.24 fps. At the same time, the processor received 2.84 pts. The screenshot can be seen below.

To compare the results of the processor and discrete graphics, we took the business model B53V, the budget notebook ASUS K55VD, and the Dell Inspiron 7520. The graph shows that the NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M bypassed the GeForce 610M in terms of frames per second and was only slightly inferior to the graphics of NVIDIA NVS 5200M and Radeon 7730M.

As for the RAM, one bar was installed in our laptop. Samsung memory M471B5273DH0-CK0 4GB. The second RAM slot is free. The memory has a DDR3 standard, a frequency of 1600 MHz. If you wish, you can independently equip your laptop with a large amount of RAM, for example 8 GB or 16 GB.

The ThinkPad Edge E530 uses a Western Digital WDC WD5000LPVT-08G33T1 hard drive connected via a SATA-II interface (data transfer up to 300MB / s). This 2.5-inch hard drive has a capacity of 500 GB and a spindle speed of 5400 rpm. The HDD buffer is 8 MB. The HD Tune Pro 5.00 benchmark examines drive specifications, transfer rates and access times. From the information received, it follows that the maximum speed of the hard disk is 120.2 MB / s, the minimum is 44.7 MB / s. These and other results are shown in the screenshot.

Based on the results of the speed of data reading, we built a graph. For comparison, all the same laptop models were taken. Compared to Seagate and WD hard drives in the Inspiron 7520 and ASUS K55VD, the maximum read speed of WD was high. As for the average, here all the speeds turned out to be practically equal.

You can also look at the results of the CrystalDiskMark benchmark. For example, when measuring the sequential read and write speed of the hard drive, we got 107.8 MB / s and 106.8 MB / s.

After that, the PCMark 7 program was launched, which comprehensively analyzed all system components... In this test, 2649 points were obtained, and the leader, the Computation test, stood out immediately. The 15,043 points obtained in it speak of good computing performance. For comparison: the second was the Creativity test (working with graphics) with a difference of more than 9500 points. The rest of the results did not exceed 2600 points.

For comparison, the graph shows the results of the Edge E530 and its competitors. It shows that the Lenovo laptop took an honorable second place, losing only 429 points to the ASUPRO B53V.

Games

In this section, of course, we will not talk about the performance in games of the integrated HD Graphics 4000 video card, although it can easily cope with simple toys. Let's see how the discrete graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M behaves in games. For testing, we installed the first-person shooter Battlefield 3 and the sports simulator FIFA 13 on a laptop.

Battlefield 3 was set to medium graphics settings and a native resolution of 1366x768 pixels. At the same time, the game ran with 27-33 frames per second, and the process itself was smooth, without braking. In FIFA 13 we kept the same resolution and were able to play normally at maximum settings with an average of 30 fps.

Ports and communications

All ports of the ThinkPad Edge E530 are located on the side edges. On the back of the case, you can only see the battery and a small ventilation grill, while in front is a 4-in-1 card reader.

On the right side of the laptop, there is a USB 2.0 port. Supported by the Always On USB function, this interface can charge devices such as a tablet or mobile phone even when the laptop is turned off. Also on the right is an RJ-45 network jack and a built-in DVD burner from PLDS (Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions). At the very edge is a combined audio jack for connecting headphones and a microphone.

By the way, there is a small square hole with a screw on the bottom. By unscrewing it, you can easily remove the optical drive from the case.
The Broadcom BCM4313GN 802/11 b / g / n Wi-Fi module is located behind a small compartment on the bottom. The package also provides Bluetooth 4.0.

Heat and noise

Based on the filling of the laptop, we can assume that it will not get too hot even under maximum load, but let's see what the measurement results show.

We launched the HW Monitor software, which detected the heating of the internal components. The screenshot shows that during the stress test (Furmark for the video card and the AIDA64 stress test for the processor), the CPU warmed up to 73 degrees Celsius, and the temperature of the hard drive remained stable (32 ° C-39 ° C).

As for the heating of the laptop case, in idle time, the warmest place turned out to be the center of the bottom, where the temperature did not exceed 34.1 degrees Celsius, and the average heating of the working surface was a cool 25 ° C.

And only some parts of the case got very hot under load. It is especially pleasant that the palm rest during the FurMark launch and the AIDA stress test remained cool - 22-23 degrees Celsius. Along with this, the center of the keyboard and the top of the case were hotter with an average temperature of 39 ° C.

As for the noise, in idle time it is 42.3 dB. Of course, under load, the ThinkPad Edge E530 will be audible, as the figures increase to 50.1 dB. If you look at the graph plotted against the noise level, you can see that in idle E530 keeps up with two notebooks from ASUS. But under load it "makes noise" a little more intensely.

Battery

The laptop has a 6-cell SANYO 45N1043 lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 4100 mAh (48 Wh).

