I can't write on the keyboard. Why the keyboard does not work on the computer

If your computer keyboard does not work, then you have come to the right place. Here you will find step by step instructions to solve such problems. There can be many reasons for such a problem, and there are many solutions to them. First, you need to understand exactly when this problem occurs and what it is connected with. Usually, the keyboard can explode even when the operating system is loaded when entering a password or during work when entering text. The first malfunction depends on the type of keyboard, and the second on mechanical stress on it.

Why does the keyboard need to be cleaned periodically

I want to say right away that if you do not part with the keyboard even while eating, then choose a time, turn it off, and take good care of it.

Sticky keys and incomprehensible keyboard work are most often experienced by those people who like to chew on something while working at the computer, or, even better, drink beer or soda.

If your keyboard is not packaged in protective film, then all the crumbs and liquid from the bubbling drink will be inside her. You don't have to spill drinks on the keyboard. It is enough to put a glass of bubbling drink next to it, and all these bubbles will settle on the keyboard, and even get inside it.

And if you like to nibble on seeds or nuts, then your keyboard has probably accumulated crumbs, which will be enough for a good lunch for a hamster. Don't believe me ?! Then take the keyboard in your hands, turn it over, and shake it over the table.

What to do if it doesn't workUSB-keyboard

Check the keyboard connection. If it is wired, then the wires inside the cord could break, either at the base or at the USB connector.

If the keyboard is wireless, check the batteries inside the keyboard and the USB transmitter connected to the computer or laptop.

It happens that the transmitter or the USB connector where it is connected is faulty. If it is a USB connector, plug the transmitter into a different connector.

Let's check the keyboard connection settings inBIOS:

  1. Sign in BIOS settings(how to do this, read the article);
  2. We are looking for the item USB Keyboard Support or Legacy USB there (it depends on BIOS version) and switch Disabled to Enable.

Perhaps with a USB keyboard you will not be able to enter BIOS settings. Then you need to find a keyboard with an old PS / 2 connector or find an adapter for an old connector.

What to do if the keyboard does not work via the protocolPS/2

Finding a PS / 2 keyboard in a store is not easy, but some still use it and can sometimes fail too.

In order for the keyboard to work again, you need to reinstall its driver:

  1. Right-click on the "Start" menu button and select "Device Manager" from the drop-down list.
  2. Find the keyboard in the list of devices and expand the list. Usually, if there are any problems with a device, then there will be a yellow circle with an exclamation or question mark next to this device. Click on the inscription "HD Keyboard" with the right mouse button and select the action "Delete". Confirm your action and close Device Manager.

It often happens that you are preparing to perform some important work, and then bam - and the keyboard on the computer does not work. What to do in this case? How to deal with this problem? It will not be difficult to understand this and find solutions. This article will address a question that often arises from novice home PC users or already experienced professionals. Yes, it's all about the keyboard - it works, then it doesn't, but the work needs to be done. There can be many reasons for such problems, and most of them can be solved by the user himself, without leaving his workplace. The question of buying a new device can be postponed until the resource of the existing "capricious" girlfriend is completely exhausted. In addition to attention and the ability to correctly perform actions, special skills from the user in the process of solving the problem will not be required. For any model of any manufacturer computer keyboard the reasons for the refusal to work and the ways of their high-quality elimination in a short time will be given.

Possible reasons for the inoperability of the device

Using the method of the legendary Sherlock Holmes - the method of "deduction" - you can determine what is broken or what prevents the keyboard from doing its work. Factors of such problems include:

  • human, that is, the breakdown is caused by the actions of the user himself;
  • iron, in other words, equipment failure;
  • software - violation of settings and required programs and their complexes.

You can understand why the keyboard on the computer does not work, what to do in this case, by studying and going through possible reasons... Based on the selected factors, the following situations can be the reasons for device malfunctions:

1. If the user by his own actions or inaction has led to problems in working with the keyboard:

  • the integrity of the connection ports of the device is violated, or its cable is broken (transmitted);
  • Moisture entering the input device due to a spilled cup of tea, coffee, or direct rain from outside;
  • Excessive contamination of the internal parts of the keyboard with dust, animal hair, food crumbs and other debris.

