Gaming laptop asus x 540. Review and testing of laptop ASUS X540SA

Autumn. The enthusiasm and agility of summer recede, yielding to the September bustle and October regularity. Bright and memorable night gatherings with noisy music give way to melancholic coffee or tea drinking, walks in parks dotted with yellow and red fallen leaves. Someone likes this, someone without much enthusiasm watches the inevitable approach of cold weather, and meanwhile everything goes on as usual with us: there are loud autumn releases ahead, manufacturers are preparing to offer and are already offering the newest, freshest and most advanced. We cannot deny ourselves and you the pleasure of examining in detail any themed laptop that reflects the season that has already come. Digging through the vast warehouses of NOTIC, I stumbled upon a fairly fresh and suitable laptop.

In the scenery of cozy evenings with a cup of hot coffee, the laptop takes center stage. Watch your favorite TV show while it is raining outside the window, read a fascinating book or just chat with friends in social networks- the laptop that I have chosen is "sharpened" for this. No gaming "bells and whistles", image solutions for lovers of leather office chairs and the like - just versatility, compactness and "tube" budget.

This new line of laptops ASUS X540 is a typical representative of the X-series from a popular Taiwanese manufacturer. For those who are not familiar with her, I will explain. The ASUS X line is a kind of bridge between budget general purpose notebooks and fashion ultrabooks. The devices of this line are not very expensive, rather thin and compact multimedia machines of the entry and middle level. In the case of the ASUS X540LJ, which costs about 32,000 rubles, we have a good performance 15-inch laptop weighing less than 2 kg, which will be ready to work without recharging a confident 3-4 hours at medium loads, and up to 5 hours at minimum. With a number of advantages such as a large and responsive clickpad and some features of the case, this laptop will look great both as a "stationary" computer and as a device of the "always with you" type.

Complete set ASUS X540LJ

A simple box with a black print does not excite imagination. Still, I like clamshell boxes with a pleasant "expensive" design and ergonomics, which ASUS often uses even for "popular" models. But not in this case. Inside the box, in addition to the laptop and the usual documentation, there is a very compact one-component charger that will even fit in your pocket - another fat plus in favor of the portability of the ASUS X540LJ. The battery itself is already installed in the laptop and is under back cover- you just can't get to her. The battery is slightly humped on the bottom, raising the laptop at a slight angle, which I personally liked when it came to testing the keyboard and typing.

Of course, for a complete immersion in the autumn mood, it is worth getting additional accessories. On the one hand, this laptop is a kind of “thing in itself”, and one cannot say that its owner desperately needs something specific. Is that comfortable and stylish laptop bag suitable color and style. Everything else that will create a mood for you - a cozy blanket, an interesting book, etc. - we in NOTIK will not be able to offer you, but I am sure you will cope with their selection on your own. :)

ASUS X540LJ design

As I promised, the laptop is very "autumnal": the slightly corrugated dark plastic of the top cover gives off a rich chocolate shade, and the work surface is dark golden, the color of fallen leaves. In general, the laptop looks just fine. A cleverly selected combination of colors and shades make it memorable, but without busting - it will perfectly suit absolutely any user and will look organically in any setting. The assembly is at a good level, there are no gaps and slots, everything is quite monolithic, only the top cover bends slightly under pressure. The rough plastic bottom is quite sturdy, with rubber feet for stability and a small hole in the cooling system.

The 15-inch glossy display is framed by a matte bezel with a built-in webcam and microphone. Photo quality and microphone sensitivity at a basic, let's say, level. The plastic from which the frame and other elements of the case are made is practical - it does not (at least not catch the eye) traces of exploitation, micro-scratches and fingerprints.

The gold-colored working surface does not contain anything superfluous, including additional buttons. Even the laptop power button is part of the keyboard. We have already seen such a solution, borrowed from the MacBook, many times. The island-style keyboard with perfectly spaced keys is exactly what we see all the time in the X-series. The buttons have an almost perfect (subjective) stroke with a clear response, they are pressed with a force of about 50 grams. There is a dedicated digital area, classic layout. Unfortunately, there is no keyboard backlighting.

Under the keyboard is a large, slightly shifted to the left, the most convenient clickpad. I mostly use an external mouse, but I've always liked the touchpads in the X series. And ASUS X540LJ is no exception, I gladly used it for quite long time... The clickpad supports Windows "gestures" like scrolling and zooming and responds well to them.

