Samsung Galaxy A3 - Specifications. Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) - Specifications Samsung Galaxy A3 Phones

The Galaxy A series can be considered unique not only for Samsung, but in general for the Android smartphone market. Usually, manufacturers try to cram more powerful hardware into smartphones of the middle price category, and their design is done on a leftover principle. In the first generation of Galaxy A devices, everything was exactly the opposite: the appearance turned out to be interesting, but the filling disappointed. Technically weak smartphones made of metal and glass managed to receive a lot of negative reviews from the press, and nevertheless, these devices were popular. This is understandable and even expected: there are not many smartphones with an interesting design for 20-25 thousand rubles; "Mods" who do not want to spend money on a flagship model, there is not much to choose from.

Now the Galaxy A family has been updated, and the leitmotif of this "update" has become an improvement in the technical characteristics of devices, since the capabilities of previous gadgets did not even reach the unspoken middle-class standards. The new generation has solved this problem - at least "on paper" Galaxy characteristics A3 and A5 look very good. What are they in practice? We will answer this question after thorough testing of both devices. It is noteworthy that the previous A3 and A5 remain on sale along with the new ones, while the older Galaxy A7 of 2016 ousted its parent from the shelves. We will talk about it in detail another time.

⇡ Appearance and ergonomics

Of course, Samsung fans will appreciate that the current Galaxy A series smartphones are very similar to the flagship Galaxy S6. This was achieved through the use of similar proportions of the case, a close radius of rounding of the corners and identical color solutions for the flagships and for the middle peasants. Indeed, confusing the 2016 Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy S6 with each other is easy, even from a small distance.

However, most of all new items with the flagship model have in common the use of tempered glass Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on the back panel. The previous generation Galaxy A had a metal back, the new one had a glass one. So, perhaps, more beautiful, and Gorilla Glass 4, as we know from the experience of communicating with other smartphones, is resistant to minor damage and scratches: you can carry devices in one pocket with keys and coins. But you should not drop them - the glass will most likely break after the first fall. This is perhaps the main and only drawback of using glass instead of metal. By the way, the front panel of the devices is also covered with the same glass - with an oleophobic coating and an anti-reflective filter.

The Galaxy A3 and A5 themselves are very similar to each other. The main difference, of course, is the size. The "five" turned out to be larger: its display is half an inch larger, which could not but affect the weight - it weighs 155 grams, while the "treshka" is only 132 grams. Hands, frankly, do not get tired of both smartphones - their mass is acceptable. The younger model turned out to be thinner - 6.9 against 7.3 mm. In general, Samsung Galaxy A3 is compact smartphone convenient to use with one hand; to reach all four corners of the A5 display, the device will have to be shifted in the hand, like most modern Android gadgets.

Positioning

Samsung's A-series was created for the middle segment, this is the second generation of devices that received the 2016 prefix, that is, we should expect A3 2017, A3 2018 and so on. The first generation became a bestseller in sales, it was chosen not so much for its characteristics as for appearance, body materials and overall build quality, as well as for the brand. Chinese smartphones little-known companies for the same money can offer a larger set of characteristics, but the materials of the case may differ for the worse, the operating time will not be better, and in general it is a lottery. Sales have proven that most of the buyers think like this and are guided by well-known brands in order to get a guarantee, as well as understand what exactly they bought.

The sales of the previous A3 model showed that this device is chosen by people when they need a solution with an average performance, primarily for calls, SMS, social networks, and the size of such a device is very important, they do not want a large screen diagonal, since they do not spend hours on the net, do not play with three-dimensional toys for hours on end. Another wish that was expressed was the working time, so that the phone could hold out for a day or two under heavy load. And in this aspect, the A3 2015 was successful, buyers considered it simple and reliable, hence the maximum sales in its price segment.

Samsung Galaxy A3 2015

Not without complaints, some did not always have enough performance, some of the young A3 users wanted to run races with good graphics, and the speed of the phone made these attempts not the best thing to do. They tried to fix all these points in the updated 2016 model.

In terms of positioning, A3 2016 is also oriented towards young people and children (the first high-quality phone for adult life), those who are not looking for a large diagonal and mainly use the phone for calls, SMS, the Internet and social networks, and without fanaticism and being in them for hours. The fact that this device has the minimum diagonal for the A-series, and it is equal to 4.7 inches and is comparable to the iPhone, also suggests that most consumers take this form factor with a bang, and the size pleases them. This is a very good solution for everyday use by ordinary consumers, those who do not have any transcendental requests. It has several drawbacks that result from use cases, and we will dwell on them in more detail as part of the review.

Design, dimensions, controls

The entire A-series is built from the same materials, the models look the same, even the color schemes are repeated. The only difference is in their sizes, which follow from the diagonal of the screen, while the thickness of the cases is the same for all.

