Do you understand how to update the BIOS? Basic code: what is BIOS Updating BIOS on Windows 10.

The PC must be constantly updated. And this applies not only to hardware, operating system and applications. But it is advisable to do this only when a serious need arises.

If the machine works in normal mode without glitches and errors, then there is simply no need to update to the latest BIOS version. Since this procedure is extremely unsafe.

Why update

The new firmware for the device in question requires:

  1. new installed device is not supported;
  2. when there is a conflict with any application that needs to be installed on a personal computer;
  3. when it is necessary to increase the performance of the PC;
  4. if the outdated firmware is damaged.

Most often, an update is required due to the installation of new hardware - a processor, hard disk... Much less often - video cards, random access memory... This need arises from a conflict between hardware and firmware. Very often, old Bios simply do not see hard drives large volume. This situation is corrected in most cases by updating.

Some applications do not support working with certain BIOSes and their programs. In most cases, this situation can be resolved with a version update. Sometimes it is required to run some professional applications.

Often, old firmwares simply do not allow you to overclock the processor in various ways. If it is necessary to change the frequency of the CPU upwards or apply a higher voltage to it, it is necessary to update the BIOS. This usually provides ample opportunities for manipulating various kinds of parameters. central processing unit and other devices.

Sometimes the PC starts giving errors just like that, for no apparent reason. Bios is often the culprit. To solve problems of this kind in many cases, it is the installation new program in Bios.

Current version

There are several ways to determine the BIOS version:

  1. before starting the OS boot;
  2. by means of the operating system;
  3. using third-party software.

In order not to waste time performing any unnecessary actions, the owner of the PC can simply look at the labeling of the software of the device in question even before starting Windows.

To do this, you need to perform in a strict order of actions:

  1. turn on the PC;
  2. wait for the corresponding icon to appear ("American Megatrends", "Energy" and others);
  3. click on the button called "Pause Break".

This key allows you to stop the download personal computer at any stage. Wait until a table or a list of characteristics appears on the monitor. The user needs to find the inscription "Bios Revision" or "Bios Version". There must be a combination of numbers next to one of these phrases. It is these numbers that indicate the version of the Bios used.

You can also find out the labeling of the software of the PC component in question by simply going into its settings.

To do this, you need to do the following:

  • turn on the computer;
  • until the image appears, press the "Delete" key several times;
  • in the section called "Main" find item "Information" -> "Version".

The most simple and in a safe way Finding out the version is to use the item in the Start button called Run.

It is necessary to carry out the following actions:

  1. open "Run";
  2. in the field that appears, enter "msinfo32";
  3. click on "Enter" or just click on "Ok".

This will open the standard operating room component. Windows systems... It contains all the information about the system, including the Bios firmware information.

How to update Bios on a computer

Refresh software for the device in question, there are three ways:

  • in MS-DOS mode;
  • v Microsoft Windows directly;
  • without logging into Windows and MS-DOS.

Each method has both advantages and disadvantages.

Where to get the update

To update Bios, you must first find desired application for this PC component. It is best to download it from the manufacturer's official website. motherboard or Bios. The surest way to find out the model and name of the manufacturer of computer components is to visually inspect the motherboard itself, the chip of the updated device located on it.

You can also use any specialized program in order to find out the marking of the firmware and the manufacturer's name. Everest is best suited for this. Most important advantage of this application in front of analogues is that it offers the user links to the official websites of the manufacturer, where you can find everything you need.

Another source of new firmware versions can be various unofficial sites on the Internet. But the likelihood of downloading counterfeit software with a virus or simply not working, which can damage your PC, is very high. Therefore, it is highly discouraged to use applications from unreliable sources.

Making a backup

Before carrying out any actions that make changes to the firmware, you need to make it backup... This will avoid all sorts of problems in the event of any error that makes the hardware inoperable. A backup copy must be saved to an external medium (USB-disk, flash drive, floppy disk) in order to avoid the need to extract it from the hard disk.

The easiest way to make a copy of the software to be updated is with an application called EZ Flash (used by ASUS).

