Comparison between iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S7. IPhone battery problems: S7 will last longer

Not only to catch up, but also to overtake, to present new, highly desirable, unique and commercially attractive solutions, setting a new level of quality and functionality. This race of smartphones Apple and Samsung has no end in sight, and the other day the Korean company did. How weighty?

Construction and design

It is reckless to change the appearance of a product if it itself has become business card- Neither Apple nor Samsung have accumulated enough technological innovations yet, the introduction of which would justify such a step. The exterior of the Galaxy S7 is formed by traditional polished metal and glass, neither the shape nor the arrangement of the physical buttons has changed. Regarding dimensions, the Korean flagship turned out to be thicker not only than its predecessor Galaxy S6, but also the apple device, 7.7 mm versus 7.3 mm in the iPhone 6s. The adherence to the flat Home button saves the day, due to this, the Samsung flagship looks smaller and not as flattened than its competitor, although it is equipped with a larger display (4.7 inches for the iPhone 6s and 5.1 inches for the Galaxy S7).

The surface of the Korean smartphone flaunts a traditional USB port and 3.5 audio input, holes covered with nothing, while the Samsung Galaxy S7 is sealed, while the iPhone 6s is not.

Now let's read the test in tiny letters on the official website of the manufacturer, which says: immersion in water to a depth of 1.5 m for up to 30 minutes. This is not exactly what the IP68 protection standard implies, the compliance with which is declared, but there is no such information on the page of the Cupertin portal.

There is still no data on the strength characteristics of the gadget, but this will not be the case - like the iPhone 6s, the new Galaxy S7 will have to go through an endless cycle of executions, as soon as it falls into the hands of bloggers.

In addition, it is worth noting the availability of official support wireless charging Galaxy S7 (sold separately) and fast charging. The manufacturer claims that in 10 minutes, new smartphones will receive the amount of charge required to autonomous work up to 4 hours.

Display

In a head-to-head comparison of specs, the iPhone 6s has no chance of winning; Samsung's new flagship outperforms it in every key parameter. Let the imperfect vision of an ordinary user not be able to, but the imagination will help to distinguish the difference between 577 ppi in the Galaxy S7 and only 326 ppi in his apple counterpart.

The superiority in the size of the screen space, as well as the maximum resolution, is quite obvious - this is 1334 × 750 for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s versus 2560 × 1440 for the 5.1-inch flagship Samsung. Here is the flag in the hands of interface designers and game makers who could find a worthy use for this wealth.

Another sign of progress in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S7 is the implementation of the “Always On Display” concept, an always active screen. From the point of view of engineers, momentary unlocking of the system in order to just check notifications of new likes or find out what time it is, is akin to the command "In the gun!" for the electronic organism exhausted by insomnia.

Users unknowingly wanted to sneeze on strict recommendations - it's easier to make sure that the requested information is constantly displayed on the display. And nothing else, so the load on the batteries should be reduced, also because the smartphone will stay in passive mode for much longer.

The iPhone 6s has nothing like this, officially, yet. And it is not known whether it will appear.

Specifications

The Korean device's 4GB of RAM should give it a reasonable head start over the American competitor with its modest 2GB of RAM. However, the heart of the iPhone 6s is the latest offspring of the semi-legendary A family of chips, on which Apple has spent colossal amounts of money evolving. Plus M9 motion coprocessor. Inside the Samsung Galaxy S7, a processor of its own production is also installed, either a 4-core Snapdragon 820, or an 8-core Exynos, it depends on the configuration and the region of sale.

Koreans remain faithful to the international tradition - if the user wants, he will either buy additional space in the cloud, or use the micro-SD card slot.

And the starting conditions, 32 or 64 GB of integrated memory in the Galaxy S7, are clearly preferable to Apple's policy. Owners of the iPhone 6s are forced to either live on 16 gigs (of which, in fact, less than 11 GB will be available), or pay. On average, this is noticeably more expensive than buying a memory card, and a Korean gadget can have up to 200 GB in excess of the main one.

Camera capabilities

Whether Samsung is taking seriously the rumors that the next generation iPhone will have a camera instead of one massive is unknown. But no radical innovations in this regard were found in the Galaxy S7, except for the non-standard BRITECELL flash module.

The front modules are 5 megapixels, the main cameras are 12 megapixels, but the size of a single pixel of the Korean device is larger, 1.44 microns versus 1.22 microns for the apple gadget. And this is the key to the best quality of shooting in low light conditions, which is indirectly confirmed by the first practical experiments. It also affects the fact that the aperture of the main iPhone cameras f2.2, while his opponent has f1.7.

Samsung has provided its brainchild with a decent dowry in the form of different shooting modes, mostly of an entertainment nature. This is an animated panorama, and hyperlapse, and taking photos with a breakdown by frames and then choosing the best. Plus Dual Pixel technology and optimized AF speed. However, it is worth noting that a user who has made his way through the thorns of settings will be able to take advantage of this wealth, which unfavorably distinguishes the Galaxy S7 from the iPhone 6s with its prohibitive automation and simplification of all processes by default.

Comparison of user interfaces

As a direct heir to the Galaxy family, the S7 has a rich, varied interface - nothing to say. " pure android"There is no question (using a proprietary shell user interface TouchWiz). As if in contrast to iOS 9, there are by default a lot of widgets and add-ons, which are far from useless, but require some attention from the user. Who will win in the end, the owner of the iPhone 6s or the new Korean flagship is a purely subjective question. But the framework is clearly delineated.

Meet Vulkan API, a powerful toolkit for turning your smartphone into a mobile game console... Of course, it is increasingly dependent on the developers of the applications for which it is intended, so it is worth taking the innovation as a response to Apple's Metal technology. In the meantime, they work tirelessly, gamers can use the new add-on for photo and video recording of their records. With the Samsung Galaxy S7 in hand, you can stream games, disable individual buttons to avoid confusion, set up notifications so that they don't distract from the process, and much more.