Ports and communications are located on the side faces and at the front. On the right side is optical drive DVD-RW discs and Kensington lock, on the left one is concentrated everything else - the socket charger, USB port Type-C, network RJ-45, VGA and HDMI video outputs, and huddled in the corner USB ports 3.0 and USB 2.0 and headset jack. There is a place for a card reader on the front of the notebook case. As a plus, I note the presence of a USB connector of the current Type-C format, a modern and up-to-date port. The downside is the location of the "classic" USB ports - they are located on the corner, in some sense making it difficult to connect some equipment with large connectors.

ASUS X540LJ is powered by a fourth-generation Intel Core i3 low-voltage processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 920M discrete graphics. A "very basic" configuration, frankly. While we are talking about office suite and desktop utilities, the laptop runs quite briskly. But demanding applications and some significant loads are beyond him. The same goes for games: you can run something classic on sane settings, but a low-voltage processor and a weak video card will not let you into the world of three-dimensional beauties.

4 GB random access memory look quite logical against the background of the overall picture. Expanding the amount of RAM is possible, but not necessary, especially if you adhere to the paradigm of pure utilitarianism of this laptop. 500 GB of hard disk space was also more than satisfied with me - this is the amount that I consider optimal for a laptop of this level. Solid state drive, of course, it would not hurt, you can even try to install it yourself, but this event will not come out cheap. As expected, the laptop also contains the necessary means of wireless communication - adapters Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi (802.11 b / g / n).

Screen

Display ASUS X540LJ - glossy, with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels. Despite the not very impressive characteristics, I liked the picture. In general, I love the displays used in ASUS laptops, and the X540LJ also demonstrates a bright juicy and contrasting image. Viewing angles, unfortunately, suffer a lot. What's vertical, what's horizontal. Horizontally - especially. The image is very distorted to a completely uncomfortable level even with a slight deviation of the display, it is better to watch a movie with friends on a large external monitor or TV.

Sound

Audio technology SonicMaster did not disappoint - although the sound and not the level of purely multimedia home laptops, but for a lightweight universal laptop - what you need. A good headroom and flexible settings through the built-in utility make it easy to adapt the sound to any environment without the need to use headphones.

Outcomes

Although the ASUS X540LJ lacks stars from the sky, it makes a very pleasant impression. This is a beautiful, high-quality, versatile laptop with comfortable keyboard and a touchpad, a nice display and good sound, offered for a very reasonable price. Yes, the configuration will not allow playing games and working in demanding applications, but this is not required from a device of this kind.

Asus x540s - budget laptop from a well-known brand, which, alas, showed itself not from the best side. The configuration of this device is rather modest, or more precisely, a 4-core 1600 MHz processor from Celeron / Pentium (and the choice), as well as RAM from 2 to 8 GB (in the max configuration, which is quite difficult to find on our market) plus to this weak video card. On the positive side: a nice price tag. On the negative side: not the best build and assembly materials; inconvenient keyboard and touchpad; problematic upgrade of RAM; not the best matrix. If you want to buy Asus x540s, then you should think twice, although there are not so many options for the declared price.

Delivery and packaging

ASUS X540SA laptop is packed in a standard medium-sized cardboard box, which has a dark matte design and minimal information content (several brand logos and a couple of stickers with technical data). The scope of delivery consists of a compact power supply unit, network cable and user documentation.

Appearance, arrangement of elements

ASUS X540SA has a classic, but at the same time very attractive appearance... A pleasant effect is created by a well-chosen two-tone color scheme (black and beige), as well as the characteristic design of the display lid and work area, which are stylized like brushed metal.

The laptop case is quite compact in size (381.4 x 251.5 x 25.4 mm) and light weight (1.9 kg). It is completely made of plastic, which has pleasant tactile properties and good wear resistance. Almost all basic surfaces are matte, which allows you to effectively deal with any dirt.

The exception is the upper part of the screen unit, which, due to its characteristic texture, collects fingerprints rather quickly. Fortunately, they are also easy to remove with the help of available tools. It is adorned with a corporate logo located exactly in the center of the lid.

The maximum opening angle is about 135 °, which is enough for all everyday tasks. The bezels around the screen are fitted with rubber pads to stay in place.

Directly the block itself is held by two plastic hinges, which are characterized by a tight move. They perfectly fix the display in any accessible position, however, they do not allow opening the laptop with one hand (you have to hold the base).