Battery testing by Battery Eater has shown that the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 has good battery life. So, in terms of power supply "Saving energy" in "Read's" mode ThinkPad Edge E530 worked for 4 hours and 15 minutes, and when switching to "High performance" the operating time in this mode decreased by no more than an hour, which is also not bad. Of course, the duration of work in the Classic will be more modest, although it will serve the same 1.4-1.5 hours. If you leave the device in idle mode, the battery will be discharged only after 7 hours and 17 minutes.

Now let's see how much energy this device consumes when connected to the network. As usual, we measured power consumption in three modes: idle, web surfing and under load. In the first and in the second, it turned out 16 W and 20 W, respectively, while when starting the stress test, the result was at the level of 76 W. The graph clearly shows that idle and web browsing results are lower than those of competitors.

Conclusion

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 laptop is a great option for work and play. The performance of this device is at a decent level. The filling includes two video cards, a third-generation processor, a capacious hard drive. The battery charge is enough for long trips, and the display pleases with juicy colors and good brightness. In this case, the laptop is equipped with various ports and an optical drive. Of the advantages, one cannot but ignore the laptop cover made of soft-touch plastic (nice and convenient), as well as input devices, standard set which is supplemented with a trackpoint. Separately, it is worth noting the presence of a fingerprint sensor, an important element of a laptop designed for business.

The ThinkPad Edge E530 is a safe bet for users looking for a reliable work companion. The $ 610 price tag for this configuration is reasonable. At the same time, it will not be superfluous to note that other configurations are available on the market in the price range from $ 450.

We are grateful to the Lenovo representative office in Ukraine for the laptop kindly provided for testing.

Lenovo has unveiled the next gaming laptop model to replace the highly popular Legion Y520. On this moment(early July 2018) the novelty has not yet appeared on sale, but it is already of interest. Therefore, I propose that you familiarize yourself with what can be expected from the Lenovo Legion Y530, a review-preview of this model, based on the information that can be found on the network, and I propose.

Description and characteristics

This model can be attributed to the class of inexpensive gaming laptops. This is evidenced not only by the use of video cards entry level, but also the dimensions of the device itself. The Y530 is light, thin, and has good battery life. Naturally, in comparison with classmates, and not with business ultrabooks and other pretentious models.

The laptop, as you would expect, has received an updated hardware. First of all, this concerns the transition to, and not "U" -versions are installed, which would be strange for a game model, but full-fledged "stones".

With regard to video cards, at first glance, there were no special changes, except that a modification with the GPU NVidia GeForce 1060, which was in its predecessor, was not announced. Yes, most likely, this video card will not be. But there is information that by the end of the year a version of Legion Y530 will be released with the latest GeForce 1160 chip of the new 11th generation, which is expected to appear in the next couple of months.

Appearance

The design of Legion laptops, including the new model, differs from what other manufacturers offer, and how their lines of devices stand out for fans of virtual battles. I can't say that I like the look of the Y530. Although not repulsive.

And the point here is not in the use of exclusively plastic in the finishing of the case (especially since there are no special complaints about it). Not very pleasing to the eye, the location of the screen is not on the rear edge, but the fact that it is slightly pushed into the body. Because of this, the closed lid forms a step and looks, in my opinion, somewhat foreign.

And in general, the side edges of the case on the side farthest from the user look somewhat heavy. However, this is a purely subjective opinion about the "taste of markers".

But what I like is the thin bezels around the screen. A "trick" that has made it to inexpensive laptops, which allows them to be perceived as more expensive. The small thickness of the frames not only on the sides, but also on the top, which is why the webcam is not in its usual place. It is now located at the bottom, so that all your interlocutors will look at you slightly from the bottom up.

And yet the laptop doesn't look cheap. The lid is corrugated, and although this is not carbon, but ordinary plastic, the corrugation gives charm, the logo (with backlight) is modestly placed on the side, and not in the middle, as is often the case.

Designers combined parallel-perpendicular back part with beveled edges of the front of the case. You may like the appearance or not, but the eye lingers on it.

Screen

Legion Y530 can be equipped with two models of screens, both IPS, but with different frequencies - 60 Hz and 144 Hz. A more advanced display uses the LG LP156WF9-SPK1 (LGD0563) matrix. The measurements showed a brightness of about 260 cd / m2, and a contrast ratio of 1000: 1, which is very worthy.

But the color gamut of this screen is not very good - only 55% sRGB, and this is a pretty average result. It is unlikely that the screen will be strong in subtle work with color. The response time is 25 ms, which is quite typical for such screens.

The good news is the complete lack of PWM for dimming. The eyes will fatigue less as there is no unpleasant flicker.

In general, the screen is quite good, and for an inexpensive laptop it is quite good, although it would be nice to "tighten" some of the characteristics.

Keyboard and touchpad

Many gaming laptops use a red (less often green) color in the keyboard backlight to emphasize the scope of a particular model. Probably, so that God forbid someone would not try to use such a laptop in the office. Or maybe the blood of "monsters", which in many have to be destroyed in many games, is less noticeable. A joke, of course.