2. If the problem is in the equipment itself:

  • the keyboard was not originally working;
  • the electronic component of the keyboard or its individual elements are out of order and require the intervention of service center specialists;
  • short circuit or power surge, caused by both problems with other elements of the iron part of the computer (power supply, motherboard) and failures in the centralized electrical network.

3. The main reasons for software failures in the keyboard are:

  • failure of device drivers;
  • the main settings of the motherboard (BIOS) have flown;
  • disabled for some reason in the operating system itself.

In more detail, all the reasons given and options for their solution are discussed further.

Broken cable or port

How to find out if there is a given reason for why the keyboard on the computer does not work, what to do if confirmation of this particular problem is found? You can answer this question after a certain simple diagnosis has been carried out. To do this, the user needs to do the following.

1. To check the integrity of the cable:

  • Look at the indication on the keyboard itself and try to turn on / off the "Caps Lok" and "Nam Lok" buttons. If the LEDs are on, then the cable is most likely not the cause.
  • If the LEDs are off, connect the keyboard to another free port (YUSB or PS / 2, depending on the type of device). LEDs lit up - reason found. The problem is a broken port.

2. How to check the keyboard connection port for operability:

  • Take any other device with the same type of connection and try to connect it to this port - if it works, then it’s not the port, but the keyboard cable or its electronic component.
  • If the other device does not work, then you need to recheck the settings of the motherboard (BIOS) for the disconnected power for the specified port.

After such a check, there should be a result that gives an understanding of what is broken, or makes it possible to understand that the problem is not in the cable and keyboard port. Elimination of the problem of a broken cable or port is possible only with the help of professionals in the centers for the repair of computer and office equipment.

Defective device

Although this is rather funny, there are times when the user tries to connect a "dead" keyboard and is very nervous that it does not work. This happens out of forgetfulness and out of ignorance. Anyway, after going through all the points of the analysis, you can easily figure everything out.

Just a little bit spilled

How to understand why the keyboard on the computer does not work, what should I do? But at the same time peaks and blinks lights (or just beeps)? In this case common reason problems are the ingress of liquid into the device: tea, coffee, drinks or just water. All of this liquid is conductive, and therefore leads to a short circuit, which can cause burnout of the sensitive electronic elements of the keyboard itself or the port controllers on the motherboard.

In order not to buy a new device, the user can carefully disassemble the keyboard and dry all the elements. With a probability of 50 percent, he can be expected to be successful that the girlfriend "comes to life."

Trash woke up, or Oh, these cats

Eating food in the workplace as well as having pets with hair is very bad for a PC's input device. And then the question arises: "The keyboard does not work on the computer, what should I do in this case?" The answer is simple - just like with a liquid-filled device, it is necessary to completely clean its interior. If you are lucky, the lumps and bundles of dirt did not have time to short-circuit the elements, and then everything will work again.

Factory marriage, or Time takes its toll

The keyboard as an electronic technique can be assembled with defects, leading to its early failure. In this case, it is necessary to send it for repair to service center manufacturer. If the warranty period has already expired, then it is necessary to compare the prices for repairs in paid workshops and new keyboard choosing for yourself best solution... You can identify such problems in a way similar to diagnosing the device cable and connection port.

Power surge, or computer electrical failure

If the keyboard on the computer does not work in this case, what should I do? When loading, you need to pay attention to how the computer itself behaves: everything goes as usual, or the launch happens (does not happen) with a failure. The result of a PC startup failure may be a voltage surge in the electrical network or a failure of the power supply, which, in turn, can affect both the operation of the keyboard and the performance of the entire computer device as a whole. To determine the malfunction of the keyboard, in this case, you need to connect it to another computer and test it.

Drivers flew

None of the above worked. The keyboard on the computer does not work, what should I do? Windows 7 Genius sees keyboards well and, if possible, picks up drivers for them. But it happens that a device from another company or with special multimedia capabilities, then they are required separate installation... If suddenly such a keyboard stopped working, it is possible that the drivers for it simply flew off. It's easy to check in the "Device Manager" - if the keyboard has a yellow question mark icon, then these are the drivers.

