Like any other device of the company, iPad mini will instantly evoke in you either the desire to give money, press the tablet to your chest and run away without looking back, or burning hatred. There are a lot of people who do not accept the games of the company with the design. Many people believe that the popularization of complex technology does not carry anything good and computers, smartphones, tablets should remain the lot of guys REALLY ASSESSING. Well, Apple continues to bring this technology to every home. Let's say I don't think any girl would seriously want to try a Windows tablet. Because it’s unfashionable, because it’s difficult, because it’s not heard by millions of people - even those who don’t know how to use a computer have heard about the iPad. I am silent about tablets with Windows. And Android is not far behind, smartphones are one thing, but tablets are still mostly a pitiful sight. This also applies to runtime, displays, and performance. In an article about the announcement of the iPad mini, I wrote about the reasons that probably prompted Apple to release this product. You can read all the lyrics there, but here let's talk about a specific gadget.
As with the iPod mini, I want to point out Apple's triviality. It would seem, why not put the EarPods in the kit right away? After all, it is clear that a person will use a tablet, including for music, and for conversations in Skype or FaceTime. The obscure tradition of not adding a headset to the kit began with the first iPad and continued this year. You will either have to buy the headset separately or use what you have. I would recommend the EarPods, apparently, there are some settings and they make the sound of the headphones paired with the tablet very good. However, this applies to both the iPhone and iPod.
The box is very small, made of cardboard, half the size of a regular iPad. Most resembles a Kindle box. And the tablet itself most of all resembles an e-book, at first it is generally unusual to perceive it as an iPad. Convenient to hold with one hand, fits easily into a jacket pocket or even into the back pocket of jeans.
Naturally, this is very convenient, especially for those people who often use the tablet on public transport. It's not just about where the iPad mini can be hidden. When you read a book or play while holding the device with both hands, it is not very visible. Especially if it's a black mini. The body is completely black, and rear end, and a frame around the display. From a distance you will not understand what it is. Note that the case here is unibody, made of aluminum, the metal pleasantly cools the hand. The back is matte, the display is covered with glass with an oleophobic coating. The prints are clearly visible both on the front and back, although the black color masks well. For two days of active use, there are no scratches yet. I personally really like the design, a little thing that seems to be not needed, but I want to have it at hand - although I have no idea how to fit mini into the ecosystem. Considering that there is both a regular iPad and a MacBook Air.
The device is available in two colors, black and white, I saw both, I like black more, but white too. In general, it is not white, the frame around the display is of this color, and the back is silver.
It resembles the design of iPhone 5. It seems to me that this option is clearly for girls. The version with a radio module has a plastic antenna cap on the back, while the version with Wi-Fi has a metal body.
On the bottom of the case there are speaker holes (or speakers), a Lightning connector, on top - a 3.5 mm connector, a microphone. The exact dimensions are 200 x 134.7 x 7.2 mm, the weight is 308 grams. The version with a radio module weighs 312 grams.
The volume of the speakers is sufficient for listening to music or watching videos, but it is better to use a headset.
Display
For a start - the facts, the display diagonal is 7.87 inches, the resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels. At the presentation, everything related to the resolution was carefully avoided, still, in the Retina times, to show a "revolutionary" gadget with a conventional screen.
Now the lyrics. The most sore point of the device is the display. As an avid Apple techie, I can think of a lot of excuses for the screen and the company, but ... But really, if you've used an iPad with Retina, you'll know right away. The display is disgusting here. Bad. The guys at Apple taught us to see beautiful letters, as if drawn on the screen. They taught us to enjoy the sharpness and brightness. And now I see like slightly blurry letters on the mini screen. I watch a movie, but my brain is busy with something else, namely a comparison with a regular iPad, where the same movie looks an order of magnitude better. I'm not talking about photos and browsing in Safari.
I understand everything, in fact, a new segment for Apple, in fact, a test of the pen in an unknown area, it is not clear whether it will or will not work (apparently, it has gone). With Retina, the price would probably be different. There is nothing to scare away users. From a business point of view, everything is correct.
This is also true from the point of view that people who have not used an iPad with Retina do not notice the catch. I do not mean those who saw in pictures and then go broke on the Internet on the topic of a bad Apple. And those to whom iPad with Retina really helps in business. He specially invited several owners of such tablets to evaluate the tablet, at first admiration for the appearance, at first they say about the display that it is not bad, then they already notice: "It is a pity that it is not Retina."
Indeed, it is a pity.
Control
The placement of controls is traditional for iOS devices, under the display is the Home button, on top is the on / off button, on the right is the volume control and the mute lever (it also prohibits image rotation). The main control is the display, just like in other Apple devices, it is instantly addictive even for those who are used to dealing with buttons. The management is very good here. And given the size and weight of the device, it is now much easier for both the child and the girls to play or use the programs. Although, with the fairer sex, everything is a little more complicated. For example, my girlfriend noted that she would never change a regular iPad for a mini - yes, her tablet weighs more, but there is a larger display, and this important point(uses iPad for work). I think many will share this opinion. I am personally captivated by the compactness of the iPad mini, which is really great, but after Retina I can't look at the display without shuddering.
As you know, there are very narrow bezels around the display. Accordingly, if you hold the device in one hand, then pressing with the edge of your thumb, you could launch some programs. Apple came up with a solution, the areas next to the frame do not respond to pressing, or rather, you need to hit exactly the icon. In life, problems do not arise from outside, I did not notice that mini was somehow different in terms of control from the big brothers.
Memory and modifications
There are six modifications in total, the main differences are in the presence of 4G, well, and the traditional Apple memory division, 16/32/64 GB. Strictly speaking, there are not even six modifications, but nine, since the iPad mini A1454 is equipped with a module that supports the following standards: GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), UMTS / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz), LTE (Bands 4 and 17). And iPad mini A1455 supports CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900, 2100 MHz), GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), UMTS / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz), LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5 , 13, 25). Apparently, LTE will not work in Russia.
Food
The stated working time is 10 hours in normal mode, and the characteristics do not specifically say what exactly can be done, the description is vague "Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music". The device holds a charge well, that is, you will not have such a surprise as when using a tablet with Android, spent an hour in the car fully charged, and suddenly ten percent was gone. Here run times are controlled and predictable. Maybe ten hours is not worth counting on, but nine hours is quite possible. Do not forget only about the brightness, keeping it maximum is hardly worth it, it is quite comfortable to work with the device in any conditions, even if the brightness slider is set to half.
Curiously, the bundle comes with the same AC adapter as with the iPhone 5, rather than the old one as with a regular iPad. In any case, it will take about four hours to fully charge. You can charge from both USB and network adapter... This is another device that uses the new Lightning connector. You know, this may seem ridiculous, but many might think that third-party companies earned more on accessories for Apple equipment. Naturally, this is a wrong view of things, the company and before the advent of Lightning made millions selling original cables, adapters, cradles, power supplies and other add-ons. For the use of Lightning, the company named several motives, this is both compactness and reliability, but let's not forget that Apple always tries to tailor clothes on its own. In this case, these clothes are a huge market for accessories, billions of dollars and hundreds of companies. Note that Apple reminded us well who's boss. Want to do things for a new connector? We are going to the conference together. Hearing about the chips in the cable and features. We write it down. We pay. Or we don’t pay, it’s not clear yet. We produce accessories. We get the right to the inscription "Made for iPhone (iPad, iPod)" on the packaging. We get the right to be in the Apple Store. Left-right. Left-right. Are you used to the old connector? Lots of fakes? Funny people make millions on cables for two cents? Press everyone, build, remind who and what.
I want to note that only Apple consumers forgive such tricks. For example, for the time being, the same consumers poured tubs of slop on the well-known firm Sony every time the company tried to come up with something of their own. Take at least WP-port for Walkman players. Well, or some other pampering.
Personally, I have come to terms with Lightning. One iPad cable with regular connector. One for iPhone 5. An adapter bought for the occasion. And one more, with a long cable. We must somehow get used to living in a new way! Left-right, left-right.
Operating system and performance