Lenovo uses neutral white backlighting, which I personally like. Multicolor, so as not to break the hierarchy, is available only in the older model, Y730. And in general, the keyboard here remains the same as on its predecessor, because they are not looking for good, and any laptop made by Lenovo has no complaints about this element.

Noteworthy is the layout of the digital block, which is located higher than usual, which made it possible to use full-fledged cursor movement keys. A smart decision, which those who actively use these keys in games will agree with.

Storage devices

Nowadays it is difficult to find a more or less modern laptop that does not have solid state drives. Along with a regular hard drive, it is possible to use an SSD, and models with a PCIe interface are supported.

The Lenovo Legion Y530 often features an Intel 760p SSD, which is pretty good considering the drive's good performance. Disassembling the laptop is simple, just remove the bottom cover.

Will there be any other options - it will become clear after the start of sales.

Communication capabilities

Most of the ports are grouped at the back, which has become rare lately.

On the side faces you can find one USB 3.0 and a headphone jack.

Testing the capabilities of the video card yielded the following results:

Cooling system and noise

In addition to the encouraging (or not) test values, the cooling system's ability to cope with the hot temper of the components is also important. The problem lies in the fact that modern CPUs are able to significantly increase the frequency of operation under load. Naturally, this leads to heating, and it is far from always possible to keep the temperature within the required limits.

As a result, in order to prevent overheating, the processor begins to reduce the frequency, sometimes dropping to almost base values. This raises the question - why then do we need a top-end "stone" if it still does not work to get everything that it is capable of?

Fortunately, the Lenovo Legion Y530 is doing well with cooling. And the value of this CO is not that it allows you to prevent heating, in particular, of the processor to high temperatures (everyone can more or less cope with this), but to allow it, if possible, to expand to all its gigahertz, but they can boast of this Not everyone.

There are two fans with 70 blades each, three heat pipes are used, one common on the CPU and GPU, and one individual for each of these chips. Add here four ventilation grilles for exhausting heated air (two on the back and two on the sides). Interestingly, the fans on the bottom cover are also covered with a grill that facilitates air access.

The tests were carried out on a modification of a laptop with an older i7-8750H processor. Let me remind you that the base frequency of this 6-core 12-thread CPU is 2.2 GHz, and the maximum is 4.1 GHz. At full load, the values were recorded in the interval 2-10 sec, 15-30 sec and after 10 minutes of operation. The results are as follows:

Interval0:02 - 0:10 sec0:15 - 0:30 sec10:00 - 15:00 min
Lenovo Legion Y5303.24 GHz (94 ° C)3.20 GHz (94 ° C)2.97 GHz (94 ° C)
Acer Nitro 52.89 GHz (72 ° C)2.71 GHz (78 ° C)2.52 GHz (74 ° C)
ASUS TUF FX5042.59 GHz (71 ° C)2.64 GHz (82 ° C)2.46 GHz (74 ° C)
Alienware 15 R42.86 GHz (93 ° C)2.32 GHz (74 ° C)2.31 GHz (66 ° C)
ASUS ROG GL503GE2.89 GHz (66 ° C)2.89 GHz (69 ° C)2.53 GHz (71 ° C)

True, a few words must be said here. These results were obtained using a pre-production sample. As you can see, the temperature is really high, which can lead to reliability problems.

The manufacturer will either strive to reduce the temperature due to a lower processor frequency, or will allow high heating in the hope that a continuous operation under full load is still a rare occurrence for such equipment, and a short "run" to high frequencies and, accordingly, temperatures, it will not damage the laptop.

Nevertheless, according to the available reviews, which can be found on the net, when measuring the temperature of the processor under load, it reached almost 70 ° C, which is significantly less than in the tested pre-sale sample. Apparently, the maximum frequency of the CPU went under the knife.

Conclusion. Lenovo Legion Y530, a review of the successor, which can repeat the success of its predecessor

What do we end up with? Rather, we do not have it yet, but only expect it, because it is assumed that sales will begin in September. By the way, at the same time about the prices. On the American site, the most affordable model for ordering (with an i5-8300H, GTX 1050, 8 GB of memory, 128 GB PCIe SSD and a 60 Hz screen) is estimated at $ 750. We can find information that prices will start at $ 930.

Is it a lot or a little? If the 1050 Ti version is offered for this price, then this is not a bad option. Judge for yourself, the most affordable laptop(for example, Asus FX553VE) with such a video chip and a processor like i5 7300HQ costs about 52,000 rubles, i.e. about $ 900. Lenovo has more recent hardware.

The laptop itself is very interesting and, as far as can be judged, does not have any serious drawbacks. I would like less plastic and a slightly better screen, but still we are talking about an inexpensive gaming laptop, and it looks quite natural, otherwise the prices would be different.

The design is controversial, but not a failure either. A good cooling system, a good selection of ports and their location, all in a compact body with thin display bezels. There is a reason to take a closer look at the laptop when it goes on sale.