The design of the line is directly borrowed from the flagship of the company - Galaxy S6. Metal case, in which glass covers not only the screen, but also rear panel... The glass has a slight curvature, this is the trendy 2.5D in the last year, the glass itself is Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

Considering that the device is aimed at the widest possible audience, it comes out in four colors at once - gold, black, white, rose-gold.

Each color has a metallic sheen, plays well in the sun. There are handprints on the rear panel, they are clearly visible indoors, those who are sick of it will be unhappy with the phone. Small bevels of the panels are pleasant in the hands, but they do not create a sliding effect on a table or an inclined surface, the device lies well.

Galaxy A3 2015 and A3 2016

The phone measures 134.5x65.2x7.3 mm and weighs 132 grams. It is compact, fits well in the hand, and the only negative point may be that some people find it slippery. As a rule, this is an absentee judgment, since the device does not slip even in wet hands. But it is possible that someone's personality is such that the apparatus slips. I have never seen such a thing.

On the top and bottom there is a microphone, there is a noise cancellation system that works well in noisy conditions.

Two separate volume keys are on the left side, the on / off button is on the right. There is also a slot for two SIM-cards (nano), instead of one of them you can install a memory card.

On the rear panel you can see a 13-megapixel camera, it protrudes above the body, which does not interfere with your life. Nearby is a LED flash. At the bottom there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a speaker hole.

You will see the proximity and light sensor above the screen, but below it there is a physical key, on the sides there are two touchscreens. They have blue backlighting. Unfortunately, this model lacks a fingerprint sensor, the A5 and A7 have this sensor. For those who are used to password-protecting their device, this will be a certain inconvenience. You get used to the sensor quickly and then you can no longer use the devices without it, it becomes inconvenient. If you did not have such a phone and you are used to entering numbers in the old fashioned way, or graphic key, then you will not feel the problem. For example, my daughter has been using A3 2015 for almost a year, the updated model has become convenient for her, no complaints or problems. But it was very difficult for me without a sensor.

Another point is the absence of an LED indicator of events, it is simply not there. It's a trifle, but I would like to see such a sensor, it can come in handy in different situations.

Display

The technical characteristics of the screen are as follows: 4.7 inches, 1280x720 pixels (312 ppi), SuperAMOLED, Corning Gorilla Glass 4, with 2.5D effect. In its class, it is one of best screens, even if it does not have the highest resolution, but with such a diagonal it is enough for the eyes. It is very interesting to hear complaints that people lack the resolution of such a screen and it seems small to them. This is something psychological, since the Retina screen on the iPhone 6s with the same diagonal has a comparable resolution - 1334x750 pixels. At the same time, the quality of the screen in A3 2016 is better in many aspects, the picture is livelier and brighter.

In A3 2016, it is almost impossible to find fault with the screen, it is of very high quality and in all scenarios of use shows Good work, whether it's reading texts or working in the bright sun. Traditionally, you can set different color display options in the settings (Adaptive screen, AMOLED movie, AMOLED photo, main). Those who prefer muted, natural colors can get them. Those who want a brighter picture are also able to choose it. This is a matter of your choice, not a manufacturer's constraints.

Automatic brightness control works correctly, I use it all the time and have no problems. Of the advantages of using it, I note that on the street in this mode the screen becomes readable, in manual mode the backlight brightness is limited to lower values.

The A3 display is one of the best on the market and has no direct competitors in its class. For the price of A3 2016, you can't get anything like this from other companies.

Battery

In this device, the battery capacity is 2300 mAh (Li-Pol). During the test, we always look at how long a video device can play (AVI, FullHD, MX Player, maximum brightness), A3 2016 works up to 13.5 hours. And this result is quite comparable with what we got for the 2016 A5, they behave the same, despite the different screen diagonal and battery capacity.

My daughter charges the previous A3 device about once every two days, she gets about 3.5 hours of screen work, a minimum of voice calls, but active communication on the network, watching cartoons. And this is a good result.

For her, A3 2016 was able to provide three days of work instead of two. That is, the profile itself has not changed, but the device began to work longer. And this is typical for the entire A-series of 2016, its operating time in different scenarios has increased, and this is very noticeable.

There is also a power saving mode, when the backlight of the screen, the frequency of the processor are limited, in this mode many will not experience problems with the operation of the device, but the operating time will increase by at least 20 percent. In the maximum power saving mode, everything turns gray on the screen, and the device can provide hours of operation even with a small charge.

This device may well work for 2-3 days for those users who are his target audience... An interesting model that works for a long time.

Memory, RAM, performance

The characteristics of the chipset are as follows - 4-core Exynos 7578 processor, frequency up to 1.5 GHz, graphics coprocessor Mali T720 MP2. In synthetic tests, this processor performed well, but as expected, there are no records. A definite gain in comparison with the previous A3, in which there was a Snapdragon 410 and it was noticeably weaker in all tasks, including games.