BIOS lost settings

If the keyboard on the computer does not work, what should I do? Windows 8, as well as others more early versions The OS stubbornly refuses to connect the device. In this case, you need to restart the computer and look into the settings of the motherboard (BIOS) by pressing "Divide" or "F2" at startup (for some computer devices). Among the table settings, you should first compare the date and time with the real one (if it shows a very old one, then you may need to replace the battery on the motherboard), and then find the line indicating the power supply to the ports (YUSB or PS / 2). If disabled, enable. You can also simply reset the settings to factory defaults by selecting them from the menu provided.

Antivirus, or OS protection programs

It happens that the keyboard on the computer does not work, what should I do? But the virus picks up and at the same time gives a message about the found Trojan or malware. In this case, most likely, the drivers or the keyboard key control program were mistaken for a virus, which led to the blocking of the device's access to the operating system and, accordingly, to its inoperability. Here you will need to create an exclusion rule for the antivirus in its settings, indicating to it the location path installed drivers or programs.

It also happens that the keyboard on the computer does not work, what should I do? The virus can infect the drivers and device management programs themselves, and therefore you cannot create an exclusion rule. First, you need to reinstall the damaged files, and then conduct a full scan of your computer for malware.

The side panel of the keyboard with numbers is an easy-to-use thing. After all, the keys on it are arranged in the usual order, like on a calculator. Sometimes it is very convenient to quickly calculate something. If these keys fail or break, you have to spend a lot of time typing numbers using the main keyboard. What to do in this case? And how can you enable a set if you don't have a sidebar on the right at all? Let's find out!

How to enable side numbers on the keyboard on the right

Any keyboard consists of several blocks. So, you can highlight:

  • Letter block;
  • Functional key block (F1, F4, etc.);
  • Block of additional numeric keypad.

In addition, of course, there are action keys (Shift, Ctrl).

In this article, we will look specifically at the optional numeric keypad. On some computers and laptops, it is allocated in a separate sector, on others it is in close proximity to the letter, and on others it is completely absent. Moreover, the latter option is typical only for laptops.

On the computer

Keyboard for personal computers usually more than laptops. Accordingly, manufacturers distribute the free space in such a way that the user is as comfortable as possible with all the keys. Therefore, the numeric keypad is often allocated to a separate sector.

In the photo, all the keys of the additional keyboard (on the right) are highlighted in a separate group. In the upper left corner of this group is the NumLock button (for different models location may vary). Pressing it turns on the numeric keypad.

When NumLock is off, the keys will behave differently. So, under the numbers 8, 4, 6 and 2 arrows are drawn. This means that these keys will work as normal directional buttons (which are located to the left of the number pad).

In addition, the keys with numbers 7, 9, 1, 3, 0 and "," are labeled with the names of the Home, PgUp, PgDown, End, Insert, Delete buttons, which can be found above the direction keys. When "NumLock" is off, these buttons will be responsible for the corresponding actions.

So enabling / disabling NumLock does not result in complete shutdown side keyboard, and to change the purpose of some keys.

Video: Using Extra Buttons

On laptop

On laptops, the numeric keypad is usually located closer to the letter block. This allows manufacturers to save on the size of the entire device.

Otherwise, enabling / disabling the numeric keys is done in the same way as on a computer keyboard. But it so happens that the sidebar of the number keys on the laptop is not.

In this case, the developers have positioned the number keys in a slightly different way. They are found on letterheads as optional.

Moreover, the number keys can be applied to other buttons. It depends on the publisher.

To switch the keyboard to the mode of using additional numeric buttons, you need to press a certain key combination. It may differ on different laptops. For example, in our case, you need to simultaneously press the Fn and Ins keys (since NumLock is written in blue on the Ins button).

In general, this action is no different from the usual pressing NumLock on the computer. Only in our case, when NumLock is off, the keys will print letters, and when it is on, the corresponding numbers and mathematical signs.

How to disable

Disabling the numeric keys on the side keyboard on the right (or on the letter key for some laptops) is done in the same way as enabling. Let's briefly describe the required actions:

  • if you have side keyboard, pressing the NumLock key will disable it (more precisely, switch to other functionality, as we indicated above).
  • If you don't have a side keyboard, look for the numbers on the letter keys. In order to disable these numbers (switch them to letters), you need to press a key combination, which may differ for different laptop models. Typically this is the Fn + [function key].

Possible problems and solutions

It may well be that enabling / disabling the side keyboard does not affect its operation in any way: you press NumLock, but you still cannot enter numbers. Or one specific button may not work. Let's consider each problem separately and try to find optimal solutions.

