All of these operating systems are developed by Western (mainly American) organizations. At first glance, a Russian person has nowhere to cast his gaze ... but no. We also have our own masters.

We are already accustomed to the fact that information technologies for Russia are not a subject of creativity, but a subject of passive study. Yes, we know a world-class antivirus from Kaspersky, or at the moment the best text recognizer FineReader is also from a Russian company. Someone will remember Dr.Web. But in the general context, this is, if not a drop, then a small puddle in the sea that makes up our computer horizon. This illusion is erroneous because not all active members of the IT community are evaluated, but only those who actively promote themselves through advertising or sales managers. And who is outside our horizons? Yes, tens of thousands of domestic developers of different levels of professionalism and different areas of tasks to be solved.

It's no secret that the most important component of any computer (except for the hardware inside the case) is the operating system. But do we have here what to look after ourselves from the domestic? Browsers for amateurs from different camps (Firefox and Chromium) , a client capable of connecting to ICQ and QIP, recording utilities bootable USB drives and disks. If necessary, we can re-install Skype, TeamViewer and other useful programs through a convenient and concise program installer (most programs are installed and updated through this single tool without the need to manually update).

And even with all the massiveness of the pre-installed set of programs, ROSA manages to load and shut down faster than the products of the Redmond corporation. And the problem of viruses will only bother those who purposefully install them into the system. They cannot appear “suddenly” on the computer.

With all this, the system has many unique features for the Windows user. What is just the ability to distribute WiFi Internet from your laptop in two clicks or the ability, after turning on the "freeze mode", to scoff with experiments on the system, and then after rebooting, see the system in a "pre-frozen" state.

To do this, it is enough to boot into a full-fledged operating system directly from a CD-ROM or flash drive, without installing the system (unusual, right?). Another advantage of the Russian OS is an active and accessible Russian-speaking community.

Many believe that there is no Russian software (software), or very little. Or in general, it is limited to Kaspersky Anti-Virus. I decided to find out what is the current state of Russian software.

So, all software, figuratively speaking, is divided into operating systems, application software and special or system software. Let's start with operating systems (OS).

OS

Currently, OSs are divided into two big camps - Windows and non-Windows. Everyone knows Windows OS, in fact, everyone has it at home. It also stands in state institutions. And then the question arises about its security regarding the information stored in it. No matter how the FSB checks for built-in bookmarks, this OS is constantly updated. And it's not a fact that along with the next update some spy routine won't come. And there is simply nothing to fix it with.

There are many Linux-based operating systems. They differ only in the set of built-in software and various chips "from the manufacturer". There is also a price difference, oddly enough, for this free software. The free version of Linux OS is positioned as "download, install and master it as you want." But there are also paid versions, the payment is taken for supporting the performance of a specific OS version and solving operational problems. I will not compare the cost of owning an OS on Windows and Linux, there are enough articles on this topic.

Let's go back to the Russian OS. Several Russian versions of the OS were created on the basis of Linux, including server versions. However, not all of them are approved for use in government agencies. Specifically for such enterprises, there is an OS "ROSA" based on Linux with several variants - "Chrome", "Cobalt", "Nickel". These are the names of the OS family certified by the FSTEC of Russia for use in government agencies. I will give the characteristics of one of the options, OS "Cobalt". The data was taken from the site of LLC "STC IT ROSA".

The operating system ROSA "COBALT" is certified by the FSTEC of Russia in desktop and server versions, it is used by commercial structures, industrial enterprises and government bodies that work with confidential information, including personal data.

It is recommended to use in automated systems of a level not higher than 1G. There is also a free version called ROSA Desktop Fresh. That is, we actually have an OS. In general, there is no need to create your own OS from scratch, this will result in huge investments in both OS development and implementation.

Application software

Let's list what is heard or is often used, but people do not pay attention to the fact that this software is Russian. For critics: this is not an advertisement for companies, this is a listing of what is actually supplied, including for export.

Two very widespread anti-viruses: "Kaspersky Anti-Virus" and "Dr. Web". They are even sold abroad, and they are very willing to take them.