Summarizing

Both smartphones are top-end models in their class, equipped with the best this moment mobile processors, carry on board suitable amounts of memory and richly equipped camera modules. The hardware stuffing is cleverly squeezed into pretty cases of modest dimensions, whose displays are equally pleasing to the eye with a colorful picture. Perhaps the Samsung Galaxy S7, with its 3000mAh battery and Always On Display, will be able to do this longer than the iPhone 6s (1715mAh). And the actual screen parameters of the Korean flagship are noticeably higher - a mute reproach to the Cupertinians, who gave the world Retina displays.

Samsung is aggressively promoting the concept of thematic plug-ins by expanding its range of services. This is no worse and no better than the laconic cleanliness of iOS, but in combination with new pro-game technologies, it creates some risk of churning users from the apple eco-environment. Coupled with an attractive design and pricing policy, the iPhone 6s gets a dangerous competitor - users who are dissatisfied with the Apple smartphone can change the platform without fear of losing something significant.

A lot of time has passed since the announcement of the Galaxy S7. If you remember, the presentation took place in a style unusual for Samsung. For the first time, the focus was not on the technical characteristics, but on the impressions of the device. This approach is advocated by Apple, so it is not surprising that it hit hard at the presentation. Samsung drove through the competitor in the face of the iPhone 6S in the camera area, not forgetting to emphasize other advantages of the flagship: a waterproof case, support for memory cards, fast charging. Work was done on the Galaxy S6 bugs and it seemed that Samsung had made an ultimate flagship that was destroying the competition. I had the opportunity to test the Galaxy S7 and compare it to the iPhone 6S. I'm sure some iPhone users thought about switching to S7 after the announcement, and maybe even already switched to it. In this comparison, I will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each flagship and share my personal impressions of the temporary transition from the iPhone 6S to the Galaxy S7.

Design and construction

We should start talking about the design of the Galaxy S7 with the colors, they strongly affect the perception of the product. White and black turned out to be more successful than the others, as they are not visible fingerprints thanks to a special coating. The phones seemed to be dipped in caramel. The gold and silver versions turned out to be shiny and easily soiled, fingerprints instantly remain on them. Remember the mirror coating of some Galaxy S6, Xperia Z5 Premium - here it is the same, only this time without mirroring. In a cool room or on the street, the traces are easily rubbed off and disappear on their own, but once you warm up a little, looking at the S7 is no longer so pleasant. Alas, the white version of the smartphone is not officially sold in Russia, so if you don't want to worry too much about prints, take the classic black version. Titanium silver looks more attractive, but is much less suitable for everyday use.

The design of the S7 itself hasn't changed much from the S6. The outlines have become smoother, at the base of the same glass on both sides and a metal frame. The changes are stronger in the case of the S7 edge, it feels much more pleasant in the hand in comparison with its predecessor. In S7, the metal frame looks more like a bumper than a smooth continuation of the case. The same Alcatel IDOL The 4S looks and feels more solid, although it uses the same materials. The S7 frame would not be hurt by a dense paint or other finish, it seems rough and not processed, scratches and chips easily remain on it. With the purchase of a leather case and with careful handling of the device, these troubles can be avoided. In general, careful handling of a glass and metal phone for many thousands of rubles will become your credo. The most sensitive part of the case turned out to be the fingerprint scanner and its protective coating.

It is made of plastic, or some kind of fragile glass, since the scanner of the test Galaxy S7 was badly scratched even before it fell into my hands. This cannot be achieved with careful handling of the device, but it is easy to achieve if you carry the device with keys and change in one pocket or in one section of your bag. This would be problematic to achieve if there were sapphire glass protection for the scanner, as in the iPhone, but alas. At the same time, the case of the iPhone 6S also cannot be called wear-resistant. It has a slippery and sleek aluminum body, which is also not recommended to be worn with change or keys. Using the iPhone 6S without a case is more expensive, and the thick sides of the native cases or additional glass will save the screen from cracking on occasion.

The rest of the design and body are good. Samsung engineers should pay tribute, because the dimensions of the case for a smartphone with a 5.1 "" screen are extremely small and comparable to the 4.7 "iPhone 6S. Moisture protection and dust protection are rather pleasant additions, the phone is not afraid of rain or spilled liquid, but it is not worth it on purpose to drown the gadget and use it for underwater shooting. Half an hour in this mode, it will last thanks to the IP68 protection, but you take risks. iPhone 6S does not offer any advanced waterproofing, although rain and an accidentally spilled glass of water will not be a problem for it (like sea waves - from personal experience) In some foreign tests, the device can withstand immersion in water for 10 minutes.

The S7's screen has a good oleophobic coating and collects less prints than the iPhone 6S's display. In terms of resolution, the flagship Samsung is far ahead - 2560x1440 (577 ppi) versus 1334x750 (326 ppi) in the iPhone 6S. In fact, the pixel density is comparable, and the Quad HD resolution of the Super AMOLED screen is needed primarily to hide the pentail. The picture quality is close to the reference for both devices, but not without reservations. The AMOLED display in the Galaxy S7 is characterized by infinite contrast and black depth, high brightness and close to natural colors, but only in the "Main" screen mode. In other modes, colors are not for everybody. As with all such screens, with deviations, violet-green stripes are visible, and the display itself turns green with vertical tilts. In everyday life, this may not be striking, but lying in bed, when the phone does not hold in the most natural way, it is already hard not to notice. You get used to this over time, and if you use the "Basic" mode, the distortions when tilted due to the calm color scheme are not so much visible.

The iPhone 6S has an IPS screen with a contrast ratio of 1400: 1, which by IPS standards gives a deep black, which, of course, is infinitely far from black in AMOLED screens. There are natural colors and shades, and a small inversion is visible only with strong diagonal deviations. In other positions, the screen performs equally well. IOS 9.3 introduces Night Shift, which lowers blue levels and warms up the screen for comfortable night reading. I would like to see such a function on all smartphones in the world. Some companies already have it or had it before it appeared in iOS, Samsung does not have it yet. Using the screen at night is not so comfortable, but there is no strong discomfort due to the low minimum brightness. Samsung also has an adaptive screen mode, which changes the color gamut of the display depending on the conditions (it works only with native applications), but it uses the most vivid color setting by default, and I can not name its effect on the display behavior noticeable. This is never the TrueTone display in the iPad Pro 9.7 (review), the change in shades of which is noticeable immediately with any external change in the environment.

