The fantastic foldable Samsung Galaxy X is pictured for the first time from all angles. Samsung X10? the first pancake is not always lumpy

The line of SAMSUNG X10 laptops based on Intel technology Centrino featured on Russian market in May 2003, was first shown at the March CeBIT 2003 exhibition. Not long before this event, numerous premieres of these notebooks took place in most European countries, as well as in China and Hong Kong. Thus, SAMSUNG series The X10 appeared almost immediately after the announcement of Centrino technology.

At first sight

The first thing that catches your eye when you look at the SAMSUNG X10 laptop is its original, stylish design. Unlike laptops of this class of domestic manufacturers, which for the most part are made on the same MITAC platform and differ from each other only in logos, the SAMSUNG X10 laptop has a unique, inimitable design. The laptop is made in a silver case with a metallic tint, and, apparently, made of a lightweight durable alloy. The quality of the paint coating of the case seems to be quite reliable, in any case, you can be sure that after a while the case will not be scratched. Of course, to reduce the uniqueness of the design of SAMSUNG X10 laptops only to stylish outward appearance it would be wrong. The advantages of this model are its ultra-thin body and low weight, which is combined with high performance and functionality. With the size of the LCD matrix in 14.1 inches (working resolution 1024x768 pixels), the thickness of the model does not exceed 23.8 mm, and the weight is 1.8 kg.

It should be borne in mind that in their own functionality a laptop can quite compete with a full-size workstation (see Table 1).

The secret of such a thin case is that the laptop uses an LCD display with a thickness of no more than 5.2 mm and a combo DVD / CD-RW drive with a thickness of 9.5 mm of our own production.

We note right away that the laptop has passed all the necessary stages of Intel certification, that is, it is rightfully considered a laptop based on Intel Centrino technology. Recall that in order to obtain such a certificate, it is necessary that all three compulsory components of the platform are present in the laptop: an Intel Pentium M processor, an Intel 855 family chipset and a module wireless Intel PRO / Wireless LAN 2100 IEEE standard 802.11b.

A SAMSUNG X10 laptop based on the Intel 855PM chipset was built. The basic configuration of the laptop is shipped with an Intel Pentium M processor with a clock speed of 1.3 GHz ( model SAMSUNG X10 1300) and 512 MB of DDR266 RAM. Also in the line of laptops there are models with a processor clock speed of up to 1.6 GHz. SAMSUNG X10 has HDD Fujitsu 60 GB.

The laptop is equipped with the high-performance graphics engine NVIDIA Ge Force 4 440 (64MB DDR memory).

SAMSUNG X10 functionality is highlighted big amount all kinds of input-output ports. So, the laptop is equipped with two USB ports 2.0, located on the left and right side panels, a VGA connector for connection external monitor, S-Video connector, IEEE-1394 interface connector and PCMCIA type II slot. In addition, there is an RJ-45 connector for connecting to an external Ethernet networks 10 / 100Base-TX and RJ-11 connector for connecting to the telephone line of the integrated modem. On top of that, on the front of the laptop there is a memory stick reader for flash cards (card reader), as well as connectors for headphone connection, microphone and optical S / PDIF audio output.

It should be noted also the convenient two-button touch screen(TouchРad) with scrolling, for which special software is supplied with the laptop, which allows you to lock the screen, adjust its sensitivity, etc.

Communication capabilities SAMSUNG laptop X10 are provided by the Ethernet 10 / 100Base-TX 3Com 3C920 network controller, wireless adapter to connect to wireless network 802.11b and software modem.

The LED indicators on the front of the notebook are divided into two groups. Four indicators are located above the keyboard and are accessible only when the laptop is open, and two more indicators - turning on the laptop and the battery level - are located on the front edge of the bezel.

To activate or block the wireless module, there is a special button with a light indicator. This allows you to scan the wireless network as needed, which significantly saves power consumption in the autonomous work.

The SAMSUNG X10 laptop uses a battery with a passport capacity of 24 420 mWh. This low battery capacity is due to its small size. Place a large battery in such a slim body it is simply impossible, so the manufacturers installed a rather small battery in the laptop, which, of course, has its negative consequences: to expect that such a low battery capacity will provide continuous operation offline, not necessary. However, it is necessary to make a reservation and clarify that we are talking about a standard battery. Optionally, you can purchase a battery with increased capacity, which is slightly larger in size and has a capacity of 48,840 mWh.

