SEO for Dummies or What if you don't know what a SEO is? SEO Basics for Beginners Seo Promotion for Dummies.
Now I will show you SEO way DIY promotion, which I used to promote my site to 5,000 unique visitors per day in just 9 months. Moreover, I promoted my site from scratch, exclusively independently and for free.
I called this method "Striking site promotion". It differs in many ways from what is usually offered as a "recipe for SEO promotion". But the main thing is that it works, and you can repeat it.
Within the framework of this article, we will talk about website promotion with the help of articles. That is, we will not buy any links. Exceptionally white safe methods - they wrote an article, optimized it, brought it to the TOP, repeated this scheme 50-100 times. That's all the promotion =)
And the very first step is finding the right keyword for your article.
Step # 1 - Selecting Key Queries "in a Million"
I hope you are already aware that you cannot write articles on the site “just like that”. It is imperative that you choose in advance a specific key query for which you will optimize your article. For example, this article is optimized for the query “do-it-yourself seo promotion”. Therefore, I put these phrases in the title.
Without this, search robots simply won't understand what your article is about. Although they are very smart, they are still robots.
And our task with you is to select key queries that:
- Have a large number of monthly requests (otherwise you will have to write 1000 articles to see at least some traffic);
- Have low competition (otherwise it will be almost impossible for you to break into the TOP);
- They have good prospects for "career growth" (more on that below).
Collecting a pool of such keywords is called semantic core compilation. And if it seems to you that it is difficult and time-consuming, it seems to you correctly. But it’s better to spend a couple of weeks picking 30 queries now than to spend a couple of years writing articles and never get anywhere.
The ultimate keyword research tool
Let's say we want to write an article that blogging is very cool and awesome. We come up with such a title for the article - "Why do I need to blog." It would seem that the topic will certainly be of interest to a wide range of readers.
But to check, we first go to Yandex.Wordstat... This is a free tool that will immediately show you the exact popularity of a particular query. Enter the selected key into the line and click "Pick".
As you can see in the screenshot above, this request has 0 page views per month. So no one is looking for him, and no one needs him. Please note that I put the request in quotation marks. This is how Yandex.Wordstat shows the exact frequency. If you leave the query without quotes, then it will show completely incorrect numbers.
We conclude that the key request needs to be changed. But what is the best way to formulate it? We begin to enter our main word “blog” into the Wordstat line and add question words - “how”, “what”, “why”.
And here we already get a very wide field for activity. We take each keyword that we like and put it in quotes to check the exact frequency. As a result, we get:
Now that's another matter. If our article is in the TOP by request for 1500 impressions per month, then we will definitely get good traffic. But this is not the end of the story. Are we sure we will be able to break into the first places for this request? Let's now turn to another tool.
SEO Competition Checker Tool
To check the level of competition among requests, we will use a service called " Mutagen". It is paid, but every day you can do 10 free checks. And paid checks are very inexpensive - a few kopecks apiece.
The essence of this service in that he compares many different indicators of sites that are in the first places in the search results for a particular query, and concludes how easy or difficult it will be to move these sites.
For example, we take the same query that we found with you - "what is a blog", enter it into the Mutagen check line and press Enter.
This query shows competition "over 25". This is the maximum level of competition that Mutagen shows. That is, it will be as difficult as possible to break into the TOP for this key. This does not suit us.
If your resource is not yet highly promoted, then it is better to choose keywords with a competition level of 5-7 or even lower. So what do we do with this theme? Give up the idea and write an article about something else?
Not at all necessary. Now we need to try to reformulate the request so that the level of competition will decrease significantly, and the number of requests will not drop very much. And the first thing you should try to do is lengthen the keyword with additional words.
Now that's better. Suppose this query variant has only 28 page views per month. It is better to take it for the article, because it has a level of competition of only 7. If you come out on top for this key, then it is likely that Yandex will put you in the TOP on a broader basis.
Many people believe that the more words in a keyword, the less views it will have (because people are too lazy to enter long keys with their hands). But as you can see, this is not always the case. We lengthened our key even further, and got a competition level of only 4, and almost 200 net views.