The assembly of the Galaxy S7 raises no objections, as well as the location of the main controls, except for the touch buttons under the screen. If you have not used them before, then out of habit you will encounter accidental clicks and touches at inopportune moments. The backlighting of the keys by standard means can no longer be configured (but you can use third party utility Galaxy Button Light), and you will surely get tired of it quickly. After the iPhone 6S, the random button presses and hypersensitivity of the S7's screen will strain any defector a lot. Apple tweaks the iPhone display so that only frequent touch-screen areas are considered hypersensitive. This saves you from accidental clicks, so using the native iOS keyboard is comfortable even on the 4 "screen of the iPhone 5S. This is the whole secret. Most Android smartphones have screens that are calibrated differently and instantly react to accidental touches and presses of the wrong interface elements. The Galaxy S7 is no exception here, but you can get used to it in a couple of days.

Software

Galaxy S7 works under Android 6.0.1 with the latest version of the TouchWiz shell that has never looked so good. It still has enough clumsy, confusing settings, but at least it is smooth and fast. After iOS, it can be used comfortably. In experimental functions, we added the ability to remove the application menu, in which icons are displayed immediately on desktops, as in iOS, MIUI, EMUI, Flyme OS and the fresh LG UX. Rumor has it that naked Android will soon lose the app menu too. But this is not the only thing that has been added in the new TouchWiz.

First, about the main points. Instead of Google now the left desktop is dedicated to the Briefing application, which is integrated into the Flipboard shell. It turns off, but there is much more news and articles here than Google Now offers, so you can leave it. Google Assistant and Now On Tap are activated by a long press on the Home button. Double-clicking the button launches the camera from anywhere and even from the lock screen, this is very useful feature... Hold the call button latest applications starts split screen mode.

In the settings, frequent functions should be set to the top position, by default there are not all useful sections there. Immediately there is a setting for display modes, detailed audio parameters, a memory and power saving manager. Background shading is optionally added to desktop icons to make them appear the same size. The gesture control setting has not gone anywhere. New to TouchWiz is the Always On Display mode, which displays a clock, calendar, or image on the lock screen. This function can hardly be called useful, it distracts attention to the smartphone, because the calendar or clock on the locked display is constantly moving (otherwise the burnout of the display would not be long in coming), moreover, it affects the autonomy of the device. Another useful addition is Game Launcher, which automatically collects games into one folder. With the help of Game Tools, during games, touch buttons are disabled, screen recording is activated, screenshots are taken and notifications are turned off, in it you can increase or decrease the resolution of the game. One-handed mode on such a diagonal is not very useful, and the simple style of the desktop is useful for older people or those who do not need all the TouchWiz chips.

There are few preinstalled apps and Samsung should be given credit for that, which used to be a serious problem. But the company went too far, even removing the music player and video player. Fortunately, they are easy to download from the Galaxy Add-on Store, just like other utilities, including those that come as a gift for S7 owners. But Instagram, WhatsApp, package are installed out of the box. Microsoft Office... The Samsung Members program deserves special attention. It diagnoses the smartphone, communicates with support and provides service workers with remote access to the device for setting and optimizing parameters.

There is not much to say about iOS, it is mostly unchanged since iOS 7, and the main improvements concern appearance and some specific functions. For tablets, iOS 9 has added a split screen and picture-in-picture, for phones there are in-depth search capabilities and Siri, extended functions of native applications. iOS 9.3 brought Night Shift mode (makes the screen warmer for night reading and fast sleep), improved performance and stability, some additional settings in the Health app and Touch ID support in Notes. In the iPhone 6S review, you will read more about the system and operation of 3D Touch, after all, it is also part of iOS recently, and in the iOS 10 review you can find out what Apple has in store for its users for the fall.

Camera

Compared to the S6 and Note 5, the smartphone camera has undergone the most significant upgrade in the S7. Its characteristics: 12 MP, Dual Pixel, 1.4 microns, autofocus, flash, optical image stabilization, f / 1.7, 4K video recording. The resolution was reduced in comparison with its predecessors, the pixel size was increased, the pixels themselves were pumped, the aperture was made wider, the focusing was made lightning fast - and one of the best is ready. mobile cameras... Why not the best? There are a lot of nuances.

Let's start with the fact that there is not one such camera, but two. One uses a Samsung sensor, the other Sony, in daytime there is no difference between them, but in the dark, the version with a Sony sensor turns green. Focusing on the S7 is impressively accurate and fast, but only in the center of the frame, which has 35 focus points. Plus it doesn't work at 1080p / 60fps when recording video, but it does work in 4K. Sometimes smears are possible, the percentage is about the same as on the iPhone 6S. Image post-processing sometimes seems aggressive, albeit with effective noise reduction. This resulted in overestimated sharpness, which can not be noticed in every scene - landscape photography, photographing slides and presentations with text (a visible outline appears around the letters). In other situations and scenarios, you will likely not notice this in any way, having received photos with the correct white balance, natural colors and correct exposure. For those who are worried about JPG sharpness, a professional mode with RAW export is offered, which, on the output, can be easily processed in any advanced graphic editor... Even mobile Adobe Lightroom consumes them with a bang and reveals the Galaxy S7 edge camera more fully. Moment: the camera always starts in automatic mode, so for the pros it is recommended to put the Pro-mode shortcut of the camera on the desktop in order to immediately launch it. The distortion problem, widely hyped by some users, has already been fixed by software in one of the latest updates.