The built-in memory in the device is 16 GB (10.7 GB is available to the user), but there is also support for memory cards up to 128 GB.

The RAM is 1.5 GB, which is enough for all typical tasks. I would like to get more memory, but this would increase the cost of the phone. Therefore, the memory was limited, but for such a diagonal and resolution, the memory is enough for the eyes. Also, the stake was made on the fact that a typical user of such a model does not run dozens of heavy applications. But even if he does this, they are unloaded from memory, and no problems arise.

Subjectively A3 c standard interface works a little faster than the A5 and A7. But in third-party programs older models are noticeably faster. This is due to different chipsets and hardware optimization for different tasks, customization for different scenarios of using the phone.

Communication capabilities

Everything is pretty typical, USB version 2, there is support for NFC, Ant +, 802.11 b / g / n only in the 2.4 GHz band (older models work in dual bands), BT 4.1, the built-in LTE modem supports LTE Cat.4.

Camera

All cameras in the 2016 lineup for the A-series are the same, which is not bad, as it provides the same image quality, no matter which camera you choose.

The front camera does not have autofocus, but has a resolution of 5 megapixels, which is not bad, it is light-sensitive (f / 1.9).

The main camera is 13-megapixel, it is similar in characteristics to the cameras that were in the flagships of last year, gives good quality pictures, as you can see for yourself. The main improvement over the previous season is that the shots are pretty good in the dark. A number of modes that are on flagships are missing, there is no HDR mode for full resolution (only for 8 megapixels). But in general, the camera has grown a lot compared to the previous generation and will satisfy even the most discerning user.

Software

The model went on sale on Android 5.1.1, but at the end of spring it will receive an update to Android 6. Inside we see a light version of TouchWiz, the same was on the Samsung S6, most of the menus and settings are the same. You can watch a detailed video that describes all the nuances of this shell.

Applications such as S Health, child mode and others, even if they are not preinstalled.

When using KNOX, you can install any program in two copies, for example, install two messenger whatsapp and use them for each SIM card (two numbers, two messengers). You can even correspond with yourself. Exactly the same trick can be done with any software, no phone allows you to simultaneously work with two messengers on one device with different numbers, this is a unique feature from Samsung.

Impressions

The call quality is excellent, the ringtone volume is above average, you can hear it from your clothes or bag. The vibration alert is average in strength. The noise cancellation system works well, and there are no complaints about it either.

If the 2016 Galaxy A5 could be compared in price with the old, but actively selling iPhone 5s, and the models look the same in terms of the image component, then its little brother should be compared with other devices. I doubt that it can be compared with the same iPhone, the question is not in the screen (it is just different), but in the perception of models in this price group. It is a balanced solution for the mass consumer from large company which has the expected guaranteed quality, no surprises.

For those who want to compare the A3 2015 and 2016, I suggest watching our video, even with a noticeable difference in cost and a completely different aesthetics of these devices, I recommend looking at the A3 2016, it is a fundamentally different level in terms of performance and perception of the model.

To close the question of how the 2016 A-series models differ, we have a separate video where I compare them and point out the differences between the devices.

There are many new and old models on the market in this price segment. It makes no sense to compare this device with everyone else, I will try to show only the most significant models that fall under the target group that considers such smartphones. Perhaps I'll start with the Sony Z1 Compact, this is a rather old and well-known smartphone with a 4.3-inch screen diagonal (the resolution is the same, but IPS matrix). To my subjective taste, the screen loses, and much, but this can be said about almost any model in this class compared to A3 2016. Of the advantages - the former flagship of Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipsets, 2 GB of RAM, 21-megapixel camera, quality which is comparable and the gain is only due to the permission. The front camera is terrible, its resolution is 2 megapixels. You can look in the direction of the Z3 Compact, it falls into our category in terms of size, but the price is noticeably higher, it falls into the A5 level.

This device cannot be found on a wide sale, but if you search, you can find it at a comparable or even lower price. Of the minuses - old Android version, the need to find a third-party assembly. But in general, a very interesting solution, plus there is protection against water (it may disappear over time, this is a sore spot for Sony).

You can look at side of Huawei P8 Lite, but the aesthetics of the device is completely different, it is made of plastic, and it feels too much. The screen is also worse, IPS, 5 inches diagonal, but 2 GB of RAM, an 8-core processor, but a small battery, which also shows the worst result in real life.

At a cost in the range of 19-21 thousand rubles, depending on trading network this device turned out to be very successful. The recommended retail price is 21 thousand rubles, everything that is lower can already be considered a pleasant discount. The first weeks of sales showed that the device is in high demand, just like the previous model a year ago. I really like the entire A-series, but this particular model lacks only one thing - a fingerprint sensor, then it would not have been worth the price. Compact, made of good materials, with good time work. But there can be no perfect phone, and so here. For its audience, this is an excellent device without any discounts and assumptions. It is worth paying close attention to.