The copying process consists of the following main steps:

  1. making bootable flash drive with the MS-DOS operating system;
  2. by inserting the USB flash drive into the port, you need to restart the PC;
  3. after pressing the "Delete" key during loading, you should find the "Tool" tab;
  4. select Asus EZ 2 Utility;
  5. press the "F2" key and enter the name of the backup.

After completing all of the above operations, all data necessary for recovery will be saved on the selected media. If necessary, they can be easily used.

Installation

Most in a simple way is the installation of new software on the considered component of a personal computer directly in the Windows operating system.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • download a special update program for specific model motherboard;
  • run executable file.

Most manufacturers have their own update application. That is why it is necessary to use only files downloaded from official resources. For example, at ASUS, the application for performing this action is called ASUSUpdate. It is installed as the most normal application, the menu is intuitive even if it is in English.

Some manufacturers provide for updating their products without logging into the OS. In the ROM of the equipment, special means are already embedded in the update. For example, the ASRock Instant Flash utility can independently perform all the necessary actions in a matter of minutes. You just need to press "F6" - it will scan all available sources of information.

Reset system settings

There are two ways to reset the system settings:

  • software;
  • hardware.

To use the first method, you must:

To perform a hardware reset, you must use a special jumper or remove the battery from a special connector for at least 30 minutes. After performing the necessary actions, a reboot is performed.

Possible problems

When installing new firmware versions, various kinds of errors may occur:

  • version mismatch;
  • data writing error.

The most common problem is using inappropriate files to implement the update. If this type of problem occurs, you must use a backup copy to return the system to the initial state... If an error occurred while writing data, you should proceed in the same way - reset the settings to the standard ones.

When carrying out an operation of this type, it is necessary to make sure that the applied voltage is stable. If electricity is turned off suddenly, there is a high probability of severe damage to the updated component. Which is unacceptable.

It is important to only use firmware from trusted sources. Since there is always a possibility of the presence of bookmarks or viruses in the extraneous data. All of these can damage your computer. It is also worth checking the health of the button cell battery inside. system unit.

Many users do not understand why they need to update Bios. It is necessary to fulfill this operation only in extreme cases, when it is simply impossible to resolve any conflict in an alternative way. The procedure should be carried out as carefully as possible in order to avoid damage.

Sometimes PC users have to face the question of how to update the BIOS of the motherboard. This procedure is necessary to support new important functions or components, when the computer is unstable due to obvious errors in the code. installed version BIOS recommended by manufacturers to improve performance.

This is a serious manipulation that, if the update is unsuccessful, can negatively affect the performance of the system. The motherboard may stop working.

How to update BIOS on windows 10 computer

The Basic Input / Output System (BIOS) largely determines the stability of a computing system, especially its hardware. The speed of operation of the components of the motherboard and peripheral electronics, as well as the correct functioning of the components of the computing system, depends on its correct implementation.

Unfortunately, BIOS, like others software, may contain errors leading to destabilization of the hardware parts of the computer and even their failure.

Motherboard designers strive to timely release updates to the base system, fix critical bugs and add new features to constantly aging hardware.

The question is how to update the BIOS on windows computer 10 arises not only from system board malfunctions. When purchasing a computer, the user often faces the need to upgrade it, for example, to install a new processor unit.

But, even if the processor socket is suitable for installation in the motherboard, the electronics may not "know" anything about it, its logic circuits and new technologies, or may not support its operating frequency.

Installing a new BIOS version can breathe new life into an old motherboard, increase the upgrade potential of the components installed in it, and, ultimately, bring the computer to new level.

Firmware order

Updating the basic I / O system is carried out in several stages:

  1. Determination of the BIOS version required for installation.
  2. Downloading the files required for the firmware.
  3. Installing the updater on removable media or in the operating system.
  4. Preparing the computer for the update operation.
  5. Backup available version.
  6. BIOS firmware.

By itself, the operation of the BIOS firmware may not be tied to a specific version of the operating system. This applies to versions of installers that run prior to loading the operating environment.

The disadvantage of such updating methods is the need for high qualifications of the user, which implies that he has the skills to create bootable media and an understanding of the processes occurring almost in the background.

In accordance with the above implementation plan for installing a new BIOS, it is necessary to start with the choice of the system version. To do this, you need to know the model of the motherboard. This data can be obtained from the user manual or find the markings on the board itself.

