What are the features and functions of the moto z. Comparative review of smartphones Moto Z and Moto Z Play with Moto Mods

The sleek metal body is not the only advantage of this flagship smartphone, which also boasts powerful hardware. In addition to connecting removable modules, he also has support for the Google Daydream VR platform. Vesti.Hi-tech found out all the pros and cons of Lenovo Moto Z.

Smartphones of the Moto Z family - Moto Z and (see our review) were simultaneously presented on Russian market at the end of November last year. Both models got 5.5-inch screens, USB Type-C interfaces, and the ability to add new features to themselves using replaceable Moto Mods. If a stake is placed on high autonomy with not the most outstanding performance, then the trump card of the premium Moto Z is a record small thickness. The manufacturer claims that this is the most slim smartphone in the world. Moto Mods are supported the same as for: interchangeable decorative panels, Hasselblad True Zoom camera, Incipio offGRID battery, Moto JBL Soundboost stereo system and Insta-Share projector. "Moto mods" are fixed on the back panel with built-in magnets, and communication with a smartphone is carried out through a special interface.

Design, ergonomics

At first glance, the Moto Z is not much different from: there is another microphone on the front panel (now there are four of them) and two motion sensors. As for the dimensions in terms of plan, the difference between them can be seen only by placing the devices side by side: 155.3x75.3 mm for the flagship model versus 156.4x76.4 mm for the mid-budget model.

The manufacturer explains the record thickness in "naked" form (5.19 mm versus 6.99 mm) and the discrepancy in weight (136 g versus 165 g) by the use of aircraft-grade aluminum and military steel for Moto Z parts. Protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 3, according to unofficial information, was replaced by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 (in the technical specifications the version of the glass is not specified).

For the premium model, there are two main body colors - black with gray trim (black front panel) and gold (white front panel). The Moto Z's water-repellent coating is designed to keep out rain, splashes and even spills.

So, the front panel of the flagship of the line was protected by Corning Gorilla Glass with an oleophobic coating.

Around the noticeably protruding frame of the decorative slot for the speaker, they assembled an LED flash and a front camera (right), as well as light and proximity sensors (left). Like that, the Moto Z has only one speaker, combining the functions of spoken and multimedia.

On-screen buttons "Back", "Home" and "Recent applications" are made in the form of icons "triangle", "circle", "square". The Moto logo has moved from the top to the bottom, below the screen.

There is also a fingerprint scanner with a miniature square-shaped touch pad, to the left and right of which a microphone hole and a motion sensor are located in pairs.

The left edge of the hull is empty.

On the right edge there is a power / lock button with embossed notches, and a little higher - separate, unusually small, volume control keys. Their placement, like that of ours, did not seem very convenient given the device's dimensions.

The upper end of the case was occupied with a hole for a microphone and a locked slot, the key from which is included in the kit with the smartphone. Alas, unlike, this slot in Moto Z is combined, that is, either two nanoSIM cards or one nanoSIM and a microSD memory card can be placed on the tray at the same time.

From the inscriptions on the bottom end, you can, in particular, find out the country of manufacture of the smartphone and its type. The symmetrical USB Type-C connector is now left alone, and to connect the 3.5 mm audio headset connector, you must use a special USB Type-C adapter cable. Here's a "rationalization" - not everyone is comfortable, but as in the iPhone 7.

At the same time, the reference to the thickness of the smartphone (5.19 mm) as the reason for the lack of an analog audio jack is not very convincing. Recall that, for example, the 5.15 mm thick that appeared in Russia back in 2014 (our review), nevertheless, received a 3.5 mm jack for the corresponding audio connector. But back to Moto Z.

On the back, quite branded, panels of textured metal, decorated with a graphic Moto logo, top and bottom provided radio-transparent (looks like glass) inserts for the antennas.

In the lower part of the same panel, in addition to the connector for plugging in replaceable Moto Mods modules, we have taken care of a hole for another microphone,

and at the top - for a noticeably protruding main photo-module.

In addition to the lens, its circular platform, which received the Moto text logo, also houses a laser rangefinder and a dual-tone LED flash. The plastic cover with a textile texture that comes with the smartphone, the same as that of the smartphone, has a place not only for the text and graphic Moto logos, but also for the holes for the main photo module and microphone.

Despite its record thinness, Moto Z, when connected to Moto Mods (even a removable panel), already looks quite "plump".

Screen, camera, sound

The display of the Moto Z smartphone, like that, boasts a 5.5-inch diagonal. Only now the screen resolution has become truly flagship - Quad HD (2560x1440 pixels). At the same time, the density of dots per inch increased and, according to the manufacturer's calculations, amounted to 535 ppi. Apparently, there is no particular sense in dwelling in detail on the features of the Super AMOLED matrix, on the basis of which the Moto Z screen is built. We just recall that we are usually talking about economical power consumption, good anti-glare properties and very bright (acidic) colors.