Navigation systems and modeling of aircraft and sea vehicles - Transas company. Products and solutions are exported.

Automation of telecommunications companies - CBOSS company.

Virtualization and Automation Software - Parallels.

Electronic dictionaries, OCR-systems for character recognition - probably only lazy people have not heard about Abbyy.

System utilities for hard disk data management and software for mobile devices - Paragon Software Group.

Built-in software for voice, video and data transmission - SPIRIT DSP. Did not hear? Me too, but, as it turned out, there is such a thing.

PROMT, 1C are also well-known companies. True, they are in demand only on the territory of the former USSR.

But the office suite is tight, it is mainly used OpenOffice or LibreOffice as a free competitor for MS Office.

System software

This special software is mainly created and used in some narrow areas. Moreover, the difference in software is significant, there are entire operating systems, there are also simple "firmware" for controlling highly specialized controllers. For the most part, there is little information about such systems, some are classified, some are for too narrow areas, some are simply not interesting from the point of view of implementation.

"Military" operating systems, which refer to special software, are developed by JSC "VNIINS". These are the WSWS (Mobile System of the Armed Forces), OMONIM and OLIVIA. The main general purpose platform is MSWS, which, like the other two operating systems, is based on Linux. The system is intended for building stationary secure automated systems and has been supplied to the Russian Armed Forces since 2002. Based on the requirements of the Armed Forces, the OS is focused both on protection against unauthorized access and on the absence of undeclared capabilities. As a multitasking network operating system, MSWS runs on Intel, Sparc and MIPS hardware platforms.

OLIVIA is an OS version for building secure automated mobile-based systems, and OMONIM is a stationary system for mainframes.

Another military OS is PTS-DOS (a familiar name for oldfags, isn't it?), Developed by Fiztech-Soft. This OS, distinguished by its compactness (fits on one floppy disk), is presented in two versions - PTS-DOS 32 and PTS-DOS 2000. This OS is compatible with MS-DOS and is optimized for saving memory. The package includes LotLAN peer-to-peer local network and all basic utilities.

With the DBMS everything is a little worse, but they are being developed by the same VNIINS company. Two systems, which are also designed for the armed forces, are embedded in their own operating systems, which were discussed above.

The Pallada system is a secure object-oriented DBMS intended for the automated control system of the mobile-based armed forces. "Pallada" operates in the environment of WSWS and OLIVIA. Another DBMS, Linter-VS, is a relational DBMS for ACS. This system only works in the WSWS environment.

The Nika DBMS, developed on the basis of the Soviet INES system, is now owned by Cognitive Technologies. This hierarchical DBMS is built into other products of the company. "Nika" is the basis for the document circulation system "Euphrates-Document circulation" and the information and reference system "NIKA-Museum". At the same time, the company does not distribute the DBMS in a separate package.

As for the machines, everything is not very happy here, but also not very sad. Not so long ago I was surprised to learn that in Astrakhan, in addition to shipbuilding, there is also a production of CNC machines. The software of these machines is highly dependent on controllers and other electronics used to control the machine. Therefore, it is used as Russian controllers, and foreign ones.

findings

In general, we can say that there are no special breakthroughs. Basically, Russian software is used in specialized and proprietary military products. A certain share in application software and antiviruses is expressed as a mere percentage of the use of foreign software.

Unfortunately, the complication of electronics, machine tools, other equipment and mechanisms for the production of high-tech products does not make it possible to completely switch to Russian software. Purely for technical reasons.

Already that the most powerful processors Intel and AMD are not produced by us, they do not provide an opportunity to create a Russian OS "for home". It just doesn't make sense.

Now MCST is entering the market with its line of Elbrus processors. More precisely, these processors have been around for a long time, but their wide advertising has begun only now. Software is also developed there. But again, the Elbrus OS is based on the Linux kernel.

In general, neither wobbly nor roll. Where necessary, there is Russian, where you can get by - foreign. Only here is often "where necessary" is replaced by "you can do it." And this often leads to problems.