Otherwise, we have a wonderful camera, which, whatever one may say, takes some getting used to. The script "got it and took it off" does not always work here. The iPhone 6S in this regard shows itself as any iPhone before. He may not take the best and clearest shot in the world, but he will just get a good shot as quickly as possible. Knowing all the features of the S7 camera will make it easier to get an impressive shot. Not easier than the iPhone, but easier than not knowing the features. For patience and hard work, the S7 camera will reward you with a minimum amount of noise, clear shots in not the best conditions, good blurring of the background in macro and excellent food photos (for a food blogger to note). Below is a comparison of shots from the iPhone 6S, where the Korean flagship is on the left and the American one on the right.

Performance, benchmarks, sound

There are two modifications of the smartphone, one with the Snapdragon 820 chipset, the other with the Exynos 8 Octa 8890. The second is shipped to Russia and most countries of the world, and that's good. The Samsung chipset proves to be strong and productive, has top results in benchmarks, weak heating indicators, no significant throttling and no problems in the games we tested. In AnTuTu, the device selects 130,828 points, 2161/6554 in Geekbench, in Vellamo - 6253/3555/3471 points, Epic Citadel - 58.4 fps in Ultra quality, in GFXBench - 7.9 / 15/15/28/27/40 / 53/86 fps, 3DMark - 2158 points. Interface slowdowns are practically excluded, although the system is not immune from application crashes.

Asphalt 8, Unkilled, Dead Effect 2 and Implosion run fast and smoothly on maximum settings quality. With the iPhone 6S, things are the same, the benchmark results are also comparable (I am not listing them here, because even half of these tests are not available on iOS, for clarity, check out the fresh AnTuTu rating). Both devices noticeably heat up their cases. The heating is uniform both there and there, but the S7 has a slightly more pronounced warming of the right edge of the device. Both devices are best used in cases if you plan to play for a long time, although you probably won't be able to play for a long time. Samsung Galaxy S7 battery life is about 4 hours of screen with sufficient active load (the Galaxy S7 version with edge-display lasts longer and heats up less). iPhone 6S runs out of battery in the same amount of time. if you use it to the fullest. Both devices will last a day, but for this you need to let go of them at least sometimes. Plus Galaxy S7 can be called here fast charging, because in 90 minutes the 3000 mAh battery is fully charged. The iPhone 6S, with its 1715 mAh battery, takes longer to charge if you use the iPad charger, and much longer if the charger comes with the iPhone.

The sound of smartphones in headphones has become an important criterion for many users and for me personally, so it was curious to compare these two devices using Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H6 headphones. The comparison showed that the iPhone 6S sounds cleaner and more detailed, wider, and has more headroom. Galaxy S7 sounds good, most users with more simple headphones will not be upset. If you dig deeper into the settings, play around with imitation of tube sound and adjust the sound specifically for your hearing, you can achieve a slightly more interesting experience from the device. iPhone 6S is much simpler in this regard and adjusting its sound except for the built-in equalizer and third-party players is problematic.

conclusions

The Galaxy S7 is undoubtedly Samsung's best flagship, offering maximum performance and a cool camera in a stylish glass and metal design. The device is not without nuances, but there are no perfect smartphones, and the iPhone 6S is also very far from a dream device. Should you upgrade from iPhone 6S to S7? Yes, if you are not dependent on Apple services and do not have a strong attachment to a certain set of software that looks or runs a little worse on Android. At least until the fall, the flagship Samsung will find something to keep you occupied, and then the iPhone 7 will be released. You should definitely take a closer look at the Galaxy S7 or S7 edge if you've owned all of the past. Samsung flagships or top-end solutions of competitors and look for a worthy replacement for them. Until the end of the year, the Android world is unlikely to see something more significant than the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge (except perhaps the Galaxy Note 7). Despite some shortcomings, S7 / S7 edge now has practically no competitors among Android and most likely will not have them for a long time.

Of all the latest devices released by the South Korean manufacturer, the Galaxy line update is the closest in terms of its characteristics to the current models of Apple communicators. However, there are many features in the new products that Apple smartphones cannot yet boast of. Let's consider the most important of them.

AMOLED Displays

Apple has equipped its iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus communicators with LCD displays with a resolution of 1334 × 750 and 1920 x 1080 pixels, respectively. In turn, Samsung decided to equip its new items with superAMOLED displays, the characteristics of which exceed those of Apple smartphones. In particular, the manufacturer declared for the Galaxy S7 a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, and for the Galaxy S7 edge at 2560 × 1440 pixels.

MicroSD card support

New items will be sold in two versions - with a storage capacity of 32 and 64 GB. However, it will be possible to expand the built-in memory through the use of microSD memory cards. The manufacturer claims support for cards up to 200 GB.

RAM

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are equipped with 4 GB of RAM, while their closest rivals, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, have half the RAM. Nevertheless, reviewers urge not to jump to conclusions - in performance tests, the 5.5-inch Apple tablet shows better results than the Galaxy Note 5 equipped with the same 4 GB of RAM without any problems.

Camera aperture parameters

Despite the fact that the resolution of the main cameras of the new products is 12 megapixels, as in the current iPhone versions, unlike the latter Galaxy smartphones got an improved aperture - ƒ / 1.7. This feature plays a role in the regulation of the lens aperture. Samsung Galaxy s7 allows you to take very high quality pictures in low light conditions.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge smartphones Samsung for the first time equipped with a PV module of its own production - BRITECELL. Its resolution is 24 megapixels, but the final image is widowed smaller due to the merging of neighboring dots to sharpen the picture during shooting.

Dual Pixel

Dual Pixel is an autofocus technology commonly found in DSLRs. It was she who decided to equip cameras in new flagship smartphones Samsung, Thanks to the innovation, the speed and accuracy of autofocus will increase.

CPU cooling

Since in its new products Samsung has increased the performance of the central and GPU, this required the implementation of a new technology for cooling the chips. In updating the Galaxy line, it was decided to use liquid cooling, which should protect the gadgets from overheating.