Side keypad with numbers does not work after turning on the computer

If you want a sidebar with numeric keys worked immediately after turning on the operating system, you need to change the corresponding setting in the BIOS. The first step is to restart (turn on) the computer and press the enter button in the BIOS menu. It can be Del, F12 or any other button, depending on the model of the computer (laptop). You can find out which key you need to press on the screen that appears immediately after turning on the device.

In the window that opens, go to the "Boot" tab. There you will find the "NumLock Key" option (it may have a different name, for example, "NumLock Enable"). Press Enter and toggle the value to On or Enabled. Go to the "Exit" tab and exit the BIOS, saving the changes.

The next time you turn on the computer, the side keyboard will work immediately.

Side digits on the right don't work

If the side numeric keypad doesn't work when you press NumLock (or another function key), the problem is in this key. The contact may have come off or the keyboard is clogged. One way or another, you will need the help of a specialist.

Before contacting the service center, it makes sense to check if something is really wrong with this or that button. This can be done using the on-screen keyboard.

To open the On-Screen Keyboard, which is built into Windows by default, open the Start menu. Click on "All Programs" and find the "Accessories" folder. It contains one more folder - " Special abilities". The program you are looking for is located here.

"On-screen keyboard" is a full-fledged substitute for the usual one. The keys in it are pressed with the left mouse button. To check if each individual numeric keypad button works, in the program window, click Options and select Enable numeric keypad.

Now click on the "NUMLOCK" button in the program interface, and then try entering numbers using the hardware side keyboard.

If numbers are entered, then the problem is specifically in the "NumLock" key. Contact the technician to clean the keyboard and check it is working properly.

By the way, using the On-Screen Keyboard program, you can work without a hardware one at all. For example, if you handed it over for repair. It will also help you if any keys are missing or inconveniently located.

Letters are typed instead of numbers

This issue may be familiar to laptop users. If your keyboard is typing a number when you press the letter button, then the "NumLock" mode is enabled. To turn it off, you need to press the key combination mentioned above. In addition, it may be such that the letter keys always print numbers after turning on the computer. In this case, disable the "NumLock Key" option in the BIOS. How to do this is also described above.

Wrong letters are printed

This problem is equally common on both computers and laptops. The most common cause of this keyboard behavior is a debris problem.

So, several keypress sensors could stick together or even fail after some liquid was spilled on the keyboard. Note that if your keyboard is typing the wrong letters, the reason is the same. In any case, you need to contact a specialist. It may well be that it will not be possible to repair the device at all. Then you have to buy a new one.

If you accidentally spill any liquid on the keyboard, it is better to immediately take it to a service center. Even if it works now, the malfunction may appear in weeks, or even months.

Always keep your computer or laptop clean. Wipe the screen and keyboard with a dry cloth or special wet wipes. This will help to preserve the health of the device now and save money on repairs in the future.

Specificity of working with gaming peripherals

A gaming keyboard is, of course, more expensive (sometimes much) than a regular one. It's not just about the brand, but also about the functionality.

Gamer keyboards have increased key responsiveness that can even be customized. In addition, there are special drivers for controlling such delicate professional equipment. In such programs, you can configure different keyboard shortcuts for one button (macros). This is often necessary for players in shooters or strategy games, when everything needs to be done as quickly as possible.

With macros, you can also assign some letter keys to enter numbers. This can come in handy for different occasions. For example, if you need to quickly change weapons in the game, or if the side keys on the right are broken.

Buying an additional keyboard

If your laptop does not have a side keyboard with numbers, and you are not comfortable using the letter keys, it makes sense to purchase an additional keyboard.

You can connect this small device to laptop via USB cable. The convenience of using such a keyboard is that it can be placed anywhere, even taken in hand, as if it were a familiar calculator. In addition, you can turn it off when it is unnecessary. This is convenient when using your laptop on the go.

There are also special additional keyboards for gamers. But in this case, they are usually intended for other functions than for entering numbers. These functions are configured in the driver.

Any problem with the side keyboard usually lies in enabling / disabling certain functions. If none of the suggestions in the article helped you, then something is wrong with the mechanical part of the device. In this case, you can only take it for repair. Either way, try to treat the keyboard with awe. Regular cleaning will help prevent a variety of problems, including device breakdown.

Hello everyone.

Today I am writing an instruction for those who do not have a keyboard on a laptop. I will describe the reasons why this could happen, how to try to solve this problem so that the keyboard works, I will show a temporary solution, how you can do without the keyboard and give some more tips.

Video: The keyboard does not work on a laptop

Testing the keyboard via BIOS

First of all, look at how the keyboard behaves when you turn on the laptop. Try to go to BIOS. When starting the laptop, immediately start pressing the Delete or F2 key (depending on the motherboard). If the entrance to the BIOS is completed, then the keyboard is working. You can walk through the BIOS menu and make sure that everything is in order with the keyboard.

Faulty keyboard

If the keyboard does not work in the BIOS either, then there is a possibility that it is completely out of order, but not a fact. Think, was it such that the keyboard was flooded with tea or beer for a couple of days? And if the keyboard worked in the BIOS, then this is most likely already software malfunction and you need to solve it through Windows.

Reinstalling Drivers

Click on the Computer section and open Properties. Next go to Device Manager.

Find the Keyboards section and delete everything under a clean one.

The driver will be removed! Now restart your laptop and check if the keyboard is working.

System Restore

It happens that some programs or we ourselves messed up in the system, installed something wrong, or, on the contrary, deleted important files and Windows now does not work stably. The keyboard on the laptop may also not work because of this. I suggest doing a system restore!

Open Start - Control Panel... Select the type of icon display Small icons and find the Recovery program.

We carry out Launching System Restore.

We select a restore point for about the date when the keyboard worked and click Next.

A rollback will be performed and the laptop will reboot!

In any case, for now, the text can be typed using virtual keyboard or as it is also called.

Open the search bar and enter a query (or Start - Specialist. possibilities-). Run the found program.

Now we can type text with it. For example, I opened a notepad, put the mouse cursor and began to click on the letters of the on-screen keyboard with the mouse. Typing went.

You can also do with search bar Yandex.

But I must tell you that not some sites already have their own on-screen keyboard. On home page Yandex it is to the right of the form.

Click there and such a beautiful keyboard is launched.

Naturally, it will only work on Yandex, to enter a query into the search bar.

By the way, Google also has its own screen, so if your keyboard does not work on your laptop, then at least you can find something on the Internet and type text into your notebook.

Connecting a USB keyboard

If it was not possible to restore the keyboard built into the laptop, then you can connect an external one. Yes Yes exactly! Keyboards that are designed for computers will easily fit into laptops as well. The main thing is to choose USB keyboard, because hardly any laptop today has a PS / 2 port. And here USB connector is on any laptop.

That's all. I hope by some of the options you have managed to solve the issue with the keyboard. See you in new lessons!

In this article, we have to figure out an important question: why does the keyboard not type? This phenomenon is not as rare as we would like. But you shouldn't be afraid of him. Problems with are resolved without too many problems. And only in some situations is it necessary to try hard to establish the functioning of the computer component. But for what reasons may the keyboard refuse to work? And what to do in this or that case?

Damaged connector

The first case is not very common, but it does occur. Especially on older computers. For laptops, this layout is relevant only when it comes to a separately connected keyboard.

What is it about? Why isn't the keyboard typing? The problem may lie in the equipment connection connector. It sometimes breaks or gets damaged. In this situation, the keyboard cannot be connected. If used old model(PS / 2 socket), it is advisable to change the equipment to USB. Or connect the device to another connector. You can also try to fix the jacks. But this technique will not give a long-term guarantee of the device's operation.

Drivers

Why isn't the keyboard typing? The next, already more common reason, is the lack of drivers for. Especially when it comes to multifunctional, with big amount additional buttons. If the device refused to work, it is recommended that the first thing to do is to reinstall the drivers for it. Or update them.

Typically, keyboards come with a CD with the appropriate software. Further And if the reason lay precisely in the drivers, then everything starts to work. You can additionally turn off and turn on the device after logging into operating system... But everything is not always as simple as it seems. After all, a computer is a device that can present a variety of surprises. And it's not always easy to fix them. So what other options for the development of events can be identified?