The BIOS of the SAMSUNG X10 laptop is not very powerful. In any case, the strict setting of the power consumption modes (Maximum Performance Mode, Automatic Mode, Battery-Optimized Performance Mode, Maximum Battery Mode) provided by the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology is not implemented in the BIOS. The only option available is to disable or enable Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology. However, here, too, everything is not as obvious as we would like. To activate Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology, you must set the Gv3 Enable value for the Intel Speed Step parameter. This is because the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology was previously known under the code name Geyservill III, which, although rarely, is still used today. So, after the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology is activated, the power consumption mode is set through the Power Schemes settings in the Power Options dialog box. Note that when the Intel Speed Step parameter is set to Disable (that is, blocking the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology), regardless of the choice of the power scheme, the processor operates at 600 MHz, not 1300 MHz, which, in principle, is not entirely logical.

Testing technique

Since the SAMSUNG X10 laptop on the Intel Centrino platform implements the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep energy saving technology, which, in fact, is an integral part of Intel processor Pentium M, then the question arose, under what conditions to conduct testing - when this technology is activated or blocked? On the one hand, the concept of Intel Centrino technology is precisely to provide the user with maximum mobility, that is, the possibility of an unprecedented long work in autonomous mode (from a battery). This opportunity is provided by the latest technologies energy saving (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep, Deeper Sleep, IMVP, etc.) implemented at the processor and chipset levels. On the other hand, the use of energy-saving technologies cannot but affect the performance of the laptop.

Performance and battery life are sort of two poles that limit a laptop's potential. In this case, the user should have a choice, which is more important for him in this moment: Get maximum performance at the expense of battery life, or, conversely, maximum battery life at the expense of performance. In addition, laptops do not always function in standalone mode, and when working from external network the use of energy saving technologies is meaningless, therefore, in this mode, the factor is of paramount importance maximum performance.

In order to evaluate the laptop's capabilities in both maximum performance and maximum power saving modes, we conducted tests with both Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology enabled and disabled.

Testing conducted under management operating system Windows XP Pro SP1 (English version). In addition, all the latest Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) available at the time of testing were installed on the laptop. The operating system was also tuned for maximum performance. Additional utilities and drivers were used:

Utility Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility version 5.0.0.1018;

Intel Application Accelerator version 2.2.0.2126.

The laptop was tested with a working resolution of the matrix (1024Ѕ768 pixels) and a color depth of 32 bits.

For testing the SAMSUNG X10 laptop, we used the Future Mark MobileMark 2002 test suite.

The MobileMark 2002 benchmark was run in the Battery and Performance Test mode to measure the notebook's office productivity (performance rating) and battery life.

To achieve the best performance mode in the Windows XP operating system, the Always On power scheme was installed. In addition, to obtain correct results, the monitor shutdown time was blocked, hard drives and switch to Standby mode.

To implement the maximum power saving mode in the Windows XP operating system, the Max Battery power circuit was installed. In addition, the time for turning off the monitor and switching to Standby mode was blocked, and the time for turning off hard drives was set equal to 3 minutes.

Note also that during testing, the brightness of the LCD matrix was set to the minimum level, which, however, turned out to be quite enough for work.

Test results

The test results of the SAMSUNG X10 laptop for each of the power schemes are presented in table. 2.

Always On Scheme

As you would expect, the highest performance and lowest battery life follow the Always On scheme. When this scheme is selected, the processor clock frequency is set equal to the maximum value and does not change when the processor is loaded. This can be verified using the System Monitor utility included with the operating room. Windows systems XP.

News archive

Not so long ago Mobile world Congress 2018, where new flagship company - Galaxy S9. However, the users did not have time to study all the features of the new item, as they are already eager to know everything about the future of the Samsung Galaxy S10. There are already a lot of rumors and all kinds of leaks on the network, but we will try to find out what is true and what is fake.