The Moto Z's capacitive touch screen supports multi-touch, while the AntTuTu Tester and Multitouch Tester test programs have confirmed that up to ten simultaneous touches are recognized. The backlight level in a fairly wide range can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic tuning by light sensor ("Adaptive control"). There are no complaints about the minimum brightness value (for working in the dark), but at the maximum, the picture is quite readable even in winter sunlight.

The settings provide two modes for displaying colors. At the same time, in the "Normal" mode, they look warmer, but the choice of the "Vivid" option allows you to keep the cool acidity of the Super AMODED display colors. The "Displayed Size" section sets the size of interface elements, including images and symbols (by default, small and large). The manufacturer warns that the order of application icons in this case may depend on the selected scale. There is also a separate font control (with preview) in the screen settings - small, by default, large and huge. To combat perspiration, Corning Gorilla Glass has a high-quality oleophobic coating, so that your finger glides on the screen very smoothly. The Moto Display option, available through the Moto app, allows you to display the current time, battery charge status and various notifications on the locked screen. To see them, you need to take the device in your hand or bring your palm to the front panel of the lying smartphone.

The Moto Z uses a 13-megapixel Sony IMX214 Exmor RS sensor (1 / 3.06-inch optical size) for the main camera with a regular pixel size (1.12 microns). The lens with optical stabilization and f / 1.8 aperture was equipped with contrast autofocus and laser (infrared) rangefinder. The dual-tone LED flash is referred to in context with the CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) parameter. Recall that this, in contrast to the two-tone flash on the iPhone (True Tone flash), is called a similar device on Motorola smartphones (CCT flash). Such a flash does not give more light, as, for example, a regular double flash (allowing to illuminate objects located 1.4 times further), but by changing the radiation intensity of LEDs of different colors, it is designed to expand the range of color temperatures in order to maintain white balance under existing lighting.

The maximum resolution of the main camera is achieved with the classic aspect ratio of the frame (4: 3) and is 4160x3120 pixels (13 MP), and with a widescreen (16: 9) - 4160x2340 pixels (9.7 MP). Shooting with this camera on the machine, frankly, did not disappoint, even in low light. Examples of photos can be viewed.

Frontal camera moto Z turned out to be the same as y (more precisely, of course, the opposite). It uses a 5-megapixel OmniVision OmniBSI-2 OV5693 sensor (optical size 1/4 inch, pixel size - 1.4 microns). In addition to its own LED flash, this camera received a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f / 2.2, an angle of view of 85 degrees and a fixed focus. The maximum resolution for selfies with the classic aspect ratio (4: 3) is 2592x1944 pixels (5 MP), and for widescreen gruffy (16: 9) - 2592x1458 pixels (3.8 MP).

Both cameras in Moto Z can shoot in Full HD-resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16: 9) with a frame rate of 30 fps, while the main camera can increase the frequency to 60 fps. In addition, it provides a recording format with a resolution of 4K - [email protected] fps (3840x2160 pixels). For four times slow-motion video (slo-mo), the main camera provides only HD quality (1280x720 pixels). The content is saved in MP4 container files (AVC - video, AAC - sound).

Moto Z smartphones have the same Camera app installed with quite a few simple interface... You can take a picture either by touching the screen anywhere, or by tapping on the "Shutter" icon button. To the right of it, an icon was placed to select the current mode - "Photo", "Video", "Panorama", "Slow motion" and "Professional mode". In the latter case, at the "orbital" settings, the values of ISO, shutter speed, exposure levels, white balance and focus are independently set. The Auto HDR option, available for both cameras, shifts the decision to enable the appropriate mode to automatic.

You can change the scale (x1-x8) on the viewfinder by moving your finger up or down the screen. It is convenient to go to the gallery of pictures with a swipe to the left. Swipe to the right opens the settings panel. The "Quick Shot" option allows you to open the "Camera" application or switch from the main to the front camera and vice versa (for this you need to quickly turn your wrist twice with the smartphone). To adjust focus and exposure, the "paperclip" in the viewfinder should be dragged to the desired location, where the control can easily adjust the brightness of the picture. It should be noted that QR and one-dimensional barcodes, as well as business cards (correct only in the Latin alphabet) are scanned automatically, you just need to point the camera at the corresponding object.

Kind words deserve a single Moto Z speaker in two faces. Its sound, perhaps, is not so loud, but it is pleasantly clean. There is no built-in FM tuner in the smartphone. Recall that the included adapter to the USB Type-C connector is intended for connecting a standard audio headset with a 3.5 mm connector. Unfortunately, it is hardly possible to listen to high-quality tracks in wireless headphones, since not a word has been said about the aptX codec for Bluetooth.

Filling, performance

The Moto Z's performance is largely determined by its Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (MSM8996) base platform, which uses a 14nm FinFET process technology that uses 3D transistors.

Of the four 64-bit Kryo cores, one duo (for demanding tasks) clocked at up to 2.15 GHz, and the other (for less demanding processes) clocked at up to 1.59 GHz. The manufacturer claims that the latter value was brought to 1.8 GHz. The quartet of cores complements the Adreno 530 (624 MHz) graphics controller with support for OpenGL ES 3.1 + AEP (Android Extension Pack), Renderscript, OpenCL 2.0 and API Vulcan, as well as the Spectra ISP, Hexagon 680 DSP and X12 LTE modem ( Cat. 12/13). In addition, the Snapdragon 820 features fast charging technology Quick Charge 3.0. On board Moto Z carries 4 GB 4-channel 16-bit (total 64-bit) random access memory LPDDR4 (1866 MHz). Today, no one expects any records from a smartphone based on Snapdragon 820, but the power of this platform is more than enough even for the most "heavy" applications.

On synthetic AnTuTu tests Benchmark,

And also on the benchmarks Geekbench 4, the flagship clearly marked its place in the list of results.

On the Epic Citadel visual test with variable settings of High Performance, High Quality and Ultra High Quality, the average frame rate (resolution 2368x1440 pixels), in fact, did not change - 60.3 fps, 60.3 fps and 60.0 fps, respectively.

On the universal gaming benchmark 3DMark in the recommended tests Sling Shot Extreme (Quad HD resolution), the Moto Z smartphone scored 1,769. The body temperature was insignificant.

The total number of points "knocked out" by the flagship on the Base Mark OS II cross-platform benchmark was 2,004.

When the device was turned on for the first time, out of 32 GB of internal memory, just over 9 GB was used. To expand storage in Moto Z, there is space in the combined slot, designed either for a second nanoSIM, or for a microSD / HC / XC memory card with a capacity (for the future) up to 2 TB. In addition, thanks to USB-OTG technology, you can also connect a USB storage device to your smartphone.

One radio module works with two nanoSIM cards in DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby) mode. In the settings of the subscriber identification modules, it is proposed to determine the profile of their use. At the same time, an option is available that will automatically detect the SIM card for each call. The set of 4G frequency bands contains the most popular in Russia - FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz) and Band 20 (800 MHz). Among other wireless communications, it is worth noting the Wi-Fi module 802.11 a / b / g / n / (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz), as well as Bluetooth 4.1 LE and NFC interfaces.

Using the NFC interface and the Moscow Transport Cards application, you can find out the balance of the Moscow Troika card and the Moscow Region Strelka card. You should apply the card, focusing on the lower edge of the round platform of the main photo-module, above which (under the removable cover) there is a radio-transparent insert (area of the NFC antenna).

Satellite systems GPS and GLONASS are used for positioning and navigation. A-GPS mode is also available (positioning over cellular and Wi-Fi networks).

The non-removable battery capacity of the Moto Z is a modest 2,600 mAh, which is noticeably less than that of (3,510 mAh). According to the manufacturer, at 100% filling of the installed battery, it lasts for 30 hours of using the smartphone. In addition, thanks to TurboPower technology, in just 15 minutes, the fully discharged (last important!) Battery of the Moto Z fills up enough that it can work for 6-8 hours. For this, along with the smartphone, the already familiar 15-watt (rated for a current of 3 A) charger with a fixed cable is supplied. Alas, a separate USB Type-C cable for communication with a PC is also not provided in the Moto Z package.

For the Moto Z battery, the AnTuTu Tester test program averaged 7,564 points. At the same time, the test set of videos in MP4 format (hardware decoding) and Full HD-quality at full brightness spun continuously for almost 9 hours. In general, not bad, although it should be borne in mind that in games this value is usually reduced by almost half.

Time autonomous work the smartphone can extend the power saving mode, which is activated either forcibly or automatically, when the battery level is 5% or 15%. Savings come from reduced performance, and by turning off background traffic, geolocation and vibration alerts.

Features of the software

The Moto Z smartphone, announced with the Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) operating system, received an update to Android 7.0 (Nougat) last December. With built-in Doze 2.0 technology a new version 20% more energy efficient than the previous one. It is also worth noting the stability and speed of the interface. Wherein, Android capabilities is still supplemented with Moto and Moto Mods apps.

As in Moto Z, the fingerprint scanner is recommended for third-party applications with this option, as well as when paying for purchases. Recall that after registering at least one fingerprint, a regular tap unlocks the smartphone, and a hold tap will lock it.

Some proprietary shells are able to split the screen between two applications. Now this has been taught by the Android 7.0 OS interface. So, if in a program that is designed for this option (which she will not hesitate to report), make a tap with hold on the "Recent Applications" icon, then the smartphone screen is divided into two parts, where the required pair is selected among previously launched programs (for example , QuickPic Gallery and MX Player Video Player). It is also convenient, for example, to make two visible tabs of the Chrome browser. In turn, Moto Assistant supports gestures and voice commands, and also manages on-screen notifications in Moto Display mode.

The Moto Z is ready for the Google Daydream virtual platform. But this requires an appropriate VR headset, which, alas, was not at hand.

Purchase, conclusions

Among the flagship "chips" of the Moto Z smartphone, of course, we must include its thin and light body, powerful stuffing, Super AMOLED screen with Quad HD-resolution, high-quality main camera with optical stabilization, proprietary TurboPower fast charging, and, of course, the latest OS Android 7.0 (Nougat). Among the extra bonuses, the ability to connect replaceable Moto Mods is definitely highlighted, and, in addition, support for the Google Daydream VR platform.

But the alternative installation of a second SIM-card and a memory card should certainly be attributed to the disadvantages of Moto Z, if only because we managed to find a separate place to expand the storage, for example. Another, not evoking positive, decision of the developers was the lack of a 3.5 mm connector for an audio headset. But the main disadvantage of the flagship, of course, is, of course, its high price, which, according to Yandex.Market, in large retail chains amounted to 49,990 rubles. However, if such an amount, especially seasoned with the Moto brand, does not cause internal protest, then the purchase of plug-in accessories, for example, a JBL Soundboost stereo system (6,990 rubles) and / or an additional Incipio offGRID battery (3,990 rubles), looks like a completely justified waste. Moreover, this collection will probably want to be supplemented later with a Daydream VR headset.

After the transfer of Motorolla under the wing of Lenovo, the iconic brand faced a difficult task - not to lose the army of fans of the company, who were always perceived as fresh blood among countless identical devices from other manufacturers.

And the new items from Lenovo really turned out to be interesting. The main feature of the Play series smartphones is a modular interface that allows you to improve the functionality of the smart with the help of separately sold accessories. The Moto Z Play, whose review we bring to your attention, is the youngest model in the Play line, which is cheaper than flagships, but at the same time offers all the advantages of a modular design. Let's test the novelty and decide whether it can establish itself in the world of smartphones, where numbers and the pursuit of technical characteristics rule.

Price and main characteristics

In terms of cost, Moto Z Play balances on the verge between expensive middle peasants and flagships, its current price today is 32 thousand rubles.

Specifications:

  • display: 5.5 ”, Super AMOLED FHD 1920 * 1080 px;
  • processor: Snapdragon 625 + Cortex A53 video accelerator;
  • RAM: 3 GB;
  • internal memory: 32 GB + micro SDXC memory cards up to 256 GB;
  • camera: main - 16 MP + dual flash, front - 5 MP;
  • communication: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, LTE;
  • battery: 3510 mAh.

The dimensions of the smartphone are 156 * 76 * 7 mm, weight - 165 grams.

Completion and appearance

The smartphone is packed in a simple but neat box made of thick cardboard, inside which, in addition to the phone, is:

  • a paper clip for removing the card tray (has an increased needle length, so it will not work to open the tray with another paper clip);
  • charging adapter with non-removable cable;
  • textile overlay on back part housing.

We reproach the manufacturer for the absence in the kit USB cable-C, which will need to be purchased separately.

Externally, Moto Z Play practically does not differ from the flagship of the Z line. The entire front of the smartphone is covered with Gorilla Glass 3, which has an excellent oleophobic layer.

Above the screen is a selfie camera module, a flash, a set of sensors and a hole for the earpiece (protrudes slightly above the surface).

There is a fingerprint scanner under the screen, which is designed in the form of a square area. The sensor key does not function as the Home button - all control buttons on the Moto Z Play are on-screen. The fingerprint sensor works perfectly, the phone is unlocked quickly and accurately. Also, using the scanner, you can turn off the screen, which in practice is much more convenient than using a mechanical lock key.

The back of the Moto Z Play is made of Corning glass. The glass easily collects fingerprints, but it can be easily wiped off with any cloth. The camera block is located on the surface, which has impressive dimensions; the lens itself occupies only a small part of it. The camera eye sticks out quite strongly, but if you put on the supplied textile cover, the surface of the rear part will be leveled.

There is also a block of magnetic contacts on the back, through which Moto Mods modules are connected to the phone. The included textile pad is needed just to protect the contacts; the manufacturer strongly recommends putting it on a smartphone in cases where the modules are not used.

The side ends of the smartphone are made of metal; they have two small plastic inserts for antennas. On the upper edge there is a tray for cards, it has a double-sided hybrid design, and allows you to use two SIM cards and a USB flash drive at the same time.

At the bottom there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which the older model of the Moto Z series does not have, and a USB-C port.

The left side is empty, while on the right there is a volume rocker (which, by the way, is small and not very convenient) and a raised key to turn off the smartphone. Build quality is excellent, nothing to complain about

Screen

The display in the Moto Z Play is not bad, but there are a lot of complaints about it. This is a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED matrix with Full HD resolution and a pixel density of 403 ppi. According to the manufacturer, the smartphone uses a screen matrix from Samsung, however, due to software optimization in quality, it is inferior to the screens of the flagships S7 and S7 Edge

The viewing angles are almost maximum, with color deviations they are not inverted, only the brightness drops slightly. The maximum brightness is 361 kD, which is enough for comfortable use of the smartphone under the sun. Auto brightness correction works adequately.

Pentile is practically invisible, only when viewing the picture from a distance of less than 10 cm, there is some graininess in the transitions between white and other colors. Contrast and color saturation, as expected for AMOLED, is excellent.

Now about the disadvantages. We didn't like the factory color calibration. There is a clear bias with cold tones, which is why the white has a bluish tint. The colors overall look a little messy, which is unlikely to be imperceptible to ordinary users, but for photographers, the Moto Z Play's display will definitely disappoint. We put the deserved 4/5 on the screen.

Performance

The smartphone is equipped with a Snapdragon 625 processor, paired with a video accelerator Adreno 506. This bundle has proven itself in all devices in 2016, it is characterized by good performance and almost complete absence of heating.

Moto Z Play is no exception - the shell flies, when surfing the Internet there are no even the slightest jams, resource-intensive applications and 3D games work without problems. No shoals were noticed for smartphones even when playing 4K video. In the Moto Z Play benchmark, 62.5 thousand parrots are gaining. For daily tasks 3 GB of RAM is enough with a margin, and the internal storage of 32 GB can be expanded with flash drives up to 256 GB.

Camera

Both Moto Z Play cameras - main and front, are equipped with flashes, dual and single-tone, respectively. The front uses a 5 MP OmniVision OV5693 module with an aperture of 2.2. Despite the presence of a flash, which can be regarded as an emphasis on selfie capabilities, the pictures do not come out of the highest quality - problems with detail and sharpness are on the face.

The main camera (sensor OmniVision OV16860 13 MP, 2.0) produces good pictures. The exposure and white balance are determined accurately, the detail is decent, there are no problems with autofocus (it is laser here).

The Moto Z Play also shows itself worthy when shooting indoors in low light levels. Automation correctly sets the shutter speed and sensitivity, so a good picture can be taken on the first try.

The standard camera app does not have manual mode, however, there is good HDR and panorama shooting. With third-party apps, Moto Z Play can shoot in RAW format. Video recording is possible with a 4K resolution (bitrate 50 Mbps, 30 fps), the quality of videos is simply excellent and comparable to the flagship of the market.

Speaker, sound quality

The Moto Z Play's main speaker is really good. It is loud, clear in sound and has a very noticeable level of low frequencies, so you can enjoy listening to music. The speaker is also good, the interlocutor's speech is perfectly audible, while the sound is not flat, you can even distinguish the timbre of the voice and other nuances.

The sound through the headphones does not disappoint. There is no dedicated DAC, but the 625 dragon delivers decent sound, which requires high-quality mid-range headphones. As a player, the Moto Z Play can last 30 hours on a single charge.

Battery

The autonomy of Moto Z Play deserves extremely positive reviews - with moderate use of the phone, a 3510 mAh battery lasts for 2 days. Tests show the following results: 15 hours of watching HD video and 27 hours of reading with a screen brightness of 30%, an hour of playing tanks drains the battery by 18%.

The smartphone supports QuickCharge 2.0 fast charging, it can be charged from scratch in 70-75 minutes, in normal mode, charging takes about 3 hours. It is also worth considering that you can purchase a mod in the form of a 2200 mAh battery for the phone, which will further increase the already good autonomy.

Communication and Internet

The advantage of Moto Z Play is the ability to fully use two sim cards and a flash drive. There is only one radio module in the smartphone, the quality of the network prima is not satisfactory. On a cold start, the navigation satellites (GLONASS and GPS), the smartphone determines 20 seconds.

The device works with Wi-Fi interfaces(max data transfer rate 57 Mb / s), Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC, however the latter does not support Mifare Classic, which prevents it from reading subway transport cards. It is possible to connect peripheral devices to a smartphone using USB-C, the cable itself is not included in the package.

Moto Z Play video review

Competitors, conclusion

The Moto Z Play is controversial. For 33 thousand rubles, it offers an interesting design, excellent autonomy, a decent camera, an average display and, importantly, pure android... The performance of the smartphone is good, it is enough for any task, but not a record for the money. In this price category, there are many Chinese (,) on Snapdragon 820, which in synthetic tests will be an order of magnitude more powerful. The question is, do you need it?

Instead of excess performance, we are offered the ability to use mods. The aforementioned battery (price - 4 thousand rubles), a camera module with optical zoom from Hasselblad (20 thousand rubles), a mini-projector that produces a picture with a diagonal of 70 inches (23 thousand rubles) and a speaker from JBL (7 thousand ).

The Moto Z Play is undeniably one of the most exciting devices of the last year. If its price does not bother you and you are not chasing the power of iron, then this is a really good option for a smartphone with the expectation of long-term use.

Let's take a closer look at the smartphone.

Equipment

In addition to the smartphone itself, the kit includes a charger, a three-half mm Type-C adapter and a cover on back panel.

Design

Above the screen is a speaker that performs both basic and speaking functions, a light sensor, a camera and an LED flash. The loudspeaker has an excellent volume, which is clearly noticeable during video playback and during a telephone conversation.

On the bottom of the display is a fingerprint scanner, and on the sides of it are two microphones and a motion sensor.

The fingerprint scanner is not made of a round shape, but more like a square, but with round edges. The scanner is not a touch button. The response speed of the scanner is fast. By touching it, it is possible to unlock the phone or turn off the display.

Motion sensors allow you to see the time and notifications. This function is triggered when you move your hand over the sensors. The phone reacts to various movements. For example, if you make two sharp waves with the phone, it will turn on the flashlight, and when the smartphone is tilted left and right, the camera application opens. When you pick up the phone during a call, it automatically switches to vibration mode. Silent mode is also activated when the phone is turned face down.

On the right edge of the device there are sound volume and power buttons. Interesting feature the power keys are ribbed, which makes them feel great.

The bottom of the smartphone is equipped with a Type C connector, which serves for charging and synchronization. But the package does not include a cable, so you need to buy it separately. There is no headphone jack, and the phone needs an adapter, which is included in the package, to use the headset.

Above you can find a slot for nanoSIM and microSD cards. The amount of additional memory is up to 200 GB.

At the very bottom of the rear panel are the contacts that are needed to connect the modules.

The back panel is made of aluminum and has a smooth and shiny finish that feels like glass. The rear camera protrudes significantly above the plane of the body.

Rear panel cover

The smartphone has a slim body with a camera that protrudes above it. In order for the camera to stop protruding, the user has the option to purchase the back cover separately. There are many options, including such an unusual one as a bamboo lid. Thus, the smartphone already looks more individual and more interesting, but it also becomes a little thicker.

Display

The screen of the device has a screen diagonal of 5.5 inches with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 4. In the settings, the user has the ability to change the color transmission of the screen, a choice of two types of color transmission: "bright" and "normal". Another feature of the screen is that the viewing angles are maximum, and the frames are small.

Operating system and processor

The device is equipped with Android 8 system.

The processor in the gadget is Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. The main memory is 4 Gigabytes. Together, these indicators allow the user to appreciate the speed of the phone. Perfect for games. Despite the good performance, the device also has a minus - the device tends to heat up.

Autonomy

The battery capacity of the battery is 2600 mAh. The capacity cannot be called great, but this figure is quite good for a phone with a thickness of 5.2 mm.

The battery life when watching video files, if the brightness is at maximum - 14 hours, and in reading mode - 9 hours.

The smartphone provides fast battery charging. This technology named by Motorola- TurboPower.

Fast battery charging

In modern smartphones, as a rule, technology is used that allows you to quickly charge the device's battery. TurboPower is the technology used for Motorola smartphones. The technology is based on a Qualcomm processor. The power supply does not have the usual USB cable and thus cannot be removed. When using different charging modes, the device's performance can reach 5 - 12 volts. This device is considered powerful. The size and weight of the block are decent. But this powerful device has a drawback. With TurboPower charging, the phone battery not only charges quickly, but also heats up significantly. Its temperature can rise by 15 - 20 degrees. This is the price of fast charging.

Camera

Rear camera with 13 Megapixels, OIS, F / 1.8 aperture, laser autofocus and LED flash. Camera functions allow you to automatically detect the type of picture and adapt in accordance with it (automatic activation of HDR or night modes). At night shooting pictures lose quality and noise becomes noticeable. In daylight, the device does an excellent job.

Indicators of the front camera - resolution 5 Megapixels, aperture value F / 2.2. The front camera has a separate flash for enhanced photo quality and a built-in beautifier.

An example of a camera shot of a Motorola Moto Z phone is presented below:

Communications

Mobile communication is well received by the smartphone (the device shows 4-5 bars in the same conditions where the iPhone catches only 3-4). GPS start takes 2-3 seconds, which is very fast and accurate. Function NFC smartphone supported, so the user gets the opportunity to pay for purchases using a smartphone, in those stores where the terminal allows it. Bluetooth is also present.

The Motorola Moto Z phone comes with four modules that can be purchased separately. Let's consider what these modules give the user.

Modules for Motorola

For this smartphone model, the user can get additional options if he purchases modules that are attached to the rear panel. There are four modules in total. Below we will take a closer look at the functions of each module.

Wireless speaker

Music lovers can buy wireless speakers to smartphones separately. JBL speakers are known for their good acoustics. And the Moro Z smartphone allows not only connection to such accessories, but also has a built-in JBL SoundBoost Speaker module, which attaches to the back cover. The speakers are automatically connected and the music is transferred to them. The sound quality is good and the module completely replaces wireless speakers. The JBL SoundBoost Speaker is also equipped with a stand in the shape of a leg, which is conveniently pulled out and with the help of it the phone is placed on the surface.

Rating of the best smartphones under 30,000 rubles in 2019

Yes, Motorola no longer plays a decisive role in the market - we will probably never wait for the new RAZR. But do something faceless? Maybe high quality, but ordinary? This is not about Moto - Lenovo clearly needs the brand to take risks. The new Z-series smartphones - like last year's Z, Z Play and Z Force - received an unusual feature, as if inherited by engineers from Google, under whose wing Motorola huddled for several years. It's about a modular design, albeit in a much less radical implementation than in Google Ara.

An accessory with various properties can be attached to the back panel of any Z-line smartphone: a logical additional battery, a speaker, a projector or a camera with optical zoom. The column, by the way, was developed jointly with JBL, and to create a photomodule they attracted no less Hasselblad - well, or at least used the big name of a Swedish company.

We tested the "base" model Moto Z, which stands in the middle between the less powerful, but designed for a long time without recharging Z Play and similar technical specifications, but at the same time equipped with an unbreakable Z Force display. In addition to modularity, I immediately want to draw your attention to a few more distinctive features of Moto Z: the AMOLED screen, which is still rare for smartphones not under the Samsung brand, and an ultra-thin (just over five millimeters) body stuffed with microphones - thanks to them, the communication quality should improve. And, finally, a hotly fashionable innovation - the absence of a mini-jack for headphones.

Appearance, ergonomics and software

We used to adjust external world for yourself - at least in small things surround yourself with "your", individual things. Recently, smartphones have become one of the central objects in our life - small, poorly distinguishable from each other pieces of metal / plastic with a screen. You can only express yourself through them with the help of designer protective covers. In the days of phones with removable batteries and thus replaceable back covers, some companies offered variations in this area. Motorola still employs people who remember those times very well - and in the new family, the concept of a removable back cover is back. The battery, however, is not removable, but that very modularity came to the rescue.

Moto Z looks a little intimidating out of the box: with a protruding camera "Adam's apple", a brand of glossy surface and sparkling contacts for plugging in replaceable modules. Back cover lies separately - it slightly covers the "shame" and returns the design to the smartphone more familiar to the modern look. By default, this is a "fabric" (actually plastic) cover in the manner of the Moto X Force. For 1,990 rubles, you can buy something else - there are plastic of different colors, under the skin and under the tree. The smartphone itself comes in three variations - black, white-silver and white-gold (the back magnetic panel is painted with gold or silver). You can imagine the scope for combinatorics.

The replaceable modules, like the covers, are magnetically attached to the back - in one motion and very securely. Implemented this is really great. And in general, in terms of thoughtfulness and quality of performance, Moto Z first of all suggests an iPhone. Moreover, the lack of a 3.5 mm jack is striking. As a result, we find a USB Type-C to mini-jack adapter in the kit. But the cable "USB Type-C - USB Type-A" is not in the box, the wire to the complete charger for some reason, soldered tightly. If you want to connect your smartphone to your computer, buy the cable separately. An inexplicable decision, to be honest.

But in the box there is a translucent bumper - it seems that the complete set was invented using a random number generator.

However, the surprises do not end there, Moto Z is a truly unusual gadget. Under the screen we see a square area - here, as you might guess, a fingerprint scanner is built in, as well as the Home key ... But no, the last statement is incorrect - this is only Fingerprint's scanner. And the Home button is virtual here, located on the screen. Why? Why?! Apparently because they could. But I lied a little - in fact, with this touch-sensitive key, with a vibration response (iPhone again?), You can turn off and turn on the display in one motion.

The scanner, by the way, is a classic, capacitive one, it works very quickly and stably - if you don't damage or get your finger dirty. Everything is at a standard high level for a modern flagship smartphone. Using the scanner, you can only unlock the device or make (in the future) purchases via Android Pay.

On the sides of the scanner, and this is most noticeable in the light version of the Moto Z, there are two microphones. There are four of them in total: one more is located on the upper edge and on the back panel (bottom). They help provide superior noise cancellation so you can be heard even in strong winds or on the subway - proven. I also draw your attention to the flash for the front camera above the display - this, however, was on the last generation of older Moto.

On top of that, Moto Z is the thinnest flagship smartphone today: 5.19 millimeters. Without taking into account the bulging camera, it is true - there is much more with it, but still nothing to worry about. In addition, for a gadget with a 5.5-inch display, it is very light - only 136 grams. Lovers of glass, metal and "pleasantly heavy hand", God forgive me, devices may seem lightweight - but I liked it. The device breaks the pattern slightly - at first glance it seems gigantic, especially after the Sony Xperia X Compact, which I used directly before Moto Z. But you instantly get used to it. Although it is, of course, impossible to use it with one hand - the screen is too big.

Add to all of the above an unusually organized camera module, where both the lens and the dual-LED flash are inscribed in one round block, and we get the most unusual looking flagship smartphone of 2016. Slightly pretentious, yes, but there were no ridiculous decisions or frills - great work, Motorola (and Lenovo)!

The smartphone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with the prospect of updating to Android 7.0 Nougat. In fact, there is no shell - we are dealing with a "pure" Google operating system, flavored with only a handful proprietary utilities Moto, which add a few gimmicks to gesture or voice control. For example, you can turn on the flashlight with a double chopping motion, and the screen turns on itself if you lift the smartphone from the table - nice little things. And no littering operating system unnecessary applications.

Replaceable modules

I managed to try two replaceable modules for Moto Z - JBL column and Hasselblad PV module. First of all, attention is drawn to the big names of partner companies. No one admits (at least in the foreseeable future) how great the contribution of Harman or the famous Swedes to the development of these things is, recalls the experience of Leica and Huawei in creating mobile cameras: there is every reason to believe that a well-deserved company participates only with its name and authority. However, these are only assumptions.

And the modules themselves turned out to be very interesting. First of all, attention is drawn to the ease of use. They are attached to the case instantly and very reliably - the magnetic system is invented and implemented perfectly. To remove them, you just need to grab the recess and apply minimal force. No switches, additional blocking buttons - an extremely intuitive and simple system.

There is no need to download and install additional software - a single preinstalled app Moto Mods, which independently recognizes the module connected to this moment, and rebuilds the system to use it. An additional battery icon appears in the status bar, if we are talking about a column, the camera interface changes, if we connect the Hasselblad module, the smartphone is perfectly ready for this.

Externally, the Moto Z, of course, is not changing for the better, turning from the thinnest flagship smartphone to the thickest and most bulky. But also quite within reason.

MotoJBLSoundboost. One of the most logical modules that provides a smartphone with a powerful enough sound so that it would not be ashamed to be the center of an impromptu party. However, this is about the level of JBL Clip, if you look for analogs in external mobile speakers of the same brand. Power and detail even level JBL Charge miniature Soundboost will not give - but the thing is quite convenient and compact.

Hasselblad True Zoom transforms Moto Z (as well as Moto Z Play) into the heir to the glory (if I may use that word here) Samsung Galaxy Zoom and Samsung Galaxy Camera. Outwardly, the new creation of Motorola / Lenovo really looks like them: huge touchscreen on the one hand, and the "digital camera" on the other - with a perforated protrusion for a grip with the right hand, a very protruding lens even in the off state, an impressive flash and even an autofocus illumination lamp. Separately, the build-up in the lower part of the lens rim is amusing - an obvious stylization under the button for releasing the lens from the mount. The main thing that the Hasselblad module gives to the smartphone user is 10x optical zoom.

The characteristics of the camera are quite common for a modern compact. A matrix with dimensions 1 / 2.3 '' with a resolution of 12 megapixels and optics with focal lengths of 4.5-45 mm (35-mm equivalent - 25-250 mm) are used. In addition to the optical zoom, there is also a 4x digital zoom - the usual crop, which reduces the image resolution. There is no built-in battery in Hasselblad True Zoom - it will consume the resources of the smartphone.

The saddest thing about this module is the optical aperture: f / 3.5-6.5. Despite the fact that the original Moto Z camera has an aperture of f / 1.8 at a wide angle - even taking into account the use of a smaller sensor (1/3 '') at the same resolution, the image quality is better - thanks to the significantly lower ISO, the noise is not so annoy. But the optical stabilizer is effective - even at the maximum zoom, more or less decent, blur-free pictures are obtained.

Autofocus is not very well implemented - it is a conventional contrast system that works very slowly and from time to time incorrectly. The minimum focusing distance at a wide angle is 5 cm.

The camera interface is also frustrating. This is Hasselblad! I would like at least minimal control over the process - but there is only an automatic mode and several plot modes to choose from. But you can record RAW - but the icon for working with an uncompressed image format repeats the usual one; strange negligence. By the way, Leica-Huawei is reminded not only of its extensive branding, but also an additional monochrome shooting mode.

What pleased me was the speed of work. The module has its own power button, it activates the camera application, and instantly - the "trunk" of the lens extends in less than a second. There is also a shutter button with a zoom control lever, it is quite convenient to work with the camera.

Examples of shooting with Hasseblad True Zoom module

The quality of the images is not impressive - for the better, in comparison with the camera of the smartphone itself, it differs in the first place dynamic range, but in terms of color rendition and work in the dark, I liked the built-in Moto Z camera more. But, again, a Hasselblad True Zoom user gets an offer that is virtually unique to a smartphone - an optical zoom.

By the way, you cannot shoot 4K video using the module - only Full HD. And if you remove it and simply shoot it on a smartphone, then no problem. Smells a little phantasmagoria.

The price of the module is, however, 19,990 rubles - you can also think about buying a full-fledged camera with a large sensor and built-in Wi-Fi in order to transfer files to a smartphone and not lose efficiency.

The most logical module available today is an additional Incipio offGRID battery at a price of 3,990 rubles - it is really useful and much more convenient to use than a power bank. Lenovo is promising to greatly expand its plug-in fleet - and it will be very interesting to see what else you can think of in this particular area.