Then you need to visit the motherboard developer's website, find the required modification and go to the user support section, where the drivers and utilities are located. Next, go to the BIOS section and see if the manufacturer has released any updates to the basic I / O system. If there are any, we carefully read the description for them.

Attention! When installing new BIOS versions, make sure that they support the installed on this moment processor! Otherwise, the motherboard may not start it after flashing!

After making sure that a new version BIOS approaches the hardware, download the files necessary for installation. Together with them comes instructions for carrying out the firmware.

Also, the process of installing a new BIOS version can be described in the motherboard user's manual, and there can be several update methods. Depending on preferences, the user must download exactly those files that fit his skills.

Then the downloaded files are prepared for the firmware process. If this is an installer launched through Windows, then it is installed. Usually, developers ensure that such a program is compatible with different versions Microsoft systems, that is, they work even in the last, tenth, release. Unfortunately, for other operating systems, flashers from under the user's application level are very rare.

Installation directly from the BIOS can also be implemented. For this, it is implemented special section, which is described in the manual for the board. To update, it is necessary to write new BIOS files to a medium, for example, a flash drive, on which a backup copy of the current system version can later be written.

The manufacturer can also implement a firmware program for the base system on the disk that comes with motherboard... The update files in this case are also written to external storage.

For legacy systems, a boot floppy is created on which a special bootloader is written. Boot from a floppy disk is selected, to which the firmware files are also copied.

After preparing the necessary software, it is necessary to ensure uninterrupted power supply for the computer, since during the firmware process, the interruption of the power supply can lead to fatal consequences up to the complete failure of the motherboard. The laptop battery must be fully charged, and in the case of a system unit, you must use a source uninterruptible power supply.

Immediately before updating the BIOS on a windows 10 computer, make a backup copy of it. In the case of starting from the operating environment, they simply select the appropriate item of the flasher program and indicate the place on the hard disk for storing the copy.

When using BIOS or boot disk the flash drive is selected as the storage. If you use a floppy disk, the copy will be written directly to it. When using any method other than the first, it is advisable to have instructions before your eyes in order to do everything correctly.

After creating a backup, you can update the BIOS. Now a menu item or command is already selected for the firmware itself, and after its completion the computer reboots.

Attention! After upgrading the basic I / O system, all of its settings are returned to their default values. During the first start of the computer after flashing, go to BIOS and set the necessary CMOS variables.

Now it remains only to check the BIOS version, usually this parameter is located on the first tab (MAIN or STANDARD).

  • press the Win + R keys and enter msinfo32 in the Run window that appears;

In the window that appears, select the "System Information" field, with right side you will see the BIOS version

How to update BIOS

Different motherboard manufacturers use different utilities and update procedures may differ, but the methods are very similar for all this instruction should help you.

First you need to go to the website of your motherboard manufacturer and select downloads:

if your motherboard manufacturer is not listed, use the Google search engine.

For example, you have an HP laptop (in my example HP650):

2. Select the operating system installed on your computer;

3. A list of drivers will appear below, in this list we find BIOS => opposite it, click "Load" (of course, if the BIOS version is newer than yours);

4. Run the downloaded file and agree with everything, click Next.

5. A window will open in front of you and the update will begin, and in big red letters at the bottom it says "Do not turn off the computer";

6. The computer will reboot and the installation will continue, after which it will write Flash Complete. In other words, the BIOS update was successful.

Other motherboard manufacturers can post a regular archive for updating the BIOS by opening it - you will see several files, one of them will be an update instruction with the txt extension (often readme.txt) => in this file describes the ideal upgrade for your motherboard.

Some manufacturers offer to upload files from the archive to a USB flash drive => restart the computer and go to BIOS => and there you need to select the BIOS update option.

Intel offers several types of BIOS downloads: files with the bio extension are used to restore a non-working BIOS (you will need a floppy disk or disk to write it); self-extracting file for updating BIOS from Windows; and an archive for updating from Dos.