The working panel of the laptop is presented in the form of a solid plate made of matte plastic. It is well fixed and practically does not bend over a large area, even under increased pressure. However, with more active typing or using the touchpad, there is a subtle rattle of the work area, which you have to get used to.

The ASUS X540SA laptop is distinguished by a quite standard and rather convenient arrangement of functional elements, which allows you to connect all the necessary peripherals to it. On the left side there is a charger socket, a USB Type-C port, a cooling grille, an RJ45 network interface, two video connectors (D-Sub and HDMI), USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, and a combo audio jack. As for the right side, only the optical drive carriage and the Kensington lock hole are located here. I would really like to see at least one USB port on this side, which would facilitate the process of connecting a wired mouse and relieve the opposite side. The front side of the device has a card reader slot and two LED indicators, while the back side is devoid of any connectors or other functional elements.

The base of ASUS X540SA is not demountable, which excludes the possibility of self-updating the configuration. In addition to the rounded lip of the built-in battery and several mounting bolts, there are four small rubber feet that provide a fairly reliable grip of the device on almost any surface.

The build quality of the laptop and the level of rigidity of the case in general are pleasantly pleasing. All structural elements fit tightly, without visible backlash and gaps. The only controversial point is the relatively free punching of the central part of the display unit cover, in which, when closed, the screen can rest against the keyboard.

Input Devices

ASUS X540SA is equipped with a full-size (382 x 102 mm) island-style keyboard with a full numeric keypad. Its base is slightly recessed into the work surface. The keyboard unit is fixed well, but the base, which is part of the whole working panel, slightly bends in the left side. The buttons are equipped with a classic scissor-membrane mechanism, which has a short and fairly quiet stroke with a comfortable tactile response. The caps have a standard flat shape and are slightly enlarged (basic - 16 x 16 mm; digital block- 16 x 13 mm; functional and arrows - 14 x 10 mm). There is no backlight.

The drawing of the symbolic elements is carried out by the printing method. It is distinguished by quite good quality and good wear resistance, but it is characterized by an unsuccessful color scheme. If the white Latin alphabet is perfectly distinguishable, then finding the required Cyrillic character may cause problems, since they are rather dark.

The touchpad of the laptop is represented by a one-piece touch panel of large dimensions - 105 x 73 mm. It is slightly recessed into the base and has good definition. The panel cover is made of matte plastic with pleasant tactile properties and provides easy sliding. The touchpad's sensitivity is quite high. There is full support for multitouch gestures in the Windows OS environment, which are configured using the proprietary ASUS Smart Gesture software.

Display, sound, webcam

The ASUS X540SA laptop is equipped with a 15.6-inch display AU Optronics N156BGE-E42 with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and a pixel density of 100 ppi. It is based on a fairly good TN + film matrix with good response time and pleasant color rendering. The viewing angles are average, which is enough for everyday tasks. The built-in LED backlight has a good headroom for indoor use. However, when working outdoors on a bright sunny day, the backlight may no longer be enough, especially given the glossy screen finish.

The sound subsystem is represented by two sufficiently high-quality stereo speakers with support for SonicMaster and ICESound technologies. They are located under the keyboard, which is why sound is output through the slots in the upper row of keys. Despite such an unusual structure, the sound flow is not perceived as muffled; on the contrary, it has a quite pleasant sound with good detailing of high and medium frequencies, as well as a slight hint of low frequencies.

A simple 0.3-megapixel module with 480p resolution acts as a webcam. It is located above the laptop screen, surrounded by one activity indicator and two stereo microphones.

Hardware platform and performance

The reviewed laptop is equipped with a 2-core Intel Celeron N3050 processor with an operating clock frequency of 1600 MHz (can dynamically increase to 2166 MHz), which does not support Intel technology Hyper-Threading and is capable of processing only two data streams at a time. It is manufactured in accordance with the 14nm process technology and is based on the Intel Braswell microarchitecture using SoC design. This means that not only the cores of the central and graphic processors, but also the memory controller paired with the chipset microcircuit are located on its crystal. The L2 cache is 2MB and the power consumption is less than 6W.

The processor is equipped with a built-in graphics adapter Intel HD Graphics with an operating frequency range from 320 to 600 MHz and support for the most popular APIs (DirectX 11.2 and OpenGL 4.2). The video memory of the accelerator is allocated from the RAM of the laptop and can be up to 1 GB.