First of all, it is worth paying attention to the rumor about solid-state batteries in the next generation devices. According to the technical parameters, such batteries have an increased energy capacity in a smaller size, and also do not overheat or explode, unlike conventional ones. lithium ion batteries... Despite all the brilliance of the development, the introduction of such a battery in the Samsung S10 may slightly slow down the release date of the smartphone. According to the company, the developers have not yet fully explored all the nuances of the technology.

It is also known that the company intends to move away from the Galaxy S name in a different direction. At the moment, there are speculations that the new flagship will be called Galaxy X or something similar. Obviously, this is due to the new design that the future smartphone will have.

Galaxy S10 release date

By tradition, all devices of the Galaxy S line will be presented at Mobile World Congress, which takes place in the first quarter. Accordingly, the future flagship should be expected no earlier than the period from January to March next year.

Samsung Galaxy S10 will be officially presented on February 20, 2019.

Dee Jay Koh, who is the head of the mobile division of the Korean company, said that most likely, the name of the future "Galaxy" will be slightly changed. It should be noted that the line itself will remain called Galaxy, but its one-letter name "S" will be replaced by something else.

Similar Samsung solution already taken in the case of the ruler budget smartphones Galaxy A, when all the available Core, Prime, Mini and other brothers were combined into one "A". It looks like now is the turn of the name change flagship smartphones... Let's hope that with the new name the smartphone will get a new look.

Again, do not forget the possible delay in the official release of the Galaxy S10 due to the introduction and testing of a new type of batteries. The company certainly doesn't want a repeat of the old battery exploding incident.

Specifications Samsung Galaxy S10

The exact characteristics of the Galaxy S10 are still unknown, however, there are already quite a few leaks and insights about the screen, processor, camera, RAM and some features. We invite you to familiarize yourself with them.

  • Screen- 4K Ultra HD Super AMOLED
  • CPU- 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon of the latest generation at the time of launch of the smartphone (presumably Snapdragon 855).
  • Camera- main (18 megapixels), front (10 megapixels, dual with optical stabilization and phase detection autofocus).
  • RAM- 6 GB, memory type - LPDDR5.
  • Main memory- 64, 256 or 512 GB.
  • Battery- ~ 3800 mAh.
  • Networks- 2G / 3G / 4G / 5G (600-700 MHz).

At the moment, that's all that is known. However, even this list is not accurate, so take everything with a grain of salt. But, having this list, it is worth considering in detail each item, as well as some of the specifications of the future flagship.

Screen

In a future smartphone, we expect a 4K Ultra HD Super AMOLED display that will cover at least 93% the entire front panel of the device. In addition, Samsung continues to spread rumors about a patent for a flexible display that will apparently be used in the Galaxy S10.

The point is that the new "Galaxy" can acquire a screen that will cover the front, one side and part of the rear panel. The display itself will be made in a single form factor, which, according to the design idea, should “envelop” the smartphone. The corresponding photos are already on the Internet.

A similar idea has already been implemented in Meizu Pro 7, which has 2 displays. The second screen is for displaying notifications and hours. In addition, the rear display of the Meizu Pro 7 has found its use as a selfie mirror. However, the rear screen was separate, and not a single whole with the bezel, but the developers' idea turned out to be quite interesting. We hope that Samsung will be able to bring the flexible display patent into practice, and the Samsung S10 will become a truly revolutionary and new device in every sense.

Processor, RAM, network

As befits all flagships, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 will have top-end specs to satisfy all user needs. It is expected that the heart of the device will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 series, made by 7nm process technology... Qualcomm will possibly create this processor in cooperation with Samsung specialists.

The amount of RAM and user memory is still only a guess. Obviously, the user will be allocated about 256 GB for storing applications, photos, videos and other multimedia data. Perhaps there will be a version of the smartphone with 512 GB of memory on board. It is not known exactly how much RAM the future Galaxy S10 will have. However, in the plans Samsung use chips with the LPDDR5 type, which are significantly superior to the current LPDDR4.

It is also known that the Samsung Galaxy S10 will definitely support 5G generation networks. This network allows data transmission with a maximum latency of 1 millisecond at a speed of 15 GB / s. It is worth noting that MTS, Megafon, Beeline and Tele2 are actively working on the 5G network in Russia. A record has already been set in which the operation of a new generation network has been tested - Huawei smartphone using 5G from Megafon reached a speed of 35 GB / sec.