This is the perfect key to writing an article. We dwell on it and move on to the next stage - writing an article that deserves first place in the TOP.
Step # 2 - writing armor-piercing articles
The amount of money in your pocket is directly related to the amount of traffic on your website. And the amount of traffic depends on the number of articles you have posted. The more articles, the more traffic. Everyone knows this, but for some reason the articles are still “not written”.
And here I will give you a couple of life hacks that will help you write less and get more traffic.
Write yourself or hire a copywriter?
I recommend all content site owners to write articles on their own resource. So you will immediately bypass numerous competitors who are hiring copywriters for this business. Here's my opinion - a copywriter will never write an article well enough.
Firstly, he is not an expert in the topic for which you made your site. This will be immediately noticeable by the amount of "water" and banal advice in the articles.
Secondly, the copywriter is not the owner of the site, and he will not kill himself much in order for the article to be really high-quality and sufficiently voluminous.
And thirdly, what is called "copywriting" today is actually rewriting in 95% of cases. That is, a freelancer takes several articles on a given topic, crosses them together, adds some water, and that's it. Even if different services for checking the uniqueness of the text show "95-100% uniqueness" of such texts - Yandex and Google have their own verification algorithms.
Non-unique content is something that search engines are now actively fighting against. And if you start doing the way no one else does (that is, writing unique author's articles with really valuable content on your own), you will be immediately noticed and put in the TOP.
Write long or short articles?
One of the questions that I am asked most often sounds something like this: “Dmitry, why are you writing such long articles on the site? Nobody reads them. ” In fact, they do. And the longer the article, the more an average person spends on the site (within reasonable limits, of course).
I can name at least 5 reasons why you also need to write long articles:
- Search robots think logically. And if they see that you have a 1500 word article, and all other articles on this topic are 700 words, he concludes that your article has 2 times more information on the topic. It is logical. Accordingly, it will at least give people the opportunity to "try" it.
- The longer your article, the more words and phrases on the topic you use in it. And this gives what is called "tail traffic". That is, 80% of traffic will not be brought to you by the main key request, but by a lot of small queries that users search for 1-2 times a month.
- Even just leafing through a long article to the end takes time. Accordingly, this greatly reduces the bounce rate - when a visitor has spent less than 10-15 seconds on your site. And this is a very important indicator of the quality of the site.
- By publishing long articles on the site, you immediately show search engines that this is author's content, and not just another copywriting (more on this below).
- An article with 1.5-2000 words is very difficult to over-optimize. Even if you use the main key a dozen times in the article, it will be very easy optimization against the background of the total volume of the text. And the search engines will have no reason to think that you are trying to deceive them.
About the fourth item on this list. My articles are usually 2000 words or more. This is an average of 14-15 thousand characters. Today, a more or less normal copywriter on the exchange charges 70 - 80 rubles for 1000 rewriting signs. In total, to get an article with 15,000 characters, you will have to pay 1200 rubles.
This is too much for a content site. Given the quality of copywriting, you need 300 - 600 articles to start getting meaningful traffic. These are too high expenses. Therefore, all webmasters who write articles as "copywriters" order texts for 3-4 thousand characters, no more. And so search engines immediately distinguish them from those who write on their own.
And therefore, we will not need 300-600 articles. My site came out to 5000 visitors per day with only 30 great author's articles. That is, you do not have to worry that you will have to spend several hours all your life, every day, to write huge articles.
It will be enough for you to write only a dozen articles, as I indicated above, and you will already have more traffic than others get from hundreds of articles. But for this we need to help our article a little more after you wrote it.
Step # 3 - Quick access to the TOP
Turnkey article optimization
After you have written an article, you need to do some light optimization (without fanaticism). To do this, take the main keyword for which the article is written and place it in the following places:
- In the heading H1;
- In an SEO title called "title";
- At the very beginning of the article (preferably in the first sentence);
- In the alt tag and in image captions;
- In the URL of your article;
- Subheading H2;
- In the middle and at the end of the article.