In the screenshots you can see which toys I ran, none of them had any problems. But in terms of launch speed, and in general, an ordinary iPad (as it is called, "third") still seems to me better.

There is a 5 MP camera behind, sorry again, the weather in Moscow is disgusting, that's why it's dark in the pictures. There is autofocus, backlight, video recording in HD (1080p), focusing on whatever you specify. The camera works quickly, there are no complaints here. I think the pictures are pretty good. Naturally, the camera is much more suitable for shooting than a regular iPad, if only because of its diminutive size.

I will not even write how much the device costs in Russia now - once again Apple pretended that our market, it seems, does not exist. This means that you will not have an iPad mini supply either. I'm not campaigning in any way, but Apple has again got a charming gadget that is no match for its competitors. The same iPad, only more convenient. Maybe mini will be your first Apple device. Well, then everything goes according to a familiar scenario. Rejection of Windows. Replacing the access point. The person does not seek or choose anything else (and is not present on forums or in discussions) and is ready to forgive Apple for any pranks.

P.S. I really don't think the Nexus 7 will pass for a competitor. Any other Android tablet. They can be cheaper, yes. But then it's better to immediately buy thousands for three of a reader with a TFT display - savings, versatility, comfort. Want a tablet? A normal tablet, working for a long time, beautiful, with a bunch of sensible programs in a company store? Then only iPad, no matter which one, even mini, even maxi. There are no alternatives yet.
