Touch displays have gradually migrated from the segment of hi-end phones for a limited audience to the sphere of mass models. To exaggerate, the presence of a touch screen is not so amazing now, it can be compared with the support of the MP3 format in phones a few years ago. However, the WOW effect of using a model with a touch-sensitive display definitely remains today. This is a different presentation of information, and a different set of capabilities compared to non-touch devices.
The first phones (namely, phones, not smartphones or communicators) with touch screens were very expensive, which prevented them from becoming the property of a mass buyer. The KP500 model from LG was a breakthrough in pricing of touch devices: strong sales of this device were a confirmation of the demand for a touch display in phones under $300. Since this particular niche was relatively free, Samsung, another South Korean manufacturer, did not fail to release a symmetrical answer - the GT-S5230 model.
Design
The phone can be described in one word - compact. If you cut your eyes into the study of the documentation, you can refute this epithet, but the model is perceived precisely as compact. Perhaps this effect is achieved due to the thinness of the case.
In addition, people who took the phone in their hands for the first time were surprised at its lightness. It is possible that this is due to the perception of the touch screen as an attribute of something technological, and therefore certainly overall and heavy. The device lies comfortably in the hand, it can be operated with one hand or two.
The body of the model is made mainly of plastic. Both the back and the front are smeared with fingerprints, but the odd dot pattern on the back doesn't really catch your eye. The front panel is not provided with such masking.
Separate parts - the frame of the front panel, a small insert under the display - are made of metal.
There are very few control elements on the case. These are the traditional keys for accepting / rejecting a call and returning, located under the screen, a camera key and a display lock on the right side, a volume rocker (vibration strength control is also available) on the left.
The interface connector is located directly below the volume keys. This is a new connector for the company, similar to what we saw in the S8300 phone. Accessories from previous Samsung models will not work.
Display
The installed matrix is made using resistive technology. This is somewhat surprising, since capacitive displays have been favored lately. In this regard, it is interesting to remember that in LG KP500, the direct competitor of the reviewed model, the matrix is also resistive.
It is up to everyone to decide how successful the choice of technology is, today you can meet adherents of both technologies. Of the advantages of the resistive matrix is the response not only to pressing with the fingertips, but also to third-party objects. The stylus, however, is not included in the package.
Display resolution - WQVGA (240 x 400 pixels). It's becoming standard on mid-range touchscreen phones.
Color rendition is high-quality, shades are transmitted naturally. However, it's not the best display we've seen. The brightness of the backlight turned out to be more than enough, but in direct sunlight the picture still fades.
Interface, functionality
The device is based on a software platform that is standard for Samsung phones with touch screens. In idle mode, widgets can be placed on the screen. The set of widgets is standard for Samsung. These are several variations of displaying the date and time, links to frequently used functions and online services (weather, news), reduced versions of notes, player, radio.
What's new in the S5230 is that the screen with widgets does not scroll up and down, but left and right. This allows you to create three independent sets of widgets that will not take up much space, overlap each other.
To move between pages, just swipe to the side. For convenience, three small squares are placed at the bottom of the display, conventionally indicating the pages of the main screen. They help determine which way to turn the “pages”.
A pleasant surprise was also that working with widgets is fast, processing does not take much time, there are no “brakes” observed. More recently, we have seen how the work with widgets in the more expensive Samsung S8300 was quite leisurely. Apparently, the speed of work depends not so much on the performance of the hardware, but on the firmware.
Since the phone does not have a physical keyboard unit, typing is carried out exclusively through the touch screen. There are several input methods to choose from. First of all, this virtual keyboard, which copies the 12-key layout. The virtual keys are quite large, it is easy to hit them even with your fingers, you can not be afraid of false pressings.
When the case is turned to the left, the accelerometer is activated, and the keyboard is automatically redrawn to the QWERTY layout. The keys are no longer so large; when clicked, a small window pops up to help determine which icon was clicked.
An alternative typing method is handwriting. You can write by hand either in a specific area or across the entire display. In turn, a separate area can be made the same for all characters, or it can be divided into small sectors for uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers. Supports recognition of Russian characters. In this situation, it is more convenient to use something a la a stylus, but it is quite possible to write with your finger.
The main menu is a standard 3 x 4 grid. In menu mode, the Contacts tab at the bottom of the display changes to Photo Contacts. The interface of this item resembled the "Contacts" tab in the LG Arena interface. For the colorful design of this menu, you will need several photos of the most frequently used contacts.
Own memory in the phone is limited to 100 MB, additionally provided for the installation of memory cards format microSD. The file manager has a separate item "Memory status", which describes in detail what type of files the memory is occupied (the memory of the phone and the card are shown separately).
Folders and files can be displayed as a list or as small icons, the display method is changed by pressing one virtual key. The accelerometer automatically rotates photos.

The model left a very pleasant impression. For the money that the Samsung GT-S5230 is valued at, you can get modern phone with touch screen. The last detail was successfully used by the creators of the software: at its expense, the interface of the device was improved, widgets that are popular today have been added.
Finding obvious advantages or disadvantages of the phone compared to the LG KP500 is somewhat problematic - both models offer similar design and functionality for the same price. The choice between them, most likely, will occur at the level of personal preferences of the buyer.