This will be quite enough for Yandex and Google to understand what your article is about and for what key query it wants to compete. Now all that remains is to wait for the verdict of the search engines.
Accelerating the entry of the article to the TOP
It usually takes 2-3 months for the article to "brew" enough and take its place in the TOP of search engines. But you can also speed up this process. Then your articles can be in the first places in just 5-10 minutes after you click the "Publish" button.
For example, here is my article in the TOP-5 7 minutes after publication:
To achieve the same result, here's what you need to do:
- Write and publish articles every day in certain time... If Yandex notices that new material appears on your site every day at 12 noon, it will soon start sending its special robot to your site by 12 noon exactly. This is the so-called "fast robot", whose task is to quickly index new and relevant materials.
- After the article is published, go to Yandex.Webmaster and send your article for revision. This is the so-called "adurilka" Yandex:
- Post links to your new material on all social networks wherever you can: VKontakte, Facebook, Twitter, Google + and others.
- Make a mailing list in your subscriber base with a notification about a new article (if you don't have one yet, it's time to start collecting)
Actually, this is where the main work on website promotion ends. Now you need to repeat this algorithm several dozen times, and your site will first grow to a "thousand", and then to a "ten-thousand". There would be a desire)

Your Dmitry Novosyolov
If you are reading this article, then my SEO is working :) Sooner or later, any blogger comes across the terrible word SEO. The first thought - if I don't know what a CEO is, then I shouldn't pay attention to him, this beast can only be tough for the most seasoned “website promoters”! But the more often the word SEO flashes before your eyes, the faster you realize that if right now you don't start SEO-optimizing your texts, then your own and such a cool blog will NEVER even look at the first page of Yandex search results. And you start looking for the "SEO for Dummies" instruction.
I was looking for her too, to no avail! The Internet offers mainly paid services on seo-promotion, and "budget bloggers" can only collect precious information bit by bit. Today I will share my sacred knowledge with you and tell you how to SEO-optimize your texts, if you don't know what SEO is at all.
What is SEO?
SEO - Search Engine Optimization - search engine optimization.
Search engines are robots. They can't read texts, and it is difficult for them to appreciate your high writing style. Therefore, you should optimize your texts in such a way that search engines (in the Russian market, this is mainly Yandex) understand what you wrote about in general, and decide to display your article in search results or not.
Many people think that SEO is just a selection of keywords. But really, keywords Is just one piece of the pie. In general SEO text optimization- these are keywords + competent writing and design of the text + setting images + high-quality content.
If something is missing, the pie is not complete anymore. And who will display the bitten pie in the window? And search robots do not want to.
If we are talking about SEO optimization of the entire blog, then to the optimization of the texts we must also add the internal and external optimization of the entire site. And this, and the download speed, and the elimination of all internal errors in the work of the site, and an increase in the number of links to your site from other resources and various other things.
But don't be alarmed! Let's eat the elephant piece by piece :) Today I'll tell you right on your fingers about SEO for texts, it's not so difficult, and then we'll think further.
Keywords
Well, yes, you can't do without them. Whatever one may say, but your article can be shown to a potential visitor of your blog only if Yandex understands that it matches the user's request. And he can understand this only by keywords.
The keywords are mathematics. In no case should you invent anything and assume that users can search there on the Internet. Users type specific queries in search engines, and search engines keep track of these queries.
The yandex.wordstat.ru service will help you find the keywords you need. Yandex is not an evil guy who wants to drown your site in an avalanche of competitors. This is a very friendly resource that shares information to help you climb to the first page in the SERP.
Example.
You are a literary blog and want to write an article about what to read from contemporary authors. Before writing the text, you should go to wordstat and enter the query "modern authors" into the search bar.
What you need to pay attention to:
How many times a month users generally enter the query "modern authors" - this is the first line. In our case, we see the figure of 22,368 people. This query is quite popular, and there are probably serious literary portals (online stores) in the top for this query that use paid means promotion. We shouldn't compete with them, we will go the other way and find similar, but less popular queries.