Battery capacity

Apple developers have endowed the iPhone 6s with a 1715 mAh battery, and the iPhone 6s Plus with a 2750 mAh battery. In these parameters, Samsung is also ahead of its main competitor - the Galaxy S7 has a 3000 mAh battery, and the Galaxy S7 edge has a 3600 mAh battery. However, it should be remembered that the battery life of devices depends not only on battery performance, but also on optimization. software, the degree of power consumption of the display, etc.

Introduction

It has become a good tradition to compare products of the same type, which not only act in the same class, but borrow a lot from each other, as a result, are perceived at the same level. In a detailed comparison-review, I would like to dwell on both the little things and the basic things in order to move from the private to the general, what each of these phones can give. I'm not just focusing on technical characteristics, they are useless apart from the use cases, but on what and how can be done on these phones. What are the benefits you get from working with them.

If you already know that the iPhone is best phone or the Galaxy is superior to the iPhone, then close the page and save your nerves. Fans of this or that device should definitely not read the weighted text, where all the capabilities of the devices are considered with examples and everything is illustrated with detailed calculations. Having made such a reservation, let's get down to reviewing the devices.

An important addition. Everywhere I consider the EDGE model, but apart from curved screen, as well as the price, it does not differ from the Galaxy S6, so you can safely extend all the considerations to this device. In the conclusions, we will consider it from the point of view of price / quality ratio, but the EDGE model will always appear in the text as the closest in positioning to the iPhone 6s.

Case dimensions, weight, materials and design

Discussing other people's tastes is a thankless task. Some people like one thing, some others, so let's leave the design aside and focus on the quality of execution and the practical consequences of this.

Samsung switched to 7000 series aluminum alloy, the same material later began to be used in the iPhone 6s. Interestingly, with comparable body sizes, the iPhone weighs 143 grams versus 132 grams for EDGE. But the sizes differ as follows:

  • iPhone 6s - 138.3x67.1x7.1mm
  • Galaxy S6 EDGE - 142.1 x 70.1 x 7.0 mm

Both devices fit well in the hand, a rounded edge cuts into the EDGE at first, but you quickly get used to it. I often hear that these devices are slippery, but I have never had such problems. For those who do not like the side edge of the EDGE, you can check out the regular S6. It feels as close to the iPhone as possible in the hand, there are no differences.

Often, users of the previous iPhone 6 say that the 6s has become heavier and this is noticeable in the hand. It's true, the center of gravity is located so that the phone is perceived as weighty, this is a subjective impression, the differences in grams are not so huge.

Back cover on EDGE it is covered with glass, the metallic color plays in the sun, fingerprints are not visible on it (only under certain lighting conditions). Corning Gorilla Glass 4, it is resistant to drops and does not break even when dropped on the asphalt from a height of one and a half meters, although the question here is your luck, you can break glass from ten centimeters.

The iPhone 6s uses a metal back with inserts for antennas, this design looks different, there is no metallic sheen effect, and here we again enter the territory of what and who likes more. A matter of taste. From a household point of view, both devices have exactly the same strength and resistance to external influences.

Now let's move on to the front of the devices, namely the glass that covers the display. Samsung uses Corning Gorillla Glass 4, the latest generation from Corning, which is extremely durable, drop-resistant and scratch-resistant. Many people perceive scratch resistance as a statement that they can not be at all and the phone can be safely carried with the keys. Unfortunately, this is not the case, no one is insured against minor scratches. They appeared on my phone after several months of daily use, and this is absolutely normal.

The iPhone 6s features mineral, tempered glass. I often had to read on various resources that Corning glass is also installed here, but there is simply no confirmation of this. Apple is not listed on the manufacturer's website, you can find the list itself.

Another point is related to the fact that the glass behaves exactly the same as on the iPhone 6, it has less resistance to scratches, for example, in my pocket and without keys there was such a long scratch from the second phone. Nobody scratched the phone on purpose.

It is also known that mineral glass on the iPhone does not tolerate drops even from low heights, its strength is much inferior to that of Gorilla Glass. The main iPhone problem when falling is broken screen, in EDGE from the same height it is often done without damage at all. Unfortunately, Apple cannot get access to Corning technologies, as the company is co-owned by Samsung. The result is slightly worst performance device in everyday use. Screen replacement is the most expensive operation for any phone, so be careful with them. On the other hand, no one thinks that it is his phone that will fall and break.

In this video, you can see how the 6s screen usually breaks when dropped from a low height, everything is pretty revealing. Let me remind you that such videos are always a game of probability, you can break your phone even if you hit the carpet. Another thing is that the iPhone 6 / 6s is guaranteed to beat when dropped, and this is already a proven fact, but the EDGE / S6, on the contrary, is more difficult to break.

In terms of body materials, these devices are almost on par, the difference is that the iPhone 6s is slightly more fragile due to the mineral glass. But otherwise everything is the same. As well as the ergonomics of the devices are comparable, EDGE gains in screen diagonal with practically the same size and less weight.

I love both devices, they have no compromises in terms of materials, this is the best you can find on the market today.

The fingerprint is equally implemented in these models, reacts to touch, does not work on wet surfaces. The unlocking speed is about the same, in Everyday life there are no differences.

Screen Comparison - 4.7 "vs 5.1"

Let's take a look at the table that shows the characteristics of the screens and compare them on paper.

Samsung has consistently improved its own screens, reduced their power consumption and made them better in all aspects of their work. The company is a technology leader in this field. Even a comparison of the characteristics on paper shows that the screen resolution and its diagonal are larger, the backlight brightness is higher, which allows you to read on the screen even in the bright sun or see the picture in the viewfinder as it will then be displayed in the gallery, after you take a photo. Apple does not have these technologies, and the company has nowhere to purchase them. The difference between devices in this aspect is huge, it can be safely described as a difference in several generations, read, years. This situation has been persisting for a couple of years, in different products of companies, the gap in Apple cannot be reduced in any way.