The built-in CPU memory controller supports the robot DDR3L-1600 MHz modules in 2-channel mode with a maximum capacity of 8 GB. In our case, only 2 GB of RAM is installed, which work in single-channel mode.

Wireless communication of the laptop is carried out using the Atheros AR9485 network controller, which supports the 802.11b / g / n Wi-Fi standards. Optionally can be installed wireless module Bluetooth 4.0, which is missing in this model. As for the wired connection, it is done through the Realtek RTL8139 / 810x module.

The disk subsystem is represented by HDD Hitachi HTS545050A7E680 with SATA interface 6 Gbps and 500 GB capacity. It has an 8 MB data exchange buffer and a spindle speed of 5400 rpm.

Also, the laptop has a built-in optical drive TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-228GB, which supports reading and writing dual-layer DVDs.

The ASUS X540SA comes into the hands of the user with a preinstalled operating Windows system 10 Home, which is supplemented with a number of proprietary applications and utilities. They expand the functionality of the system, and also help keep the laptop software up to date.

As you can see from the test results, the performance of the laptop is at a relatively low level, which fully corresponds to the stated parameters. His main task will be to work with text editors, surfing the Internet, watching HD content, as well as running simple casual games that do not require a powerful graphics subsystem. In addition, having a good audio subsystem, the device will be able to satisfy the needs of most undemanding users, acting as a home multimedia entertainment center.

Cooling system, noise level and temperature conditions

Active cooling system ASUS X540SA provides fast and efficient hot air removal. Its performance was tested in three modes: "Normal", "Game" and "Stress" at an air temperature in the test laboratory at 26 ° C.

Completely silent CO remains only in idle mode or at extremely light loads, when the temperature of internal components does not exceed 55 ° C. However, as soon as several applications are run at the same time, the cooling system makes itself felt, starting to generate insignificant noise. In game mode (for example, World of Tanks), the temperature values immediately rise to 76 ° C, and the cooler's performance becomes more noticeable. The system responds in a similar way to stress loads, during which the components of the laptop warm up to 80 ° C, although even then the noise produced does not cause any discomfort.

Upon visual inspection of a working laptop, we did not register any problems with the heating of the case. The device remained quite cool and pleasant to the touch, with the exception of a small area near the CO holes and the base above the central processor.

Power supply, battery and battery life

ASUS X540SA is equipped with a non-removable 3-element lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2930 mAh (33 Wh, 11.25 V), which is able to provide a good level of autonomy due to the good energy efficiency of the hardware platform.

So, in the maximum load mode, the laptop was able to work for 2 hours and 13 minutes, and when watching Full HD video - 4 hours and 24 minutes. In idle mode, its battery was discharged in 9 hours 19 minutes, which is one of the best indicators in the class.

Uninterrupted operation from the mains and timely battery charging is provided by a proprietary 45 W power supply (19 V, 2.47 A). It is able to fully recharge its battery in less than 2.5 hours. Moreover, its operating temperature does not exceed 45 ° C.

Outcomes

As expected, the laptop ASUSX540 SA turned out to be an interesting and quite promising device. By purchasing it, the owner receives a model with a stylish and practical design, high quality assembly, compact dimensions and low weight, loud and fairly high-quality audio subsystem, support for the most popular interface connectors, as well as with very decent indicators of autonomy.

Of course, there were some minor mandatory flaws that are found in devices of this category. But in general, they fade into the background against the background of the existing advantages. The last word for the price. And if it turns out to be justified, then the laptop will definitely be a good help for almost any user who is looking for a reliable and relatively inexpensive tool for solving simple everyday tasks.

Advantages:

  • stylish and practical enough design;
  • good build quality;
  • compact dimensions and weight;
  • full-size island-style keyboard with separate numeric keypad;
  • loud and pleasant enough sounding of the audio subsystem;
  • energy efficient hardware platform;
  • availability of all popular interface connectors, including the new USB Type-C;
  • sufficiently efficient cooling system;
  • good level of autonomy.

Peculiarities:

  • relatively low productivity;
  • the lack of a USB port on the right side, which complicates the connection of a wired mouse a little.

Disadvantages:

  • soiled cover of the display unit.

We express our gratitude to the Ukrainian representative office of the companyASUSTeKComputerInc. for the laptop provided for testing.