In our case, less popular queries are “authors of contemporary novels” or “contemporary Russian authors”. They are recruited by only 1-3 thousand people, so here you can already try your luck.
As we can see, there are even less popular queries here, which nevertheless fully correspond to our topic. For example, “modern novels by Russian authors” - 663 people. For this request, it will be even easier to move up to the top.
Well, to make the top ours for sure, we detail the request even more. I scrolled down the page and saw this:
These queries can be used either as the main keyword (it is quite easy to advance on them), or as additional keys that will help to advance on several unpopular queries at once.
Why do we need to promote on unpopular requests? Because the chicken is biting by the grain! By optimizing the article for several unpopular queries, you can quickly and surely rise to the top through them and attract several dozen visitors a month. And if your site has at least 100 correctly optimized articles, then you can get several thousand new readers every month.
What to do with requests?
First of all, from all the unpopular requests, we need to choose the one that will become our main key. In our example, I would take the query "Contemporary novels of Russian authors" or something from this "weight category". We also need to select several additional requests and write out the whole matter on a separate piece of paper.
The next step is to go to regular Yandex and enter our queries into the search bar, paying attention to the prompts that Yandex gives. For example, if you start to enter the query "modern authors" into the search box, then Yandex will offer a ready-made continuation of the phrase: and their works, fiction, detective stories, etc. This information can be used both as ideas for disclosing a topic, and as additional keywords, because in fact, this is nothing more than frequent user requests.
Having chosen as many keywords as possible in this way, you can sit down to write an article.
Your task is as follows:
- the main query should be used UNChanged in the title of the article, in the first and last paragraph of the article, organically (!) entering it into the sentences.
- use additional queries in any form, in any case, anywhere in the text.
What if I'm a creative person and can't write to the query plan?
I am the same too. Therefore, I first come up with the topic of the article, then I select the main query, then I write the text as my creative nature requires.
When the first draft of the text is ready, I sit down at the editorial office and, where possible, insert my keywords. Yes, the selection of synonyms is not exactly what a beginner blogger dreams of, but this is a CEO, baby :) What is more important to you that your masterpiece remains gathering dust in the backyards of the Internet, or that your cool article is put on the first shelf in the first line in Yandex?
No matter how hard you try to find the right keywords, your article will never make it to the TOP if it is useless. Today, to become popular, you have to be a professional in your field.
You should:
- carefully choose the topics of articles, they should be interesting to your readers (it is better to have a plan of articles for a couple of months in advance)
- fully disclose the topic
- write long articles of 3000 characters or more (the number of characters can be checked in a regular Word editor, Review tab, Statistics section).
- give readers more than they expect to read
- write detailed instructions, share experiences, contacts, useful resources, etc.
Try to be interesting to your readers. After all, the longer a visitor stays on your blog, the higher Yandex will raise you next time. Yes, he tracks it too :)
Text design for SEO
When our cool article is written and stuffed with keywords (organically inscribed in the text!), We proceed to editing errors and design.
If your literacy suffers, it is better to check the text for errors on one of the relevant online services. It's free and important! Only the most correct articles should be in the top, and not those where all the commas are "author's".
Also, the text should be easy to read, that is, you should:
- break the text into paragraphs (try to have no more than 3-4 lines in each paragraph)
- space between paragraphs
- use lists and tables
- use subheadings
- insert links to other articles on your blog into the text (this is called interlinking, it can be done using a special plugin Inline Related PRO)
What not to do:
- highlight all your keywords in bold and italics - Yandex can count this as over-optimization and downgrade your site in the search results,
- do not use many different fonts and text colors - this makes it difficult to read.
How to format subheadings correctly
This point is very important because a subheading is not just a bold section title.
Yandex can determine the title of an article and subheadings only if you tell it where they are located.
When you decide to arrange some text in the form of a subheading, you should put the cursor on the corresponding text and find the "paragraph" section on the toolbar, inside select, for example, HEADING 2.
Accordingly, if within one heading you need to split the text into even smaller parts, you should use Heading 3 and so on. Heading 1 in the text can be used only 1 time!