In everyday use, if you don't compare screens directly, you will most likely be satisfied with both the first and the second device. Moreover, I will say a seditious thought - if you switch to these devices from the models of previous seasons, the improvement in the quality of the screen will become noticeable in any case. But if you are still going to compare them directly and choose which is better, then you should remember about several serious differences. In EDGE, as in all devices with SuperAMOLED, there is a setting for improving the brightness depending on the conditions (the conditions mean both ambient light and the content that you are watching). For example, in a browser, when viewing pages, the white color on the iPhone will be different, but on the Note it gives off a little yellowness - this is not a screen problem at all, but an initial setting that was made to reduce eye fatigue and increase the device's operating time.

The marketing term Retina means that in an outstretched hand, you, having 100% vision, will not be able to see the mesh of the screen, that is, individual dots. Both devices fit this definition well. But the general impression of the texts in the browser on EDGE is better, the fonts are smoother - you can see it with ease in a photo, in real life you cannot distinguish it, even looking closely. But there is a difference, and it is felt.

Apple iPhone 6s / Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Runtime - Battery

It is impossible to come to the forehead when comparing the operating time of devices, based on the capacity of the battery, because the operating time depends on the performance of the processor, the operating time of the screen and the brightness of its backlight, and other characteristics of the phone. Historically, the iPhone has been thought to be a smartphone that lasts a long time. As a rule, it was based on the fact that a small iPhone screen did not consume as much power, while Android smartphones have gone far both in resolution and diagonally. In 2015, these parameters were partially leveled, the power consumption in the iPhone is lower for many tasks, but the battery is also smaller.

The battery capacity in 6s is 1750 mAh (Li-Pol), in EDGE - 2600 mAh. The difference is big, but is it really that big in everyday life? I want to make a reservation right away that the utility that is in iOS9 and shows the operating time of the device for the last 24 hours is almost inapplicable in order to estimate the real operating time, in Android the system utility that shows the power consumption is much better and more informative. Moreover, Apple has traditionally misled consumers by showing battery life as a sum of screen and background processes, which in past years led many to believe that 6-7 hours is screen time. In fact, this is not the case. However, you can calculate the operating time of the screen yourself, summing up each line, and see how long the phone worked.

Video playback time on iPhone is up to 10 hours, on EDGE - about 12.5 hours. With the same screen brightness settings. But such a head-on comparison is rather artificial, since in life we use different capabilities of the phone, write messages, make calls, connect a headset to the device and listen to music.

For almost three weeks, I have been using these two devices daily, trying to achieve roughly comparable workloads. The task is not an easy one, I changed SIM-cards every day in order to create approximately the same conditions. And here are the conclusions I came to.

First, the runtime for these two devices is about the same in real-world use cases. The benefits of EDGE in some scenarios (video, data transfer) are not overwhelming, they are described in a 20-25% increase in operating time. For example, this can be seen when distributing the Internet to other devices. With an average load of smartphones, they will work from morning to evening, with heavy use in the tail and mane, they will last until lunchtime. The impression is that they are very close in terms of operating time, it is impossible to name a clear winner here.

Secondly, it is worth noting that if the phones are not in use the best time the iPhone will show the work, it actually freezes and does nothing. Therefore, if your phone is lying for a long time (a week or so), then you will like the iPhone. This is rather a flaw in Android, which constantly rushes to transfer something in the background.

Of the minuses of the iPhone, I would like to note a very long charge, 2-2.5 hours before full capacity. Of course you can take Charger from the iPad, but this will negatively impact battery capacity and life. EDGE has fast adaptive charging (corresponding charger included). In 15 minutes, you can get 25 percent of the charge, which is convenient and allows you to charge the device on the go, in those moments when you find yourself near the outlet. Complete freedom with charging pampers, I lost the habit of charging my phone at night, now I do it only when I need it and when it is convenient for me.

Built-in wireless charging is also a big plus, the iPhone has nothing like this. This is, of course, an additional option, and it is not the most important, but sometimes in public places where there are such chargers, this allows you to recharge the device in a short time.

In iOS9, power saving settings appeared, they cut off data transfer, make the interface slower, in a word, remove all unnecessary. But they cannot drastically increase the operating time. EDGE has several power saving modes, and in the extreme version, we get hours of work for calls and SMS, as the screen goes gray and consumes almost no energy. This is simply not possible for an IPS display on an iPhone.

Another point worth mentioning. The iPhone 6s has a processor from Samsung time much less work, you can read about it in detail.

My device has a processor manufactured by TSMC, so the comparability of the models in terms of operating time with EDGE applies only to this configuration. If you have an iPhone 6s with a Samsung processor, it will run 15-20 percent less. It is worth remembering this.

Performance, chipsets, RAM

I am not familiar with people who buy phones without regard to their cost. It so happened that Apple fans are very proud of how the processors in the iPhone are optimized, how many virtual parrots they show in virtual tests and how they bypass other solutions in terms of performance in terms of one processor core. But the problem is that a person buys a complete solution in which there are already so many processor cores and such and such a performance. It is the choice of each company how to optimize its device - to focus on optimizing old hardware and achieve high performance through the OS (Apple) or to create the most productive solution, the power of which will be enough for any task (Samsung).

If the difference in the stuffing would also affect the cost of the solution, then any comparisons would be appropriate. But in a situation where a hardware-rich solution is cheaper, there is no point in complaining that the performance in virtual parrots is somehow different. This is just nonsense that is interesting to a very limited circle of people who are trying to show that their favorite manufacturer is better. This approach has nothing to do with real use cases.

In real life, the performance of these two solutions has no or almost no differences. The opening speed of applications is about the same. The implementation of RAM differs, for example, the iPhone has a limit on the number open tabs in a browser, there can't be a hundred or so, as is allowed on Android. Do you need so many tabs? It depends on you. V latest versions Android uses app reloads when opened from memory, they are restored to the same state as they were. But it often takes time. On an iPhone, recent apps load faster, unless you've launched something gluttonous. In everyday life, the difference is almost imperceptible, if you do not sit with a stopwatch in hand.