Clogging

Why isn't the keyboard typing? Sooner or later, this question begins to worry almost every user. This is especially true for those who do not monitor the computer and its components at all. The keyboard won't print some letters? What to do? If we are talking about a device that has worked properly for at least a month, we can only recommend one thing - to clean the component.

The keyboard is a clogging device. Dust, food debris, crumbs - it all stays between the buttons. And we are talking about laptops, and about stationary computers... Therefore, all keyboards need to be cleaned from time to time. At least once a year. Or as needed. It is also recommended not to eat in front of the monitor. This technique will allow you not to clog the connected device once again. By the way, this problem is the most common scenario.

Now it is clear why the keyboard does not print. Just pay attention to the fact that you should not clean yourself. Especially when it comes to a novice user. And even more so, it is not recommended to clean the keyboard from the laptop yourself. Better to take the input device to a service center. Keyboard cleaning services are offered almost everywhere. In literally a few hours, you can fix the problem that overtook the user. After cleaning, the keyboard will work at full strength.

Permutation

But these are not all options for the development of events. Sometimes it happens that the keyboard is typing the wrong letters. And in this situation it is very difficult to find an explanation for what is happening. After all, in fact, the device works. It's just not how it should be. There is only one reason why letters print numbers or not what is needed. This is an incorrect assembly of the device. If you take apart the keyboard, you will notice that each button has its own mechanism. The computer receives a signal from a certain key and prints this or that character. For the convenience of the user, these mechanisms are signed as buttons on the keyboard. If the latter are reversed, it appears that the machine is printing the wrong characters.

Therefore, in this situation, there is only one solution - to correctly assemble the keyboard. That is, place the mechanisms under each key in the desired order. It is very problematic to do this on your own. Therefore, it is best to take the gadget to a service center. If you do not want to think once again why the keyboard does not print, you should not wipe and wash this component on your own. Often, the problem with the wrong arrangement of buttons happens after self-cleaning. Not the most dangerous, but also not a very pleasant moment.

Incorrect assembly

Keyboard buttons not working? How to be? First, don't panic. Secondly, analyze your last actions with this device. In most cases, the user himself becomes the culprit of problems with the components connected to the computer. What to do if If the user tried to figure out the device on his own, it is recommended to immediately take it to the service center.

The reason is incorrect assembly of the input device. Most likely, when the user tried to assemble the keyboard, an important contact went away somewhere. This is a common occurrence to be aware of. Eliminate this problem you can do it yourself. But users point out that in inept hands the keyboard will not work. Unless it will be completely broken. And the craftsmen usually get it right the first time and disassemble the device and assemble it so that it works fully and without interruption.

Marriage

What if the keyboard does not print? Much depends on the situation. If we are not talking about a new device, then the above options for the development of events may well be the reason for the refusal of the component from work. But what about when the conversation is about the keyboard you just bought? If all the drivers have been installed, the problem most likely has only one reason - a marriage. And here only will help complete replacement keyboard. It is recommended that you immediately contact the store where the device was purchased. There it will be possible to exchange. Otherwise, you will have to buy a new gadget.

Incompatibility

What if the keyboard doesn't work? It is required to find out why the connected device refused to perform its functions. In fact, only in rare cases are serious accidents caused by users. More often than not, you can solve all problems yourself.

Why isn't the keyboard typing? The whole point may be in the incompatibility of the device with the operating system. This problem has appeared quite recently. Most often, it is encountered by users with Windows 10. With this operating system, old models of this problem are not observed. Yes, the keyboard has its own too minimum requirements... And you should pay attention to them. Because you will either have to change the device in the end, or reinstall the operating system to one that is compatible with the gadget.

Viruses

Keyboard buttons not working? This device refused to work at all? If all of the above cases do not fit, you might think about the last, rarest scenario - an infection of the operating system. Viruses are the main enemies of the stable operation of computers. They can affect not only the software, but also the connected devices. For example, under their negative influence, the keyboard either does not print, or displays the wrong characters, or it even puts down several letters / numbers at a time.

There are two ways out: reinstalling the operating system from scratch or disinfecting the computer from the corresponding infection. In the first case, you will have to completely format HDD, only then reinstall the OS. And the second option, as a rule, is not effective enough. For this reason, it is recommended that you save all data and reinstall the operating system on your computer. So the virus will disappear 100%.