It is also highly desirable to use keywords in subheadings, then Yandex will understand exactly what you are writing about.
SEO-optimization of images
Pictures are another component of SEO promotion. It is highly desirable that the pictures on your site / blog are not heavy (up to 100 kb, otherwise the site will take a long time to load, which is bad for SEO) and unique, and not downloaded from the Internet. Where to find so many pictures:
- try to use your own photos more often
- in accordance with the theme of the text, you can use screenshots (screen photos) instead of pictures. For example, in this article all the pictures are screenshots of my control panel.
- you can find an interesting video on the network and in the right place pause it and take a screenshot - so you get a unique picture :)
- use the online editor canva.com - this resource offers a large number of free modern templates for decorating pictures and photos for blogs, social networks, etc. The uploaded images become unique. Try it, you won't regret it.
Once you've selected an image and uploaded it to your blog, you need to add a title and alt attribute to it. This is not difficult:)
- We write the title of the picture, preferably in Latin letters. It is quite possible that this will be your keyword.
- We write the alt attribute - this is a unique description of our picture on the site, here it is necessary to register the main keyword with the addition of a photo, picture, etc. It can be written in Russian.
Install the Yoast SEO plugin
It will help you correctly write the description and title of your article.
Decoding:
- Unless you have an online store, then the SEO header can always coincide with the title of your article. It is very important to use your keyword unchanged in the title.
- The snippet is what your post looks like in search results (photo below)
- The label is what is displayed in search bar when a user lands on a page with an article. The label must be written in English letters. You can automate the process of writing a shortcut using the Rus-to-Lat plugin. It is better if your keyword is used in the label.
- Meta Description - A description of what your article is about. It is extremely important to use your keyword in this description unchanged, preferably closer to the beginning of the description.
- Seo header
- Label
- Meta description
All together = snippet. My keyword for this article is "Marry an Egyptian"
Summary
Despite the fact that the article turned out to be long, all the same, SEO for texts is not scary. Here are briefly the main points to watch out for:
- quality and usefulness of content
- selection and correct use of keywords
- correct text formatting (errors, paragraphs, subheadings)
- linking in the text
- correct formatting of images (uniqueness, title and alt attribute)
- Snippet design.
I did not talk about this above, but I think you are setting thumbnails and adding labels for your articles even without my reminders.
By the way, if you are doing everything right, then your article will definitely rise to the top, but not immediately. The length of the journey to the top depends on several factors - how quickly search engines index your articles, how useful content you publish, how you are doing with internal and external blog optimization, and how many competitors you have for this query. On average, you can start checking for an article on the first page of search results 3-6 weeks after publication.
I hope my article helped you understand a little about what SEO is. If you still have any questions, do not hesitate to ask them in the comments! And stay tuned to my blog, sometimes in between articles about hot countries I will tell you about blogging :)
High positions for us in Yandex SERP!
Hello friends.
This post is not about how or where to start promoting your site yourself. And about how to learn seo, where to start studying this area and become a seo-specialist. Of course, this instruction may be useful for those who want to promote their own site, but I do not consider this a worthwhile investment of time, because if you follow the instructions in good faith and read all the information provided, it can take many months, or even a whole year! Personally, I think the business owner should be doing business and strategic planning, not trying to do everything on his own. However, if you are a businessman and still decide to plunge into the subject area (in order to competently control the performer, and not do everything yourself), I recommend that you study the "Theoretical Base" block and stop there.
What prompted me to write this post and who is it for in the first place?
As the founder and head of the studio "Alaich and Co", from the moment of foundation to the present day, I was able to successfully delegate almost everything, but I consciously reserve two things: processing incoming applications and searching for employees. The second is a very difficult process that has to be optimized from year to year, and sometimes the approach has to be completely changed.
We have learned how to successfully and effectively weed out candidates at the start, so as not to communicate with those who only think and do not really want to study and become a good SEO specialist. Wasting time with such people is not just a pity, but unforgivable and unprofitable for a business. Therefore, at the end of last year, I came up with a non-standard test task for everyone who wants to get training at our company.