Now for an important note regarding iOS9. In 2014, I wrote that the quality of iOS, starting from version 7, has been consistently decreasing, in version 8 we have already seen a sufficient number of shortcomings, it was not accepted in the best way. But the 9th version overshadowed everything that came before. At the moment, my iPhone 6s is already working on version 9.1, but a bunch of small and not so much problems have not been fixed. What are at least the disappearing signals for messages in different programs, they that is, then they are not. This is a basic feature found in any phone, and it works there. There is also a lottery, sometimes there is a sound, sometimes it disappears. Software error. As one iPhone fan wrote, he got into the habit of checking his phone for messages every 15 minutes. I think this is idiocy.

There is also a problem with CapsLock, when letters in the keyboard jump randomly. They have not been able to fix it for a long time.

With the release of 9.1, which was supposed to remove many of the problems, they only got worse. Visual glitches and window overlays began to appear in the interface.

An example of how mail works on my phone, although you could rather say that it does not work.

Well, a cherry can be considered the fact that when the Wifi phone often downloads data over the mobile network. The iOS9 version is just something, and its quality is far from anything that can be called a stable system. Unfortunately, I cannot compare it with Android 5.1 on EDGE, since on the latter I always hear notifications, the interface is not buggy and there are no other "little things". It should be noted here that Apple's ignorance of the basic principles of software development, which they had in previous years, led to such sad consequences. While the fans of the company defend her, promising that they will soon fix everything, ordinary people begin to wonder if the king is naked. It's impossible to describe iOS9 in any words, it's just a disaster.

Cameras, comparison of photo quality

I'll start with the front camera. For the first time, the iPhone has received a new high-resolution front camera, it is 5 megapixels. Exactly the same camera resolution in Samsung, but there are a few differences. For example, Samsung traditionally has customizable Beauty Face functions, it removes skin imperfections and can make your face glossy.

iPhone 6S Galaxy S6 Edge

The girls are delighted with this opportunity, they really like it. Everyone else, I think, doesn't care, unless you love taking selfies.

When recording video on the front camera, the quality is approximately comparable, it does not differ dramatically.

  • Sample video to the front camera (Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge) (MP4, 26 MB) >>>
  • Sample video to the front camera (Apple iPhone 6S) (MP4, 26 MB) >>>

For the iPhone, the new front-facing camera is a huge step forward, as cameras were quite mediocre in quality until recently. Now they are at the market level, but nothing more.

Now let's look at the main camera, they differ in resolution, in Samsung the matrix is 16 megapixels, in the iPhone - 12 megapixels. But, as you know, it is not the resolution that determines the quality of the images, but the algorithm for processing information from the matrix. From the point of view of everyday use, pictures from iPhone and EDGE will be comparable in most cases, the slight superiority of EDGE on the phone screen will not be noticeable in any way, and almost no one is looking at pictures on a PC. There is less information in iPhone shots, you can't zoom them in the same way as with EDGE, but, again, very few people need it. Applied to the phone or social networks both devices give quite tolerable, high-quality images, they can be assessed at the same level. If you dig into the details, it turns out that there are more possibilities on EDGE, you can set up your camera mode (Pro Mode), select each of the settings and get fundamentally different photos. It's like auto mode on soap dishes, where you point the camera and shoot, you can compare with a professional camera, the second is needed by units, as well as to get a high-quality result, they usually cannot, they simply cannot. I would like to emphasize that the advanced capabilities of the camera in EDGE may not be used, "point and shoot" is valid here as well.

I propose to look at the photos at night and during the day, I am sure that you will not see much difference.

iPhone 6S Galaxy S6 Edge

As before, I advocate for the iPhone, that is, I interpret any comparison in its favor, even where there is a small loss. The reason for this is to neutralize the fact that I use EDGE every day and know this product well.

Communication capabilities

Formally, we are again faced with a two-world approach - in one there is Apple, using standard and open technologies, but turning them into closed options that are incompatible with other platforms. And there is Android, where everything is implemented as conveniently as possible.

The iPhone has an NFC chip, but it is only used for ApplePay payments (it works in a limited number of places and not in Russia). Accordingly, you cannot use NFC to manage tags, pairing with one-touch accessories, for example, with an external wireless speaker or headset, on the iPhone. It's a very handy technology, but the iPhone doesn't have it - it's in the EDGE.

Another point is the standards, EDGE uses Bluetooth 4.1, which better implements control external devices... As a result, they will last longer on a single charge. The iPhone was tricky with Bluetooth, so every OS update is like a minefield, problems often start where they weren't.

The devices from Samsung, and Note are no exception, they are completely omnivorous, they work with all devices, and there are no problems as such.

I also note that the support Wi-Fi Direct allows you to transfer large files to other devices, including smartphones. AirDrop implementation is much worse from all points of view, and it is much more difficult to set up. It either works, or you just suffer, not understanding what you are doing wrong.

From the point of view of the noise reduction system, these are equivalent devices, two microphones and approximately the same location, the algorithm of operation. There were no problems while using the phones.

Radiation level, SAR value

Both devices work in the same Russian networks, it is interesting to see what the radiation level is, namely SAR value... You can see the value for iPhone 6s for Russia here at this link.

For EDGE SAR data can be found.

Traditionally, in the iPhone, the radio part emits more, this has already become a tradition. It has not been scientifically proven how radiation affects the human body, we can only say that this parameter is twice as large in the iPhone. Please note that if you are worried and know for sure that radiation is harmful, then you should use a headset and, if possible, do not carry your phone in your pockets. And it is advisable to completely abandon it.

The price of the issue and the final conclusions

Comparing these flagships, all the time I interpreted any discrepancies in favor of the iPhone, as they say about examiners, pulling it by the ears. Someone will say that the iPhone does not need this, but I disagree. In many little things, this product loses, and the number of such little things is great, if you combine them.

Unfortunately, there is not a single technology in the iPhone 6s that would make the use of this device different, brought it to the leaders in the market and allowed it to overtake the same EDGE. The device is quite secondary, after Samsung, Apple began to use the 7000 series of aluminum, in response to the scandal with bendable phones, which, in my opinion, was far-fetched and in reality there was no such problem.

Many here can say that the iPhone screen has new technology 3D Touch, which is not found in any other device. I interviewed all my acquaintances who use the latest generation of iPhone, the answers amazed me. Most people just don't know what it is and how to work with it. The remaining 20 percent were tried once and then spat, it is inconvenient and incomprehensible where it works and where it does not. There is no habit of such technology, which means that its presence or absence does not in any way affect the perception of the device. I also do not remember the infrared port in S6 / S6 EDGE for control household appliances since it can also be considered a counter, which is not very important.

For Russia, it is also worth noting that the iPhone 6s does not have frequency aggregation, that is, the maximum speed in LTE will be limited, this can be fixed with new firmware in the future, so this moment cannot be considered fundamental.

For an ordinary consumer in the device, several points are important - the operating time (the same, but it is charged faster than EDGE, plus there is wireless charging), the quality and size of the screen (EDGE is ahead by a wide margin in every sense), the camera (EDGE is a little better for those who know how to shoot, all other differences will not be felt), the quality of the body materials (comparable, but mineral glass the iPhone is cheaper and easier to beat). But there is one more parameter that can be called the most important, this is the cost of devices.

So, the price for the iPhone 6s 16GB in Russia starts at 57,000 rubles. The usual Galaxy S6 costs 38,000 rubles, EDGE - 44,000 rubles (prices in the official stores of the companies). It turns out that buying a Galaxy S6, you get a device that costs 19 thousand rubles cheaper, and buying an EDGE, you will save 13 thousand rubles. It is also worth remembering that the basic version of the S6 / S6 EDGE does not have 16 GB of memory, but exactly twice as much - 32 GB.

In my opinion, taking into account that the iPhone 6s does not have a single real, visible advantage over these two models, and the number of bloopers and errors in iOS9 exceeds reasonable limits, the choice is obvious. On the other hand, there are a large number of people who do not know how to choose and stop only at a brand that they know and overpay for it. This is their choice and their money, you cannot condemn them for buying what they like. But it is also impossible to consider their choice reasonable at least in some way, they buy a technologically weaker product for a lot of money. That being said, as shown above, in terms of use cases, the iPhone does not provide any advantage other than the feeling of having an iPhone. However, in Russia, most of the people have already made their choice, and since the start of sales of the iPhone 6s, it has not been able to overtake EDGE and S6 in sales, these models are sold in larger quantities.

But this material simply compares the main points in the devices, shows which of them is strong in a particular area, and you can draw conclusions yourself. In the end, it’s for you to buy a phone with your own money, and then you vote with a ruble.

P.S. Since such materials always cause hysterics among fans from the two camps, I have a big request, if you are comparing something, do it by examples and indicating the facts, otherwise the discussion will not work out.

This year we saw new smartphone from Samsung with a curved screen on the sides, and it looks as stunning as never before. The company has not made significant changes to Galaxy design S7 Edge compared to its predecessor. Now it not only looks more sophisticated, but also fits more comfortably in the hand. As you would expect, the novelty has the best hardware: the Exynos 8890, 4GB of RAM, a large 5.5-inch Super AMOLED screen and an impressive camera.

Its biggest competitor is, of course, the Apple iPhone 6S Plus, a larger version of the flagship iPhone 6S. And now we will try to make a fair comparison of these phablets, and tell why Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge better than Apple iPhone 6S Plus. Thus, we will tell you about the main advantages and disadvantages of both devices.

Why Galaxy S7 Edge is better than iPhone 6S Plus:

1. The best ratio screen to body

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has insanely thin bezels around the screen, and its ratio to body is about 76%. This means that despite the 5.5-inch display, the phone is still more compact than its competitor. The iPhone 6S Plus has a 67.9% screen-to-body ratio and the difference is noticeable when compared side-by-side.

2. Multitasking
The smartphone from Samsung boasts excellent multitasking capabilities. Thanks to the new capabilities of the operating system and a large amount of RAM, you can open several applications at the same time and display them on one screen. What's more, on additional panels Edge versions it is possible to scroll through the feed with news and other content, as well as add contacts, favorite programs and tools such as a compass or a flashlight. Apple, unfortunately, only introduced these features on its tablets.

3. Always-on display function
Anyone who has ever used a device in the iPhone line may have noticed that you cannot see the presence of new notifications without unlocking the screen. Many gadgets on Android platform use LED indicators that indicate the receipt of new messages, for example. Along with the next generation of flagships in the Galaxy S range, Samsung has introduced a new, easier-to-use Always On Screen feature. It allows you to get acquainted with such important information as the current time, missed calls or messages and much more, without even picking up the phone.

4. Capacious battery, wireless charging
A lot of consumers keep repeating that we don't need thin phones, we want bigger batteries, and Samsung seems to have heard them. The Galaxy S7 Edge is almost 1mm thicker than the Galaxy S6 Edge + (7.7mm vs. 6.9mm) and has a large 3600mAh battery. In combination with Android Marshmallow and optimizations hardware mobile device, we expect to see phenomenal battery life. The Apple iPhone 6S Plus has a noticeably smaller battery (2750 mAh), although, let's be honest, the iOS operating system is optimized just fine. In the end, the South Korean manufacturer's flagship received support for wireless charging, while the Cupertinians abandoned this solution in their flagship.

5. Expandable memory
In the last generation Galaxy devices S, the manufacturer has returned the microSD card slot, which means only one thing - users can expand the amount of available memory up to 200 GB. The iPhone 6S Plus, in turn, lacks this feature, although many users of models with 16 GB onboard would be happy to expand the internal storage.

Surprisingly, this year the South Korean manufacturer really managed to impress us. The successor to the Galaxy S6 Edge boasts both hardware and software. Probably, new Galaxy S7 Edge will become the best flagship this year.