Note that 4G reaches a maximum speed of 1 GB / s with a 10 millisecond latency. Presumably, the Russians will be able to enjoy the new speed no earlier than mid-2018.

Design

What will make the Samsung S10 stand out from the crowd? Chinese copies? That's right, a design that will surpass all critics' expectations. If the Korean experts, nevertheless, call new smartphone Galaxy X, then it should clearly outperform direct competitor- iPhone X.

Given that the future device will have a curved display, which was written about earlier, you can roughly imagine new design... It should be a monolithic block with curved side bezels like the Galaxy S9; the screen occupies almost the entire front panel - at least 93%; from the front, the display goes through one side frame to back panel; no buttons other than the power / lock key.

Battery

In the question of battery capacity Samsung devices have no complaints. The battery charge lasts for a whole day of active use of the device - 4G, games, viewing and shooting 4K video and prolonged use of the device at maximum display brightness, which should significantly “exhaust” the smartphone.

However, recently, Korean experts are actively working on a new, solid-state type of batteries. This is evidenced by all sorts of reports, as well as news from Samsung. The developers' plans include introducing new batteries into their wearable gadgets, and then mass-producing solid-state batteries for electric cars. According to experts, this will increase the charge capacity, while the dimensions of the battery will be quite compact.

For the future Galaxy S10, this is at least another couple of hours of work and minus a couple of centimeters in the thickness of the device. However, there is no exact data on this yet. Therefore, we can only hope for the success of the developers for the release of the smartphone.

Galaxy S10 features

Design, screen and new processor alone will not be able to win the top sales. Therefore, Samsung Galaxy S10 simply must have its own characteristics. Everyone knows that already long time Samsung experts are working to integrate a fingerprint scanner into the display of the device. However, so far it has not been possible to achieve the desired result. According to critics, by the release of the Galaxy S10, Korean developers should have completed work on the in-display fingerprint scanner.

In addition, do not forget that Samsung has not yet introduced its analogue of Face ID technology, which is popular with iPhone X users. The iris and face scanner, even in simultaneous tandem, does not provide the comfort of use that Apple provides. ... Comparing the security of Face ID and Samsung's face and iris scanner simply doesn't make sense - alas, the fruitful winner is clear.

Also, there is information that the Samsung S10 will hide speakers under its display - both spoken and stereo. This is evidenced by Samsung data, who talk about the new development of the company's specialists. Judging by the experts' opinion, with the right approach of the developers, the result should come out with a “wow” effect. In this case, the maximum volume of the device should not be affected. We hope that everything will be successful in the Korean laboratories.

Despite the demands of users to make the future flagship extremely frameless, the company still faces some difficulties even at the concept stage. In particular, by abandoning the bezels, the device runs the risk of being left without room for the front camera. According to experts, in order to position the camera matrix for selfies, at least 3-5 millimeters must be allocated at the top of the device. Accordingly, the Galaxy S10 will not be so bezel-less. At least at the top, for sure.

The solution to this problem could be a mechanical retractable front camera module. However, Korean experts cut it off at the concept stage, explaining that with such a module, the risk of device breakdowns increases. In addition, it is absurd to introduce something mechanical into a new product while more and more people are rejecting it all over the world.

We left the most interesting for dessert. Perhaps the S10 will implement a revolutionary single-chip system of operation in a single bundle of a processor, a graphics module and a neural network chip. Such a module will significantly speed up the operation of the entire system, as well as its overall performance and efficiency. The work of specialists on this technology is most closely watched by critics and tech bloggers.

Samsung Galaxy S10 price in Russia and in the world

Taking into account all the features of development, new components and production costs, the cost of the Samsung Galaxy S10 in Russia should start at 56,990 rubles. For other CIS countries, it may traditionally slightly increase due to local legal peculiarities. However, it is unlikely that it will be higher than $ 1,100 in equivalent.

We have collected everything for you latest news on the flexible (foldable) smartphone Samsung Galaxy X. Including the company's statement on the release date, certification in Korea, images and photos. It will be a clearly interesting product, combining a compact pocket smartphone and a tablet at the same time thanks to a folding design based on flexible components.