But regardless of whether a person plans to get a job in some company, or maybe he has already got there or even wants to learn SEO in order to quietly live in a village on the coast, lead several clients on freelance and enjoy life, you need instructions, a specific training plan and further development specialist.
I started by wanting to explain who I wrote this post for. Primarily for all our interns who come to work for the company. Now we are in the process of developing and standardizing an internal instruction for teaching beginners, and I want to supplement it with this post (or supplement the post with instructions?). Secondly, I will discard this post to all candidates who responded to us, completed the test, but have not yet become an intern, and in order not to waste time, I hope these guys will self-study (if they really want to become specialists and work for US). Thirdly, of course, this post is for you, dear readers, and in general for everyone who finds my instructions, and I will be glad if someone uses it to teach their trainees and beginners.
Finally, we have decided for what and for whom this instruction is, which means it's time to get down to the point and start explaining what the requirements are and where to start our journey into the world of SEO.
Do I really want to become an SEO Pro? Is SEO right for me?
From the observations of my colleagues, novices and trainees, I can say that people with a technical mindset cope best with their duties. Ideally - physicists and mathematicians (I myself am a physicist). But if you are a humanitarian, this is not a sentence. As Thomas Edison said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent sweat” - in other words, success in any endeavor is 99% dependent on the diligence and hard work you put into the business you are doing. Therefore, 1% in favor of a technical mindset, and 99% in favor of perseverance.
Interest and desire - if these two things were not there, the person would not budge at all (not taking into account the need and physical needs), so this is very important, but it is even more important to keep interest for a long time and feed it with new achievements in a career or in working with personal projects.
There is a lot of information ahead of you. Even too big. I see a clear relationship in the development and success of those guys who, in addition to working in the office, are engaged in self-study in the evenings, nights and on weekends. I do not call for such a killer work schedule, I do not recommend depriving yourself of rest, everyday worries and joys. But I hint that at the start, without devoting all your time to training, you will not achieve success (although it all depends on your personal ambitions. After all, for someone just finding any job and getting any salary is already a success).
Do you know where to start? Oddly enough, first you need to learn how to use search engines and find what you are looking for. Believe me, the query "how to use Yandex" does not sound stupid at all. This will help you find very useful help about the search results. And how can you learn to optimize sites for people and for search algorithms, if you have no idea what the search engine shows, from what and by what principles the search results are formed.
After studying for 5 years at the physics department, I did not learn much physics, but I learned enough life lessons. And one of them is the following: a stupid person is not the one who asks if he does not understand, but the one who does not ask questions when he does not understand. At the university I was stupid - I didn't ask because I was embarrassed that I would ask some nonsense, I was afraid to seem stupid if my question was too primitive, if I ask what everyone knows ... Only years later I realized how much it was weak position. Always ask if you have a question and have the opportunity to ask!(Again statistics: trainees who ask questions learn much faster and solve problems much faster.)
In addition, SEO is a dynamic field and something is constantly changing in it. One needs to maintain and update one's knowledge, but I am already getting ahead of myself, because in order to actualize something, one must first learn this “something”. So here are four things every SEO should do:
- get a general understanding of CSS and HTML;
- understand the algorithms of the search engines;
- master the basics of website optimization and promotion;
- get acquainted with analytics tools.
And the last thing I want to say at the beginning. I already wrote that I am personally looking for specialists and interns to join our company, and among the candidates I have often heard something like, they say, it / marketing / seo is a very promising industry, there is a future behind it, a lot of money and all that ... I am not against the desire to earn a lot, on the contrary, I support such aspirations, but this should not be a goal, but motivation on the way to achieving a certain goal. And if the question is only about money, then it is better to look at the specialties of a plumber or a welder, I'm not kidding, the salaries there are higher than those of SEOs. This is just my personal wish that you consciously go into this field of activity not only for money, but for other values and bring some values with you.
What an SEO Specialist Should Know
Basics of basics and basic terms that SEO should know:
