To test the Core i3-4130, I used the processor benchmarks WinRAR (compression), Cinebench (rendering 3D graphics), x264 HD Benchmark (video conversion) and TrueCrypt (encryption), as well as games Thief, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Metro: Last Light, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. In-game tests were conducted with both Intel HD Graphics 4400 Integrated Graphics Accelerator and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti discrete graphics.

Synthetic benchmarks

Among the results of processor benchmarks, it is worth noting an almost threefold increase in the multi-threaded WinRAR test compared to the single-threaded one. The virtual cores of the Core i3-4130 have proven their remarkable potential in practice.

Average frame rates in games

With heavy games Thief, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Metro: Last Light, the processor C ore i3-4130 coped well even with FullHD-resolution and ultra-graphics settings - an average of 25 fps. If a more powerful video card were in place of the GeForce GTX 750 Ti, the result would most likely be even higher. At low graphics settings, the Core i3-4130 easily coped with the aforementioned three games - over 60 fps.

But for Intel HD Graphics 4400, the trio of heavyweight games became a stumbling block - at best 15 fps, and then only at HD resolution and very low graphics settings. Therefore, it was decided to test this integrated graphics accelerator in lightweight Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive games. With FullHD resolution and minimum graphics settings, the frame rate was 30 fps, which would be enough for single-player games, but not enough for dynamic multiplayer games. Fortunately, lowering the resolution to HD allowed us to raise the frame rate in Dota 2 and CS: GO to comfortable 50 and 70 fps, respectively.

By the way, our test motherboard MSI Z97 Gaming 5 allowed us to use the OC Genie function to increase the frequency of the Intel HD Graphics 4400 from 1150 to 1500 MHz. Thanks to this, the frame rate in games increased by an average of 7 percent. But disperse yourself Core processor The i3-4130 is a thankless task, since its multiplier is locked, and raising the bus frequency will not achieve a good result.

When using a be quiet! For Dark Rock 3, the Core i3-4130 was idle at 30 ° C, while warming up like hell with the LinX app was 68 ° C. When using the boxed Intel cooler, the temperatures were 33 and 83 ° C, respectively (no throttling was observed). In games, the temperature of the Core i3-4130 was 10 degrees lower.

Testing technique

We tried to bring this testing as close as possible to the real situation with the selection and purchase of new components. Turbo Boost technology remained active for processors that support it, and the clock speed was not artificially limited. This allows you to demonstrate the real level of performance that a user can expect by purchasing a processor of the Core i5 / i7 family without the K index. ASUS boards Maximus VII Hero were reset to default values ​​(except for the frequency of the RAM). Processors with an unlocked multiplier were additionally tested at 4500 MHz, which was chosen as the average overclocking level of Haswell CPUs.

Video cards acted as constants. Frequency circuits of MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G (1216-1329 / 7012 MHz) and Gigabyte GV-N960WF2OC-2GD (1216-1367 / 7012 MHz) are left unchanged. Similar peak Boost values ​​can be seen with most similar solutions on the market. But the frequency potential of the EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti FTW ACX Cooling has been adjusted due to the high factory overclocking. The resulting frequencies have been reduced to 1189-1254 / 5400 MHz.

All test applications used a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is the most common today (according to the Steam service). Fps indicators were measured using in-game benchmarks or using the Fraps v.3.5.99 utility. Test scenes where measurements were taken can be viewed below. Each test was repeated in several runs to minimize possible error. Indicators of the minimum and average fps are shown in the graphs.

Maximum values ​​are selected for all available graphics settings. Additionally, the fps_max 0 command was written in the console to remove the built-in frame rate limitation. The test scene depicts the start of the game, the starting control of the runes and the breakdown of the heroes along the lanes.

Maximum graphics quality using FXAA anti-aliasing. Replay recorded on current version 9.6 and includes all the key aspects of the game mechanics: changing positions, finding a target, aiming and hitting an object.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor


Since to obtain a comfortable fps level with ultra-graphics settings in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, more than 6 GB of video memory will be required, it was decided to limit ourselves to the Very High preset. The frame rate was measured based on the results of the in-game benchmark.