Samsung Galaxy X: overview

Galaxy X is a foldable smartphone with two displays. The project has at least two different names - Project Valley and Project V. According to the top manager of Samsung DJ Koh (Ko Dong Jin), the model will belong to the Galaxy Note line, but in a new version. It's more of a foldable tablet than a phone.

At the moment, the developer has already overcome or is close to overcoming the problems associated with the flexion technology, since this will be precisely “flexion”, and not a change in the position of a part of the body on the hinges, as in clamshell phones. As for the name, the "X" most likely means a letter, like "Project X", and not the Roman numeral "10", like y.

Samsung Galaxy X: specifications

It's too early to talk about the processor, RAM and other parameters, they can be reliably learned only from the press release. At the moment, it is known that if in 2016 the product wore the nomenclature number SM-G929F for the markets of some European and Asian countries, now we are talking about the number SM-G888N0 for South Korea. This is reported by the LTE certification page.

It is also known that Samsung Galaxy X has already been certified by the national communications agency of the Republic of Korea NRRA, WiFi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG. Judging by the available information, among the characteristics of the new items will be an internal display with 4K UltraHD resolution and an external display with QHD resolution.

Below you can see preliminary schematic images and photos of the Samsung Galaxy X concepts:

Samsung Galaxy X: release date

The first serious mentions of Galaxy X date back to 2016. Then many predicted the release of a folding novelty with two displays in the first half of 2017, but this never happened. Although work probably began in 2012 or 2013. This is confirmed by Samsung's showcasing Youm flexible OLED display technology at CES 2013.

According to a Samsung representative, it is not worth waiting for the release of Samsung Galaxy X earlier than November - December 2018.

Added on 27-02-2018

Dong Jin Ko, CEO of Samsung's mobile division, spoke about flexible Galaxy smartphone X. According to him, the device will go into mass production in November this year, and the start of sales is scheduled for 2019. The device will fold inward, although an outward folding model may appear on the market at a later date.

Dong Jin Ko is concerned that people are currently considering the Galaxy X to be a geeky product rather than a new way to interact with a smartphone. Samsung intends to make a completely new type of device out of it, which will become widespread in the market over time.

Added on 24-04-2018

Portal TheBell managed to find out that Samsung intends to find out the reaction of the market, having released from 500 thousand to 2 million devices in mass production. Reportedly, the company has not yet decided on the final design of the gadget: whether it will fold inward or outward. In the first case, the smartphone must have three OLED screens: one outside and two inside, so that it can be used when folded.

Earlier it was reported that in the open position, the device will have a screen with a diagonal of 7.3 inches. The new reports say that the size of the device will be comparable to the models of the Galaxy Note line. Consequently, when folded, users will receive a compact phone with quick access to calls, SMS, etc.

Updated 06-05-18

According to foreign sources, the flexible Samsung smartphone may debut at the mobile industry exhibition MWC 2019. This event will be held in Barcelona, Spain at the end of February next year.

Updated 06-14-2018

The new device will hit the market with a rather impressive price tag of $ 1,850 (about 115 thousand rubles). Of course, the Galaxy X won't be the most expensive smartphone on the market, but it will cost almost double the price of the mainstream flagships.

Perhaps Samsung will present a smartphone at MWC 2019 - information about this appeared in foreign sources.

Updated 04-07-2018

The Sammobile web resource said that the smartphone will not fold in half, as previously assumed, but only two-thirds (that is, a third of the screen will remain open when folded). This is done because the screen, which folds exactly in half, would have to be opened every time the user wants, for example, to see the current time or battery level. If a small part of the display remains visible, the user will be able to receive some information without folding it.

Added on 19-07-2018

According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung plans to be the first to introduce a foldable-screen smartphone. It is expected to release such a device early next year.

There is even a prototype, codenamed "Winner," according to people familiar with the matter, which has a nearly 7-inch screen that can be folded in half. A second screen outside the fold shows notifications and similar data.

The model will be game-oriented and will retail for around $ 1,500. Reaching the broader market is slated for the second half of 2019, when Samsung is likely to launch a foldable smartphone targeting a wider range of users.