In short: many motherboard manufacturers have made it easier to update the BIOS to a few clicks from the user, the main thing is that the computer does not turn off during the installation process! It is advisable to update the BIOS as needed, that is, if you have any problems, and the description of the update says that after installing the update it will be solved this problem... Again, if your computer works fine and there are no problems, it is better not to experiment 🙂. That's all for today, if there are any additions - write comments! Good luck to you!

As you probably know, BIOS is a firmware that is stored in a ROM (read only memory) chip on the motherboard of a computer and is responsible for the configuration of all PC devices. And the better this program, the higher the stability and performance of the operating system. This means that the version of CMOS Setup can be periodically updated in order to improve the performance of the operating system, fix errors and expand the list of supported equipment.

When starting to update the BIOS, remember that in the event of an unsuccessful completion of this process and equipment failure, you lose the right to warranty repair from the manufacturer. Be sure to secure your uninterruptible power supply when flashing the ROM. And think carefully about whether you really need to upgrade the "wired" software.

Method 1: Update using BIOS built-in utility

Modern motherboards often have firmware with a built-in utility to update the firmware. It is convenient to use them. Let's take an example of EZ Flash 2 Utility from ASUS.

  1. Loading the version you want BIOS from the site of the hardware manufacturer. We drop the installation file onto the USB flash drive and insert it into the USB port of the computer. We reboot the PC and enter the BIOS settings.
  2. In the main menu, move to the tab "Tool" and run the utility by clicking on the line .
  3. Specifying the path to the file new firmware and press Enter.
  4. After a short process of updating the BIOS version, the computer restarts. The set goal has been achieved.
  5. Method 2: USB BIOS Flashback

    This method appeared recently on motherboards renowned manufacturers, for example ASUS. When using it, you do not need to enter BIOS, boot Windows or MS-DOS. You don't even need to turn on the computer.

    Method 3: Update in MS-DOS environment

    Once upon a time, updating BIOS from DOS required a floppy disk with a utility from the manufacturer and a downloaded firmware archive. But since floppy drives have become a real rarity, now a USB drive is quite suitable for upgrading CMOS Setup. You can familiarize yourself with this method in detail in another article on our resource.

    Method 4: Update in Windows

    Every self-respecting manufacturer of computer hardware produces special programs for flashing the BIOS from the operating system. Usually they are on disks with software from the motherboard package or on the company's website. It is quite easy to work with this software, the program can automatically find and download firmware files from the network and update the BIOS version. You just need to install and run this software. You can read about such programs by clicking on the link below.

    In conclusion, a couple of small tips. Be sure to reserve old firmware BIOS on a USB flash drive or other media in case of a possible rollback to the previous version. And download the files only on the official website of the manufacturer. Better to be overly cautious than spending the budget on repairman services.

Read, how to find out the BIOS version of your PC, check for updates and update the BIOS via Windows or DOS. Updating or releasing an operating system, releasing a new processor, or adding support for a new security standard may require you to update your firmware mother card... Finding the BIOS version

We'll take a look at how to do this on Windows 10, 8, or 7.

Checking for a BIOS update

Unfortunately, the BIOS update cannot be checked Windows team... Does not exist universal way checker that will fit any computer or laptop. We recommend checking for updates on the manufacturer's website. We looked at how to get the BIOS manufacturer name above.

If it's a laptop or computer manufacturer, find the exact model of your device on their website. On the product page besides technical characteristics a driver download section and a BIOS update program will be presented. If your motherboard manufacturer is listed, go to the manufacturer's website in the download section and find a program to update the BIOS.

Check the latest available version with yours, and if a new firmware version is available, download it.

BIOS update via Windows or DOS

Typically, the BIOS update program contains installation instructions. For Dell, HP laptops, etc. it's just a setup EXE that can be run like any of its driver files and it will take care of the rest.

The update installation file is usually included in a ZIP archive along with instructions. Remove it and read the instructions carefully. Disable all extra programs, connect your laptop or computer to a reliable power source. A power outage or power surge will cause your computer to be no longer usable.

The advantage of updating the BIOS via Windows is automatic check, which will not allow you to install software incompatible with your hardware. That is, if you run an update intended for a DELL computer on HP, the program will display a warning and close. In case of DOS program you will also have to study the instructions and the update commands.
